Tônio Kroeger é uma história muito fácil de se identificar, angustiosos amores platonicos, admirações nunca superadas e clássico sofrimento da classe média em que a grama do vizinho é sempre mais verde. Dramas bem atuais.

Duas narrativas em um livro. Morte em Veneza é um tratado impressionante sobre o poder da beleza. É angustiante a forma como o protagonista Gustav von Aschenbach se deixa escravizar por uma sedução platônica e completamente absurda. Ao longo da narrativa, nos vemos enredados junto com ele.
Tonio Kroger parece autobiográfico. Lembra a história do próprio Thomas Mann, que é filho de uma brasileira e certamente vivenciou essa sensação de não pertencimento na sua infância e juventude na Alemanha.
