This has been a very easy read for me, such that I finished the book during a ferry trip from Manhattan to Staten Island where I live. It complements nicely whatever stock knowledge I have and hard-earned lessons gained from experiences on effective marketing, this rarefied area where some make really good money because they're able to write and connect effectively well with users and buyers anywhere in the world. Some slick guys continue to convince you you ought to check out for yourself what More...

Just another book I read during one of those sunday sessions at my brother's house. Honestly, I didn't enjoy it more than I did with Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite. The main idea of the book is the same, which is to do things the unconventional way and how it would lead you to achieving something greater than you thought you could.

Frankly, I am sick of these 'advices'. Don't be afraid to make mistakes (yes, acceptable), mistakes is okay (OK, but not so much), NOT GETTING GOOD More...

We ran across this book at our local used bookstore. The book is small and unassuming, but is really full of great tips, not only if you work in advertising, as Mr. Arden did, but also for the average Joe. Full of quotes like, “Without having a goal it’s difficult to score” the book quickly floats along. Only later do you remember something Mr. Arden said, like his remark that while momentarily upsetting, getting fired all five times actually moved his career along, and incorporate his view poin More...

It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be is a handbook of how to succeed in the world, a pocket ‘bible’ so to speak for the talented and timid to help make the unthinkable and the impossible, possible. Advertising guru Paul Arden offers up his wisdom on issues as diverse as problem solving, responding to a brief, communicating, playing your cards right, making mistakes and creativity, all endeavours that can be applied to aspects of modern life.

This is going to be a sh More...

This was a great little read. Since the book weighs in at a deceptive 121 pages (big print, short pithy sentences, and loads of pictures/illustrations to help communicate the point), I was able to polish this one of in just under over an hour.

Paul Arden is one of the advertising industries "mad scientists"... the kind of guy that comes up with ideas that are so far removed from convention that he might look like a fool as he presents them, but it takes a second for the gen More...

This short, thin book was worth every penny of the $3.99 I spent on it and every minute of the the 60 minutes I invested in reading it. I like the kind of author / advertising guy who wastes no more space in telling you what he knows that he needs to.

This book is part self-help book and part handbook for success in the advertising field.

Starting with the self-help message of the book: the gist of it is that the biggest determinants of your success are your ambition and More...

This is a short little book about marketing and advertising. It makes a couple of interesting points about marketing yourself, but it was definitely written for a group of people with personalities, skills, and talents very different from me. :)

I like the ideas to:
* strive for excellence
* have a vision for yourself
* share your ideas freely
* don't look for the next opportunity, but realize the one in hand is the opportunity
* accentuate the positive

My graphic design teacher told me to read this when I was feeling stuck. I just finished and I loved every word. It was an eye-opener of the things I'm doing right and the things I'm not doing at all... I love that the author encourages being strong, risky, and free-willed. I think that if you are in an advertising/ design/ creative business at all this book is a MUST! But even for anyone looking for words of wisdom and pointers this is a great book to pick up and read in an hour. Its short and More...

Nah...buku ketiganya yang berjudul God Explained in A Taxi Ride sangat jelek menurutku. Paul mencoba berbicara sebagai pengamat semua sudut pandang agama-agama dunia, yang jatuh-jatuhnya, tema utama buku ketiganya (ber-Tuhan)membuat pembaca condong berprasangka More...

More...

Strange book. Being informed that I would have to wait more then an hour to see my doctor I walked to the next bookstore. The bookstore was one of the type where you can look for twenty minutes without finding anything you really want to read. Heading out to leave, I saw this book laying at the cash desk. The desig first annoyed me. Then I read that it says it's the most successful book of the world. I counldn't belive a book like this would find a publisher. It couldn't have been less interesti More...

Paul Arden is a champ, he was an executive at a very large advertising agency, and he killed it there. Plain and simple, when you think of people who have "accomplished their dreams to the fullest extent" like Lance Armstrong, this guy is one of those people. Now he hangs out, travels a lot because the guy has done it, and doesn't need anymore money. So what does he do, he write a book for inspiration that talks about how to accomplish goals. Remember this guy was in advertising so More...

Great little book.
If you’re thinking that you will get something new, totally revolutionary, and out of the box, you will be very disappointed. The advise and ideas in the book are very widely known, things you already do, and in most cases, the author keeps repeating himself.
However, its really sweet, easy read, and provides a great positive reenforcement to you, and assures you that you will get your desired success.
I recomend this book to anyone from fresh grads to seasoned exe

Wow this book is very hard to take, based on very experience of an old professional advertiser. It's about how life shouldn't be easy if you want to get higher achievement. It's about how we need to push ourselves to be better and better. A very ambitious book.

I like the format of book, since it's written by an advertiser, the design is very eye catching. Simple but memorable words, pages, pictures; are mixed together to make this one beautiful book. Very fast when read it.

it's and odd book. it doesn't tell you anything you don't already know or think to yourself, but there's some comfort in a guy like Arden telling you it's ok to try it out and go for it.

I'd recommend getting it from your local library though... I'm not sure how many times I'm going to reread it. It's a little dose of courage with some OK ideas, like a mother telling you you're special. Only this guy actually knows what he's talking about.

Quick, pretty read written by an ad guy. I bought this at Anthropologie so you can imagine...

Includes nice reminders such as:

"If, instead of seeking approval, you ask, 'What's wrong with it? How can I make it better?', you are more likely to get a truthful, critical answer.

You may even get an improvement on your idea."

I may have liked it more than the average bear given that I'm in marketing.

A useless, self-destructing, pointless book that talks about how good a person can be if he had the real intention to be what he seeks. Yet all these axioms were repeated excessively in the history of mankind, until they have lost their originality. And I still do not find why and how this book succeeded, maybe its special design that keeps on attracting people or the lack of words in this book.

"It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be" by Paul Arden is a short book full of good ideas. Not only is the book well designed, it also boils down big ideas and makes the palatable to consume. I refer back to it constantly, both for its wisdom and to remind myself that I have the power to succeed and make the impossible possible for myself.

Unless you have experience doing design work, this book probably comes off as a bunch of feel-good quotes. It's more of a series of reminders not to forget what you learned in design studio, because for non-designers, they're not going to have the experience to see the deeper meaning behind the words, and when one aphorism is applicable and when it isn't.

This was a good little book with some big ideas. Even though I am not in the business world, I still got something out of it. The biggest thing for me is actually going out now and applying that knowledge. The author was clear and concise with his thoughts. He didn't beat around the bush with anything, but still managed to tell a story. I think I will refer back to this book often. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

The book confirms something that i already believe which is "it s not who you are but who you want to be that matters, it was quite predictable....i also understand the importance of treating people for what they can be in the future and their potential, not at their current situation or who they are now...i recommend this book.

It's kind of an inspirational pamphlet based on the author's advertising experience. So, it's the book as a 30 second TV spot. Like a TV commercial, it can be fun and even give that momentary feeling of inspiration, but when it's over, it's over. All I really retained was the image of Victoria Beckham's lower back tattoo.

I picked this up on my trip to the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum in NYC. While it's a concise but clever book about business practices, I found it to be an immensely inspiring treatise in regards to writing and creating stories (and ultimately believing enough in yourself to get them made).

Highly recommended.

This book is excellent. It's just what I needed to red. I shall have to buy a copy nd keep it with me at all times. It talks about advertising, but it is so relevant to work and attaining anything you may want (i.e goals and aspirations). It gave me a mental kick in the ass.

I felt like Paul was telling me a story in the first pages (and that made me want to read the book and that's great, really), but ended up bored, for it practically repeats the same things... and when I finished the book, I just could say, "okay" and that's it, it's okay.
