I read this debut novel years ago and found it truly remarkable! What a shame the author hasn't written any more books!
This novel is about a group of Vietnamese and Hmong refugees who are taking an ESL course in a high school in Missoula, Montana. Written from the point of view of the teacher ("Mees Janet"), we get a glimpse into their harrowing escapes from southeast Asia and their struggles to assimilate into a new culture. Janet is dealing with emotions brought on by her students' problems as well as her divorce that happened 8 years before, the latter by forming a relationship that is not without its own com ...more
