Are blind dates supposed to be this bloody?

A Secret McQueen Story

Of course, it’ll mean pulling off the impossible—find and kill a displaced rogue vampire without disrupting the first promising date she’s had in ages. As my enthusiasm was quite exuberant, you must know how much I luurved Sierra Dean’s debut novel, the first book in the Secret McQueen series: Something Secret This Way Comes (but if you somehow managed to miss it, you can find my fan girl-like gushing review here).

So after loving Something Secret This Way Comes to pieces I have to say it wasn’t easy for Sierra Dean to floor me as my expectations were skyscraper high, but she not only met but even surpassed them!

Secret McQueen is unique. Well, or an abomination, depending on who you ask. She's the only half-werewolf, half-vampire hybrid known and neither side would be happy to know that she's a mix of the other so she keeps that little bit of information private. Right now she's playing all fangy and working for the Vampire Council bringing in rogues or ashing them depending on her orders.

Between that whole no sunlight thing and her job for the council, Secret’s dating life has dwindled to nothing. Her...more

REVIEW:
The prequel to Something Scecret This Way Comes, The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters follows Secret McQueen on one of her job for the council of Vampire council during a date.

I loved this novella because it helped me better understand what Secret has do go through on a daily bases when she’s working. While trying to go on a date with a guy her friend set her up with Se...more

So technically speaking this novella is number two in the Secret McQueen series when searching by publication date. However, I have dubbed this novella 0.5. *loud applause and cheers* I know, I know. The brilliance is awesomesauce! *takes a bow* The reason for such brilliance is that The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters is more of a prequel to book 1, Something Secret This Way Comes.

I really enjoyed reading The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters. I actually read it before Something Secret This Way Comes, but I don’t think it matters which way you go. Sierra does an excellent job introducing us to Secret and giving us a bit of her background without it feeling like she is giving us a huge back story. And that is important in a novella because you don’t want to be spending half the book learning about a character you may have already read anyways. Holden is in this story too and...more

The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters is a short little novella by author Sierra Dean. Her other book "Something Secret This way Comes" was reviewed on the blog a while back and you can find that review here. Let me give you the blurb.

This is set before Something Secret This Way Comes: Secret McQueen, Book 1, so Secret has yet to meet Desmond and Lucas. In this one we are introduced to her vampire council liason Holden, who is dashing and annoying all at the same time. This is a taste of the great series Sierra Dean has created with Secret McQueen as a hybrid vampire/werewolf bounty hunter, actually make that more of an assassin. It has everything a supernatural story needs, great solid character and plot with a shot of humou...more

Ok. Read this before the 1st book. :)

I like that it's not just a novella that you can ignore. A short story with a start and end. :p

Secret (that's her name) goes out on a date. :) sounds silly but hut read it ok.

Usually there is no reason why I would mention spoilers in novellas. But there is something that I wish to mention (view spoiler)[ Oh man!!! The cop sounded hot... I wonder if he is forever out of the picture. He isn't mentioned at all in book 1. At some pointy in Book 1, I thought he is...more

Favorite Quote: “Girls who think boobs are their most distracting assets haven’t been watched by a vampire.”

Secret’s best friend, Mercedes, has the perfect man for her. Secret’s life doesn’t lend itself to many possible romantic interests so she decides to accept the latest blind date offering. What a freakin' surprise this little story was! The premise to this story seemed pretty no-nonsense, nice and straightforward. While that's exactly what it ended up being, I was charmed by the characters and quirky style of the protagonist, Secret McQueen.

The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters didn't have a whole lot in the way of exposition and world building, but I think that's the whole point. I hear that it was written (and certainly published) after the first full-length book in the series was...more

This morning, I decided to get stuck into this book on my Kindle. It happens to be the prequel novella for the very awesome Secret McQueen series.

Secret's friend has set her up on a blind date, and she's quite surprised when she finds herself really warming towards the detective, Tyler. However, because her life is never easy, her vampire liaison, Holden, has also handed her a new job. So, she soon finds herself juggling her date with trying to kill a rogue vampire--who also happens to be a Hol...more

I was really excited when I received this one for review. I haven't come across a werewolf-vampire hybrid heroine since Keri Arthur's Riley Jenson Guardian series. The Secret Guide to Dating Monsters is a short prequel to Something Secret This Way Comes. I haven't read the full length novel yet but after reading this one I have every intention on getting to it sooner rather than later. I really enjoyed this novella. It's action-packed, with great characters and Sierra Dea...more

How I got this book: eARC from author

This is a short but very action packed novella featuring Secret kicking ass and taking names. Secret’s best friend has set her up on a blind date, and the last thing she wants to do is suffer through it. When Holden shows up with an assignment, it might provide Secret with the perfect change to ditch her date and go out doing what she loves.

But once...more

From the first chapter of this book I knew I was going to be hooked on the series. Spoiler alert: I was right. I didn't just read the books, I devoured them. Secret is a perfect balance of bad-ass heroine with enough emotion behind her to be relate-able. Despite the high fantasy level (vampire/werewolves oh my) it feels like you are reading your bff's blog and you want to go hang out with them. I highly suggest the entire series.

Seems promising, Secret is not a Mary-Sue and, even though she's a vampire/werewolf hybrid, doesn't have any out-of-this-world powers to make her special. Also, so far she's not one of those UF heroines who are always cracking stupid jokes and acting like they can't be bothered with basic social skills just so they appear "tough", she's pretty likeable and believable.

Let's hope it holds throughout the series.

Guys, there's a kiss in this story that will knock your socks off. It's smoking. I think Secret walked away from it a little addled. It was just... whoa. Honestly, the story could have stopped at that kiss and I would have been happy. Yes, it was that good. Thank you, Sierra Dean. Thank you.

The good news is that the kiss isn't the be all and end all of this story. It was just the cherry on top. So to speak. I mean, Secret gets to kick some ass. And kiss a guy. And kick some more ass. And go on a...more

I enjoyed this book; during a terribly long wait at the Doctor's yesterday I read this whole novella and was surprised to find an hour had zipped by - that's always the sign of a good story!

I'll be buying the next Secret McQueen book to see where she and her dating go from here.

Holy Crap I looooooooooove this series with a great gushing stalkerish fury. Normally I'm not much for reading shorts but OMG I couldn't put this down. I can't wait for September when I can get my hot little hands on A Bloody Good Secret.

I liked the book and would have marked it higher but it's very short. Plus price vs length made me wonder if it was worth it... Don't get me wrong the book is good containing everything we love about Secret.

As you all are aware of now I do not like writing reviews for novellas. What to say? Not to mention that most make me want more, and not in a good way. Here I did want more too cos I love the books, and 47 pages is way too little Secret.

Anyway, blind date, off to kill a Hollywood star, Holden being Holden and some ass kicking :)

I am glad though that I read this one now first, cos prequel are almost never as good as the real thing

Very cool intro to a series, now I just have to get my hands on the rest of them. Can't wait! Excitement, blood and guts, cool heroine.... just simple fun reading.
Anna (Bobs Her Hair)
This urban fantasy novella was a quick read. Secret McQueen is half vampire and werewolf. Don't really know much about her other than she is an otherworldly bounty hunter. The novella was action-packed and I'm going to give the series a try.

Grade: C+

I loved all the diffent parnamoral creatures. Wish there was more than chapters. Great interduction to Secret's world. I want more!!!!

I'm off to read book 1 (this was the prequel) & hopefully it has a bit more plot in it, although I enjoyed the ass-kicking in this one.

Such a fun, cute addition to the series! It was great to read this after reading books 1 & 2 to find out all the missing pieces :-)
Tracey
A quick read story, it has a little romance and some vampire fighting to make up this prelude to the Secret McQueen series.
Ellie
Great background story. I really liked reading it after book 1 as a flash back. It makes the actions between Secret and Holden more humorous!

Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. She was born and raised in the Canadian prairies and is allowed annual exit visas in order to continue her quest of steadily conquering the world one city at a time. Making the best of the cold Canadian winters, Sierra indulges in her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy.

Ever since she was a young girl she has loved the idea of...more
