Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel (Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel #1)
In 2001, audiences first met and fell in love with a twelve-year-old criminal mastermind named Artemis Fowl. Since then, the series has sold over seven million copies in the United States alone. Now, this phenomenally successful series is being translated into a graphic novel format. Eoin Colfer has teamed up with established comic writer Andrew Donkin to adapt the text. F...more

A graphic novel version of the first book in the Artemis Fowl series.
I was highly disgusted with the illustrations in the book. Butler's neck was drawn out of proportion and was a revolting mass of flesh that only made me feel ill. Further more, the rest of the illustrations, the ones that I had crafted in my head when I had first read the book were NOTHING like the ones in this book. Everybody was crudely drawn and uglier then I could have imagined. Among the opening chapters was a page that I...more

Overall I really liked this book. I understood that the characters features would be exagerated (as they are in many GNs) and so I was only slightly disappointed in the artists depictions. My biggest complaint about the characters was the portrayal of Butler. I alwasy saw him as a huge guy but with slightly more finesse and style. I was also a little shocked by the sexyness of Holly. Our very first view of her is in a tank-top that is falling off and boyshorts and our second is of her in the sho...more
Who knew Butler is blond, Artemis is near anorexic skinny and Julius is, well, gray. I loved the visuals that a graphic novel can give a book to make it come alive.
While the graphics are amazing, the story hasn't changed, in fact, it looses a lot of its depth because it is so short. The two best things about the Artemis Fowl books are the sharp dialogue and rounded characters, and both of these qualities are lost in the graphic novel.

I finished but did not much like the original book of Artemis Fowl, but as a graphic novel, it is waaaayyyy cool. When I first saw that they turned it into a GN I thought it would be a great hook to get kids into the whole series. NOW, I'm hoping they just go ahead and GN all the books in the series. Excellent art can do amazing things to a story. When a teacher friend walked into the room where I was reading this today, I didn't even look up. "Wow," she said, "You're really in the ZONE."
I would like to say that the beautiful illustrations on the cover of "Artemis Fowl" by Giovanni Rigano and Paolo Lamanna are what drew me to read it, but alas, it was only the partial reasoning. I couldn't help but be drawn to the title. The title gives you this sense of sinister sophistication that leaves you wondering who or what is Artemis Fowl. The foreboding feeling of the title does not disappoint either. This graphic novel is based on the first book in the Artemis Fowl series and drops ri...more
Its a decent adaption of the original - the character design is pleasant (though not what i imagined the characters would look like - especially Foaly, Butler, and Mulch - but that is entirely personal preference) and it is easy to distinguish between each character at all times.
I wont speak much on the plot, which is excellent, since this is an adaption of a best-selling novel. In the majority of cases, readers will have read the novel and this will be a companion to it.

I surprisingly liked this book, I read the original Artemis Fowl when it first came out and absolutely fell in love with Artemis and his attitude. The book is hilarious and that much better because it has pictures to go along with it, I wish that there was a way to have more insight into the characters like in the original book, but considering all the pictures it was perfect. The characters were drawn exactly how they are described. What makes this book even better is that the original author,...more

Just like the graphic version of The Arctic Incident, this novel's well executed as a whole, only has some minor flaws.
I still don't much like the jumping from one first-person storyteller to the next, at least not in the same panel, that's very confusing, and a less than straightforward way of doing things. It would have been much better had it followed the original novel's third person form.

I wasn't out looking to buy this book specifically when I entered the book store. I was just casually browsing around when I found this among the 'On Sale' items. I had no idea who Eion Colfer was and even less about Artemis Fowl but the couple of pages I read made me chuckle. So, seeing as it was marked down and that it would be my first actual graphic novel purchase, I bought it.

GRAPHIC NOVEL REQUIREMENT- Ok, so I loved this graphic novel. I'd read the original Artemis Fowl series, and so for my graphic novel requirement I thought it would be interesting to read this version to compare. It's a little bit upsetting to see some characters depicted so differently than I had pictured them, but I think the plot of the story fits perfectly with this genre. Artemis Fowl, twelve-year-old evil genius, has discovered the book of Faerie and decides to kidap a member of the faerie...more

First off let me say I am no graphic officinado, but for me personally & my three boys, we loved it, it's detailed expressive both in drawing style & colour usage, I mean the colours dictate the mood & action that is happening at the time. I would of like to see the text a little larger that is my only gripe in the explaination boxes, but in the verbal speech balloons the font size is just right.
This version is the imported American edition, the only difference is the front cover,...more
It has been so long since I read the novel that I barely remembered the story before I started to read this. I wasn't impressed with the first Artemis Fowl novel but reading it in graphic novel format seems to have done it a bit of good as I did quite enjoy this version, though I still find the story rather on the mundane side. The end of each chapter finishes with a dossier on a character, event or place which adds a lot of background information in a unique way; I found these entertaining and...more
In Artemis Fowl: The Graphic Novel, readers meet and are captivated by twelve year old genius named Artemis Fowl. In the story, Artemis kidnaps Captain Holly Short, a fairy from the LEPrecon Unit. Fowl’s plan is to use Captain Short in order to collect one ton of fairy gold. Fowl is protected by his bodyguard, Butler, and has acquired a fairy book which helps him to plan his attack. Captain Short’s superior, Julius Root, must negotiate with Fowl in order to retrieve his captain and to ensure tha...more
I love the Artemis Fowl book series, but in my opinion the heavily-stylized artwork of the graphic novel really detracts from the story -- to the point where I'm too busy shielding my eyes from the lumpy, mutated character designs to actually read any of the text.
I generally enjoy graphic novels (as anyone who has seen my manga and comic book collection can attest), but I find the presentation of this specimen fairly uninteresting. For example, looking at the front cover: Does this picture make...more

While I have read adult graphic novels like Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, I am not that familiar with graphic novels for kids. With the rise in popularity and publication of these books, I decided I should get up to speed with my students!
I decided to start with graphic novelizations of YA/children's books I have already read so that I could compare the original book to the graphic novel version.

In 2001, the Artemis Fowl novel was published. As a result of the novels popularity, Artemis Fowl has been transformed into a graphic novel format. Through this graphic novel, readers will be able to see and experience the underground fairy world, examine Foaly’s inventions, and follow their favorite character as this graphic novel is action packed and is designed with full-color panels.

I'm kind of unable to judge this book on graphic novel alone because I remember (and like) the book so much, and they really are quite close (Colfer helped adapt it for the graphic novel form).
When flipping through this book fast, I wasn't that impressed. I thought it looked too text heavy, images weren't overly catching, and panel formations were a bit boring. However, in actually reading it, I didn't feel it was at all text heavy and I moved through it very happily and quickly.

This book is about a 13 year genius named Artemis Fowl.In the Begganing of the book Artemis is trying to look for a fairy rule book. The book Artemis Fowl is about all of Artemis's adventures. main adventure in the book is that artemis is trying to get a sacred fairy book from the magic world, and if he does get the book he can have all of the power in the world. While reading this book i made a text to self connection. Artemis is trying hard to find the book because he wants power. When i want something really badly i will do anything to find it just like Artemis. I would give this book four stars because I always like artem...more
I read the book Artemis Fowl: The graphic novel by Eoin Colfer. My book is about a boy named Artemis Fowl who is around the age of twelve and is one of the greatest criminal masterminds of the century. He is in search of fairy gold but he might need to hold a fairy hostage to do so. My favorite part of the book is when Artemis gives up half of the gold so he can save his mom because it shows that family is worth more than a million dollars. I think that Mr. Colfer wrote this book to tell a good...more
Reading a graphic novel that is based on a non-graphic novel is a bit like seeing a movie based on a book you've read, I've decided. I judge whether the characters look like I expected them to (mostly yes, they are very good renditions), how closely or far the story deviates from the original (it is so minor I could not discern any noticeable gaps) and how satisfying the overall experience is compared to the original (as good...in a different way).

I've listened to, or read, all the Artemis Fowl books. So picking up the graphic version just made sense. It's a great way to take in the first Fowl story. Solid depictions of the characters make it fun to look at and read. Plus it's a super fast read. I like to read slowly, especially when I've got pictures to look at, and I was finished with this thing in an hour or so.
I actually read this before the original, and in all, I quite enjoyed it. I'm used to graphic novels, so the exaggerated features didn't bother me, but I think I would love to read the original soon and get my own visuals on the situations.
I chose to read it because I had always been told how great of a book Artemis Fowl was by all my friends and teachers. (I've only read the first chapter of the original) I think the graphic novel is best suited as a support to the text version, but it was co...more

Disclaimer: My experience with comic books and graphic novels is barely worth mentioning, so take this review as coming from AF fan and not as an opinion of comic book expert. Just so we are clear.
I quite enjoyed it, actually. Especially the designs for Artemis, Butler, Juliet and Holly. Mulch and Foaly were nothing like I imagined, but they were consistent with the rest of the book, I guess.

I really enjoyed the illustrations in this graphic novel that was produced from the original book. I liked the exaggerations of the character features because it really helped distinguish the characters. I really liked the colors that were used, especially for the night scenes. The illustrations are filled with action, which is something that I really liked. It was as if I could just look at the pictures and understand what was happening in the story. A drawback for me is that I don't really lik...more
I was pleased with this graphic novel. Although I was wary of putting concrete visuals to the characters that I have imagined/pictured in my head, I quickly overcame that and realized that the way I saw them was almost exactly as illustrated. Fancy that! The only character who I saw differently was Butler. I shall continue to picture him in my own way rather than the graphic novel version.

The problem with movies/graphic novels/manga/fan art is that everyone sees the characters in their head differently, so it's impossible to please everyone. But when the author themself approves of the manga...it's hard to argue. I skimmed through this mostly for the pictures, because I've read the book. I can't imagine reading this without reading the book, because the book is more eloquent and not crammed. It was also odd that Holly spoke in first person; not terrible, just odd.

This was a nice visual experience after having read the other books in the series. It was interesting to see the interpretations of the characters, though some were not even close to what I pictured. Who would have thought Mulch Diggums could be cute? I'd recommend reading the original first, as this one is somewhat abridged.
This is a 5 star rating from someone who has never read the actual book (but now wants to). Not sure how it holds up in comparison, but I thought this was extremely well done and entertaining. Can't keep it on the shelves in the Children's Room where I work either, which is the highest praise, I suppose.
