I mean, Who the HELL decided to pair the zillionaire wealthy and half-mad evil vampire Lothaire -- complete with a wicked dry sense of humor and a snobby God-like complex -- with a dirt-poor, barefooted, Appalachian hillbilly girl who is possessed by an evil Goddess, lives in a broken down trailer with her redneck family, and enjoys ‘parking’ for some good ol’ dry humping action?!

There are only a few select authors I consider to be like crack with their series. JR Ward is my #1 crack. Kresley Cole comes in a very close second. Kresley’s Immortals after Dark series is very addicting and she writes characters who walk a very fine line in regards to morals. Her heroes and heroine are fierce warriors who will fight to the death to survive or get what they feel they. This book was entertaining (hey: it's Cole!) but compared to her earlier work it was just okay. It had some definite 5 star moments (Lothaire's sarcasm for one) but overall the general plot line wasn't great and it just went on and on. I also stick to my guns: Lothaire should have been with Nix.

What did I think? What did I think?...
I think this book is fantastic! Hands down the most erotic of the whole fabulous series, and one of the hardest to put down. I stayed up until 3:00am to finish this one...and then I was so keyed up I couldn't fall asleep! And it's days later and I'm still thinking about it...and rereading it.:)

FYI, pretty much spoiler-free, I think.

3+/3.5 stars overall. I'll be completely honest; I'm a little underwhelmed. I liked it...for the most part. I just COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN! It has been ages since I was THIS fixated with a book. I can't even remember the last time I added a book to my favs list. I always adored this series and I definitely can say it is one of the best in the paranormal-romance genre. But more than that, I'm glad to say this book is just as good as the others if not better.

Lothaire was definitely one of those heroes you don't know if to love or to hate. He has always been the 'bad guy' but once we get to know him better we can understand why he is the way he is and did the things he did. I always believe people are the way they are for a reason so to get to know those reasons always makes me feel closer to the characters. I adored Lothaire, although I thought he would be a much complicated and complex hero. He is pretty easy to understand once you get to know him. The heroine was good for him, she just knew exactly which of his buttons to push.

But I know that the reason for why I adore the books in this series so much is because of the author and not the characters. While I enjoy reading about all the characters of this series, it's the way everything is so amazingly well-described and this outstanding new and perplexing world what I love the most. I know she could keep writing more books and I just would keep reading them because there is no one thing I adore about this series. There's just something too appealing about this series that doesn't let me wait long to put my hands on a new book for long.

And I just can't help adoring how I always laugh and laugh with them! Those Valks will always be some of the best characters I have EVER read about.

Maybe because from the beginning, Lothaire never be my nom nom boyfriend, nor that I lusting over him, that's why I don't have a high expectation. I just finished the book and know that whatever review I could write won't do it justice. It was spectacular! One thing that I loved, among many others that is, is that KC hasn't changed Lothaire or tried to mellow him or make him seem more... normal. He is as cray-cray as he's ever been and as ruthless, but we do see his charming side[yes, he has one:D] and the very, extremely arrogant one.

That being said I just saved some of the quotes that I thought that were not spoiler-ish :D

The beginning of this book sucks you in, it traps you, and it doesn’t let you go. By the time you finish, you realize the whole day has passed, and you haven’t fed your children or husband, or even grabbed a coffee. Just me? I didn’t think so.

General Thoughts: I love this series beyond reason. How is it that every freaking book manages to get better and better. I have no clue. I never read paranormal romance until I stumbled across this series and it was the best stumble I've ever had. People think i'm so odd when i sit around squealing over a book about immortal beings , but you have to read it to understand!

Ok I finally have time to review and what better way to express my love of this book than with an Acronym!

L othaire:

He is just so sigh worthy. Unlike some people, I never had a problem with Lothaire. Yes, he popped up at the most horrid times and was an ass. However, I knew he was going to get his. I always knew that the one thing he couldn't defy was his immortal nature. When his bride came-a-callin' I figured he would get his just desserts. I really loved finding out who the true Lothaire was. In the end, he is nothing but a really sad product of his environment. Everything that concerned him was tainted with some sort of betrayal, torture, or evilness. I enjoyed his intelligence immensely and his struggle. He is just one of those characters I could honestly read about for a long time. I was always interested in what he was going to do or what he had done. He is so misunderstood. There is a part in the novel when he is talking to Nix and he simply states that he "feels old." He wanted Emily back because for once he felt young and alive. I love that moment. It was poignant and it was the moment When i fully empathized with Lothaire. Reminded me of when Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby said I'm 5 years to old to lie to myself and call it honor...

O bcession

Thats right. I'm freaking obsessed. I mean, I was already obsessed by the time I read this book. However, this one multiplied it by like a million. I'm just not a person who likes to read series for some reason but this series is my exception to everything

T ragedy:
There was a hint of tragedy that surrounded everything in this novel. Lothaire's past. Emily's present circumstances...( i shall stay ambigious on that as to not spoil it :P) The state of the Lore. It added a seriousness to the novel. What I love about these novels is that every action effects something big in the Lore, whether we know what it is or not. The tragedy surrounding Lotharie and Emily cemented the importance of all their actions.

H eroine:
OMG. Emily was freaking amazing! Kresley Cole surprised the shit out of me with this girl. She was everything you just wouldn't expect in a mate for lothaire. The best part about her was that I compltely knew the type of girl she is. I'm from Indiana, home of corn and Nascar so I felt like I knew Emily personally. It is just hilarious that Mr. sophisticated vampire lotharie is matched to this girl from Appalachia! She was so strong. Her life was hell in a handbasket but she still endeavored to fight her circumstances. she always had an ace card. I liked her better than freaking Lothaire. She was too good for him to be honesty. A ction:
There was a nice amount of action in this novel. I generally knew what was going to happen in the end, however, I could never predict HOW it was going to happen. It really made this novel fun to read as well as exciting ^_^

I mprovement:
This series just keeps getting better. I know it sounds cliche but immortals after dark is very much so like wine. The world building is superb, the coupling, the actions, the plot, the suspense. Everything is so good. Each book gets better. I can hardly wait for the next one. I love seeing a writer improve with each book. It shows how much KC cares about her readers and her work.

R epartee:
The freaking banter in this novel is like no other. I love LOVE a good snide remark. The sarcasm and wit was just endless in this novel. Lothaire is such a dick! The things he said were atrocious...I laughed out loud so much. He is just my type of guy bad mouthed and sarcastic. And lovely Emily gave it right back. She didn't take any shit! I loved it. KC can write banter like no other. I could read her quotes all day!!

E roticism:
OMG OMG OMG! This book was EEEEEROTIC! I was reading this book in a class and it was damn near impossible to keep a straight face. My boyfriend kept asking me why i was blushing ( which is a feat since I have dark skin!). The sex was hot hot hot. I should know, I just got done re reading a scene for like the 100th time... hehe

Well that ends my acronoym, i don't think i will be doing that again. It took forever. LOL

Points of Concern

So this book/series did raise some things to my attention.

1. Word on the street is KC is going to be doing a YA series...Idk how i feel about that. I do know I'm not excited... Its pretty obvious who it would star (view spoiler)[Thad probably (hide spoiler)]

2. Blood and Mist Series
I'm excited, however, I'm so invested in this lorean world already. There are so many coupling I've yet to see!! I hope those don't get put on the back burner

The cover is finally revealed!!! And Lothaire is so DAMN HOT!!!!

I am so glad Nix is not his bride. They just did not sit well as a couple, for me, at least.
Hope the next one is for Nix, though, she needs to find some love!
P.S Am I the only one that thinks that Lothaire kind of resembles that Eric guy from True Blood?

Because of that, I was going to put off buying Lothaire until it came out in paperback, but after reading so many rave reviews I decided to take a chance and spring for the hardcover version. Unfortunately, I ended up not enjoying this as much as everyone else.

Lothaire has found his Bride, the woman who brings his body back to life and is his destined mate. The problem is that two souls currently inhabit his Bride’s body. One is an evil goddess who lives for blood, violence, and all around nefarious deeds. The other is Ellie, a mortal hillbilly who is content to live-out life on her family’s land. Naturally, Lothaire assumes that his Bride is the evil goddess and begins planning a way to exterminate Ellie’s soul.

After waking up covered in other people’s blood, Ellie decides that the only way to stop the goddess from murdering is to kill the body they share. The problem with this plan is that every time Ellie devises a way to kill herself, Lothaire seems to know and pops-up out of nowhere to stop her. After one close call, Lothaire decides that the safest place to keep an eye on Ellie is close by. With this in mind, Lothaire hauls Ellie off to his penthouse in New York where she'll be prisoner until he discovers a way to kill her soul.

So, this story basically ranks up there with the first book in the series for me. Meaning, I just could not stand how the relationship between Ellie and Lothaire played out. One of my biggest problems stems from the fact that I don’t usually enjoy stories where the heroine is taken captive by the hero and they fall in love. It typically ends up smacking too much of Stockholm syndrome for me. Despite that, I’ve read a couple captive heroine stories that I’ve enjoyed. This… was not one of those.

After taking Ellie prisoner, Lothaire immediately begins emotionally torturing her. He mocks, he sneers, he threatens her family, he laughs, they boink, he mocks, he has a violent episode, he sneers, and so on. While this is happening, Lothaire is still hunting for a ring to kill Ellie’s soul. Eventually, he begins to realize that Ellie might actually be his Bride, which leads to a few tiny scenes where Lothaire regrets how he’s treated her. However, these moments are over in the blink of an eye and Lothaire immediately goes back to being a douche. So, by the end of the book, I hated his ass. I was actually hoping that Ellie would run off with Thad. Yeah, Lothaire had some really awful moments in his life and at first I did feel sympathy for what he went through, but as the story progressed (and he just kept getting worse) that sympathy died. He was horrendous to Ellie and he never atoned for his actions. Yes, in the final ten pages he finally comes around, but after 300 pages of him being a total dickhead I needed a hell of a lot more from him than what we got.

The saving grace for this book was Cole’s writing style and the heroine, Ellie. As I said before, I love Cole’s use of mythology in this series. I also give her huge kudos for writing these books as if all each book is happening at the same time, or almost right on top of each other. I imagine that takes some serious effort. However, the reason why I kept reading the book was for Ellie. Yes, she annoyed me at times with the constant back and forth about her emotions, but she had serious backbone. Ellie knows how to take care of herself. While Ellie is captive she's constantly scheming ways to get out and goes toe-to-toe with Lothaire quite a bit; I loved that she never backed down. By the end of the novel, I knew why Lothaire would develop feelings for Ellie, but I wish we could’ve seen more reasons why Ellie would have feelings for Lothaire.

I would recommend this to fans of the series who have read quite a few of the other Immortals After Dark books. However, if you haven't read any of the other novels in this series, I would not start with this one. I think Lothaire requires more background knowledge from the other books to really appreciate and understand all the events happening in this book.(less)

This was a hard book to review. I love the IAD series and Lothaire has always stood out throughout the series, so when I found out that Cole's next book was Lotharie's, I had really high expectations. Wow! I loved the book!

I loved both Lothaire, the Enemy of Old (AKA Leo) and Ellie. She is a fitting bride for Lothaire, of course it took a while for him to get it, but in the end he realized that she is better than the goddess, and that her love is all he needs, his famous ENDGAME.

I couldn't put the book down, I stayed awake until 3 AM to finish it even though I had classes this morning (getting up was really hard ;-) ).

I loved this story and pretty much read it straight through. Not your typical romance since Lothaire treats Elizabeth pretty bad for the first part of the story. However, watching him redeem himself was truly lovely. He was a very different character since he was slightly insane. Elizabeth was amazing and very well developed. One of the things I love most about Kresley Cole books is the way that she weaves her stories together. Lothaire is the bastard son of the old Horde vampire king. His mother was a princess of the lost Diacan vamps. He should have been royalty. But his father cast him and his mother out. And they were forsaken by her family. As she died, he swore his revenge --to one day rule both the Horde and the Diacans-- and it's all he has lived for ever since.

Now he has finally found his Bride, the woman fated to be his Queen. Elizabeth is a human whose body is being possessed by an evil deity. Lothaire thinks the deity is his destined mate (though obviously it's Elizabeth) and he makes it his mission to find a way to permanently expel Elizabeth's soul from her body to give Soroya the reigns. He holds her captive as he tries to track down that powerful wish-granting ring he stole from the mummy back in Pleasure of a Dark Prince. And as much as they outwardly disdain each other, there is an undeniable attraction between Elizabeth and Lothaire... one they can only fight so long, before they give in.

Here's the thing: Lothaire is sexy and ruthless. But he is also a complete asshole. He imprisons Ellie. He is cruel to her. He inflicts his will on her over and over again --and continues to do so even after he realizes she is really the one for him. He's completely self-absorbed and I felt like it took too long before he could stop seeing Ellie as beneath him. He did, however, make some powerful sacrifices and the sex was really hot... so there was some good stuff going on the romance department too. I just wish he had treated her better than he did for 90% of the book.

For me, where the book shines, are in the moments Cole lets us see the history and connections among the characters. I loved getting the backstory on Lothaire and Nix. I loved that she worked in Hag, the Oracle from Kiss of a Demon King, and gave a shout-out to Lanthe. I loved Thaddeus, from Dreams of a Dark Warrior, with a capital-L. And the last sentence of the book really knocked my socks off.

Cole sets up her spinoff Diacan series nicely --and leaves me hoping that we'll get a Kristoff and Furie book very soon. 4 stars.

Wow! Amazing 12th book in the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole. This author should be really proud of herself that she can keep producing such fresh and stimulating stories. Most other authors tend to go off the rails after book 4 or 5 but KC doesn't seem to have lost sight of the overall arc of the series nor the formula that makes it a winner.

Like many other fans I thought Lothaire might be paired with Nix but instead KC created a human female as his Bride and oh what a cracker she is!! Ellie is a stubborn, fierce, never-say-die hillbilly. Her attitude, youth, and inexperience is a perfect foil for Lothaire's haughty, world-weary and ruthlessly powerful personality. Having her 'possessed' by the evil vampire goddess 'Saroya' was a stroke of genius plot device that gave the story so much drama and suspense.

Lothaire is even more insane in this book than he was when we last saw him in Dreams of a Dark Warrior. He is obsessive and paranoid, convinced that a human Bride is impossible and that it is Saroya that has 'blooded' him. He puts Ellie through HELL! Watching him realise the truth and save the day is just breathtakingly good fun.

The main secondary characters in this story are the 'Hag' (remember her from Rydstrom's book) and Thaddeus (from Dreams of a Dark Warrior) and Nix (who seems to be falling apart). Those crazy Valkyries put in a small appearance as does Mariketa the Awaited (hilarious to hear Bowen howling in the background - Och Bowen, you'll always have my heart!). As usual there are some events at the end of the book that leave you hanging out for the next couple. Who is it going to be?????? My bet is on Kristoff (there's a big revelation about him at the end of this book) and Furie. But new stuff is also revealed about Cara. Some fascinating characters are introduced, the Dacians, Lothaire's family from his mother's side, and there are some obvious future heroes and heroines in that lot too.

This is one of the top PNR series and just keeps getting better.(less)

When I finished Lothaire I asked myself 2 questions... Was it what I wanted? Not completely. But was it what I needed? Yes.

I had waited soooo long for this book. I know my wait was no longer than anyone else who loves this series. But that sure as hell seemed like forever didn't it? Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark is my ultimate favorite paranormal series. Kresley Cole has done an amazing job staying true to this series, as well as all the many characters we read about within it. Not once have I felt she's veered off track (as Ward did in the BDB series), or become repetitive (as Kenyon did in the Dark Hunter series). She amazes me, she truly does. All the beings of the Lore she beautifully creates and then molds right before our eyes. Those creatures we love to love, and those we love to hate. KC writes character driven books. And that's what Lothaire boils down to. The two main characters.

Lothaire in the past was one of the characters we have loved to hate. Truly evil to the core. Lothaire The Enemy of Old has always had his own agenda and he never really gave a damn, or even hinted he gave a damn for anyone but himself. My biggest fear when I began reading his book was that within it, Lothaire would either turn into a wimpy, sniveling, love sick baby. So desperate for his Bride he would completely turn out of character and we wouldn't recognize him anymore. Or, there was no way KC was going to change how much we love to hate Lothaire. And make him into a "hero" in a believable and acceptable manner. These two fears was where my "need" was met. My worries were for nothing because KC pulled it off. And I shouldn't have doubted that she wouldn't be able to.

By the end my need for KC to turn Lothaire from the villain of this entire series into an actual (kind of) hero, was met. And my other fear of Lothaire betraying his true character by becoming a sniveling wimp, did not come to fruition either. He was not perfect by any means. However he was believable enough, from what we have been told in the past about vampires and their Brides to convince me that Lothaire will never be a true "good guy". But he will never again be the "villain" either, because his innately good and decent Bride, will keep him in check.

Lothaire's Bride... That's where my "wants" for this book fell a bit short. To start, Ellie was truly a sweet character. In my opinion she was very similar to Emmaline from A Hunger Like No Other. She was young, some what naive and she was from the back woods, Appellation Mountains. So her "hill billy" language and customs convinced Lothaire (at first) that she was a moron. But even with all those things that were perceived to be her short comings, Ellie was NOT a moron, and she was not a weak willed woman. She was mentally strong and at first didn't appear as though she would take crap from anyone. Unfortunately this perception of Ellie didn't hold steady throughout the entire book. There were scenes that I thought were utterly ridiculous and I had to actually roll my eyes a few times. The way Ellie approaches and speaks so openly to her family after she is separated from Lothaire, did not fit within the flow, or the characteristic traits of Ellie. It was almost to me that someone else wrote those few parts. Or it was thrown in as an afterthought to try and (unsuccessfully) tie two parts together. Either way it didn't work for me. And this part along with a few others that were similar, I didn't feel fit right and brought this down from a 5 to a 4 star read to me.

No matter what... I still love this series. And. I. Can. Not. Wait. For. Nix's. Book!!! (less)

As with Singh's Psy/Changelings and Leigh's Breeds (although that series has been plagiarized), and a very few others; this is a series that stands out from the others. This uniqueness of the series, added to Cole's high quality of writing, makes this a must-read series.

Lothaire has been the big bad in the last few books. He still is, but the happy reader is finally getting to see what makes him tick, and the many layers there are to him to delve into. He has finally found his true mate (or so he believes) in Soraya; a blood-thirsty, vain, and narcissistic goddess. She has been stripped of her immortal body, and is forced to share the body of a human until she uses it up; and then to go on to the next victim. When Lothaire finds her, she is residing in the human body of Elizabeth (Ellie), a poor young woman living in Virginia. Soraya periodically takes control of Ellie's body to go on killing sprees. This has landed Ellie on death row. Lothaire frees them from prison, and keeps them safe until he can find a way to make Ellie's body immortal for Soraya, and the get rid of Ellie's soul. That's pretty much the background of the story.

What the book does so well is to delve into Lothaire's past, and his relationships with his family. It's an excellent character study of Lothaire, there is a good deal of the book spent on inner musings from him and about him. Soraya stays hidden most of the book; she has no use for Lothaire until he makes her body immortal and gets rid of Ellie for good. This leaves Lothaire and Ellie to deal with each other; and boy, do the sparks fly. Watching (reading) Lothaire and Ellie's relationship change and grow in this story has been a treasure to savor. Words cannot describe what fun it was to read all the back and forth sniping between them as they fought their desire for each other. This was the ultimate love/hate relationship. Who know Lothaire would turn out to have some 'humanity' after all?

There are few players to this story except in passing; in dreams or flashbacks, until near the end. Hag and Soraya have secondary roles, and Lothaire's history with Nix is explained with a little more depth. (Thad has a very humorous cameo). This story, however, is all about Lothaire. His character changes over the course of the book made for an amazing read. Lothaire's vow to the Lore threw a huge monkey wrench into his HEA. It was interesting how he managed to work around that one. Also, I would love to read more about Hag; hers was such a sad tale. This was a great story; a do-not-miss for IAD fans.

Apparently Kresley Cole doesn't know how to write a bad book even if she wanted to. Lothaire is just another good book in the series that all fans will enjoy. Unfortunately, it's not her best effort till now, on the contrary it's one of the weakest IMO. The dialogues till 75% are funny and witty, Lothaire an unforgivingly bad boy till the end (you have to appreciate that she didn't turn him into a 'nice guy' to make him more lovable) and Ellie a very nice heroine, clever and feisty but...more
