Review from BookCrossing: I read this on the plane on a business trip to New Jersey, and now it's back on DMA7's desk, waiting to be sent to the BCer who was interested in it :) (long story, but it boils down to this -- I only take books on trips that I can release or give to someone on the other end. I don't want to take them back home with me once I've read them. So I brought an envelope and stamps with me, knowing I'd finish that book this trip, and then never got close to packing tape or a m...more
"Women of a certain age" will definitely identify with the woes of the females in this book. I bought it because I loved Beachcombers, Thayer's most recent work. This book's plot intrigued me. It takes place in Boston, a city I'm familar with and is about a diverse group of women struggling to accept aging and the career and relationship changes that often accompany the process. I appreciate the proactive way the characters deal with their woes and the general air of positivity throughout.

Having just finished reading a Michael Chabon novel, I initially, found the characters and plot of The Hot Flash Club to be 'trite'. Women forming such friendship bonds so quickly? I don't think so. A university professor leaving her research to act as a secretary to spy for the friend she met the day before? Most unliklely.
I was doubtful that I could finish it. I persevered (I can not start to read a book and not finish it!) and by the end I didn't loath it. But I won't be buying the sequels....more

I really wanted to like this book. I love reading chic lit but usually the characters in most chic lit aren't much above 30. So when I found this and the youngest character was the same age as myself (52), I thought this was gonna be great. Well it was pretty stereotypical --much of the book focused on health issues and aging and how the women were dealing with it. That comes up once in a while with me and my friends but in this book it was aaall the time. I couldn't identify with it at all. It...more
Sometimes all I ask of a book is that it entertain me for a few hours. I do not always need fine writing or realistic developments. Improbable is sometimes okay!
That being said, I really enjoyed spending a couple of days with these ladies "of a certain age". They were fun and interesting and had (mostly) real problems and issues - even if the author did allow them to solve their problems too conveniently! I am always glad to read about women who develop and treasure friendships as much as I do....more

This was such a tearjerker and an emotional experience. Such a touching story of love and family. sniffle, sniffle....
From back cover:
"When Mikaela Campbell, beloved wife and the mother of two, falls into a coma, it is up to her husband, Liam, to hold the family together, to care for their grieving, frightened children. Day after day, he sits by her bedside, telling stories of the precious life they have built, hoping, always hoping, that she will wake up. Then he discovers evidence of her secre...more

Professional women over 50 meet each other and form a "club" to help each other get through this phase of their life. Very entertaining. Want to read the next few in the series. Women are Alice, Shirley, Faye and Marilyn. Alice is an HR exec. who loses her job at a corporation. Shirley is a masseuse, wanting to have her own wellness spa. Faye has recently lost her husband and looking for what she does next. Marilyn is a research scientist who finds her husband is cheating on her. Lots of physica...more
I was looking for a break from serious reading hence the choice of reading this book that seems to be suitable for the years ahead of me. Purely chick lit with some craziness thrown in just to make it mindlessly entertaining - of course the last page leaves you hanging so thank goodness I have the next book on my Kobo so off I go onto book 2 of the series . Just have to be curious as to what happens to Faye,Alice , Marilyn and Shirley - you know that an avid reader looking for easy brain not req...more
My Readers Roundtable review of this book:
In many respects, The Hot Flash Club by Nancy Thayer is chick-lit for the over-forty crowd. It’s also more—a literary melange of sassy, edgy, somber, enlightening, adventurous, funny, sad, and hopeful womanhood.
It is indisputably a woman’s book, although men could profit from reading it (many mysteries of the opposite sex will be explained!). It should appeal most intensely to older women, who will find all or part of themselves in the four characters; a...more

The Hot Flash Club
Well this is not only chick lit, but it's old-chick lit. Not my favorite genre. This was a silly, fluffy book. I read junk (a lot of it as a matter of fact, because I use it for stress relief), but my version of junk are mysteries. This was actually a book on tape and my choices at the library were limited, so I ended up with this. The story is 4 'older' women (55-62) who meet and become friends and come up with semi-insane methods to help solve each one's major problem. One is...more

Recommends it for:
those seeking the lightest read possible
While I usually prefer more serious fiction, every now and then I like to relax with some fun chick lit. Some of it is excellent, incisive, insightful, and even well written in some cases.
This is none of those things. It's just fluffy nonsense and as easily forgotten as an ice cream. I was half way through before I realised I had even read it before. I can't remember what I thought of it first time round, but this time I found it poorly written, poorly constructed, with poor characterisation, fu...more

My mom loaned me her original novel as I was departing on a business trip - I was eager to find an easy "fluffy" read. Albeit a few decades beyond my empathy, I have loved these books! I can't help myself - the formula is gold! It's the same tale of 4 - 5 women from different background with seemingly unrelatable stories coming together and providing each other with the friendship and comradery that they never knew they needed, but allows them to thrive. I love it. I'm a sap.
this was a good book aimed at women over 50. It was interesting reading how female friendships formed and the inner workings. I was a bit disappointed as all of the women either were widowed or divorced. One of the women had her marriage end during the book. What about those of us who are able to keep our marriages intact..it would be interesting to find a book about women and how we age and keep both a marriage and female friendships
This book is lots of fun -- a beach read, and faintly reminiscent of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. You close the book with a smile on your face, because for the length of time you're immersed in the book, the world is a better place and you feel secure in this wonderful support group. I've been trying to create a support group like this for the past 10 years or so. It's not nearly as easy in real life!
If you liked the First Wive's Club, than you probably will like this book. Based on a very similar premise, this novel is the story of women with different backgrounds and personalities that find unlikely friendships and help each other through difficult moments in their lives - with a bit of scheming and chocolate cake. It is cute and silly.
This is a cute chick summer read about four women ranging in age from 52-65 who met at a party and quickly shared their experiences of "getting older". This book takes you through a few months of their lives where they share about family, their love life (or lack of) and their husbands (or lack of). It is a cute, funny, and quick read.
This was an easy fun read. I enjoyed it, but I don't think younger women would enjoy it that much. Thankfully, I have not been through the challenges these women have been through, but they are easy to relate to. I really liked the relationship they formed with each so quickly. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series.

4 women, about my age and older become very good friends.
They are an interesting blend of personalities who amazingly get along beautifully. They decide to interfere into each others and a few other people's lives causing some chaos and some beautiful events.
Sounds like a fun series to show that us older gals still have what it takes to enjoy life!

The Hot Flash Club is a quick fun read! The four ladies are all older going through individual experiences with menopause, hot flashes, arthritis and other age milestones. As they navigate through their own lives they find each other and ultimately an outlet of understanding.
With chocolate, food, and girl talk, The Hot Flash Club helps to women laugh at the "midlife" crises.
Recommend this to any woman who is over the age of 40.

A fluffy, fun and totally impossibly plotted book....but I enjoyed it thoroughly for what it was: complete escapism. Four very different post-menopausal women meet and become friends. Fast-paced and a great vacation or airplane read. There are several sequels, and I've just ordered one for my Kindle.
