Osprey's book on Byzantine infantry covers from around the reign of Emperor Leo VI, which saw a revival of interest in military matters, to the fall of Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade, which interrupted tradition, and very effectively brought the era to a close.

As a Warrior series book, the emphasis is on the individual men, and how they were organized, equipped and trained. I found the text of the book to be excellent, and very informative on a number of subjects. I'm not fully sure of som
Dawson approaches the subject with a variety of relevant source materials, including art, textual evidence, archaeological remains and his own experience in re-enactment. The book is fairly well-rounded, discussing topics such as equipment, encampment and training.

The books does have a few flaws. While Dawson may be an expert on 10th-13th century weapons and armour, this book strongly suggests that he is much less knowledgable about 10th-13th century textual history. The various military manuals

A really nice, compact and fact-packed read this. Much like the other books in the Osprey series the text is interspersed with illustrations, diagrams and photographs of archaeological artefacts.

I demolished it in a couple of hours and the only reason I didn't give it five stars was because I felt the book could have been far longer; a lot more detail that I was interested in that was only briefly touched on.

A fine starting point for research though.
