Can you get any more EMO than that?! While the book is a smooth read, and the writing is good... everything else is lacking. I felt like the characters were extremely shallow and lacking any depth. Proclaiming that they love each other after only couple of hours is completely unbelievable, regardless of how much "connection" they felt to each other. Having a friend that's obviously has social problems (and eating disorders probably), but completely ignoring it instead of saying something? In my...more

So, I've made it my project in 2012 to read a lot more e-books on my Kindle Fire (as well as rereading old favorites and dwindling down this huge TBR stack that's toppling over my dining room table -- which of course can't be used for dining since it's storing books -- duh!) So, when I found SHELTER free on Amazon, I honestly wasn't expecting much. I've read a lot of free e-books off Amazon lately, and most just weren't that readable, to be honest.

I'm pleased to say that SHELTER by Tara Shuler w...more

This is the first part of a new YA book series by Tara Shuler. These days it seems almost inevitably that a lot of YA novels feature vampires, which isn't a bad thing as such, especially as I liked the unique take on them presented here.
While smoothly written, and definitely a light read, the book definitely lacks depth, and the story itself - vampire girl meets clingy vampire boy meets hot vampire hunter - was run-of-the mill filled with stereotypes and no big surprises. On the upside I have t...more

This book was quick and easy to read however, being the pessimist that I am, do not believe that someone can be "so in love" with someone they just met to the point where they are all clingy and crazy about it--almost to the point of being obssessive. And to have 2 guys fall in love with Alice at the same time was reaching...then again, we are talking about a book about vampires.
I thought that the main character was naive a bit but Kai was ANNOYING. I have never met a guy like that, even though...more

"Shelter" provides an interesting interpretation on vampire lore. These vampires are not immortal, they simply age well. They do not perish from holy water or fear garlic, and a bullet to the heart will do just as well as a stake. Most importantly: vampires are a race, not a communicable disease. Our protagonist is Alice, a seventeen year old vampiress who is forced to enroll into human high school for her last year of school. She is reluctant to enroll -- after all, humans are purely food.

There is something about vampires that is so thrilling, it’s no coincidence that the majority of the newer Young Adult books have embraced them to the degree they have. This book, the first in a series, is one of the many that provide an entertaining view into the vampire’s relationship with humans in an urban setting.
The story itself is interesting, with various aspects that are new to the vampire genre, changing things up a little from the usual solely-blood-drinkers and night-time-loving bunc...more

1st off, I really hate to give a bad review to a book when there isn't really anything wrong with it. This book was free on my kindle. I like free things, so I went ahead and downloaded the book. I've actually had this book on my kindle for a long time before I actually read it. It's only about 200 pages, so I read it in a couple hours.
There isn't any specific thing wrong with this book, it just wasn't for me. The story was just too easy. The characters fell in love far to quickly for me. I und...more

This wasn't the worst book I have read lately but it wasn't great either. The characters were weak and the plot was thin. Alice and Kai falling "in love" and wanting to be together "forever" at their first meeting was nauseating. Kai as a whole was repulsive in his neediness. Alice was awful for liking that about him. I liked Will okay and the Mother but they were so underdeveloped they faded into the background. Jamie was starting to blossom into a character with some potential by the time the...more

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. The copy I read had several grammar errors that took away from my enjoyment while I was reading. Although the characters were interesting, they didn't feel like real people to me. Although she seemed the most real, I disliked that Alice was so weak with her decisions. She swayed every time she was tempted with something. That really bothered me. Kai was similarily weak. He wanted sympathy but then made himself unsympathetic, something difficult to do beca...more

Everyone has secrets, especially vampires who are just trying to live out their lives in a human world as inconspicuously as possible. Alice Wright has been sheltered from the human world for her first seventeen years, but now her mother for some reason wants her to have the same experiences as a human teenager. That means going to high school. Alice is a shy, somewhat awkward girl who discovers that the stereotypes on television became stereotypes for a reason. There are the mean girls in schoo...more

Shelter is the story of Alice Whitlock, a seemingly normal 17-year-old girl who just happens to be a vampire. Alice is torn between two guys, one a vampire, one a vampire hunter-in-training; one is passive aggressive, one is just plain old-fashioned aggressive; in other words, perfect boyfriend material - if you happen to be a complete self-loathing twit, that is. But they're both gorgeous so what's a girl to do? Well, she might consider running very, very fast in any other direction but, hey, t...more

I read a few of the reviews before I read this book, so I knew going into it that it wouldn't be stellar. I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. I read it because I was curious, I wanted to see if the bad reviews were true. Unfortunately, most of them were. This was not a spectacular book that I will read again and again. This was an OK book at best. I couldn't relate to Kai at all because I can't relate to "sensitive" guys and he was just way too emotional for me. I actually really loved Max unt...more

Initially I thought this might be just another vampire story, formulaic and predictable. However, I was pleasently surprised. I was going to read it anyways since I actually haven't read a vampire tale in a while. And then when I started reading the story was so different than other vampire books I have read. It deals with important issues and although romance plays a huge part in the plot, there is something that goes deeper than that.

One of the issues Tara Schuler has her characters go through...more

Alice is a young girl who happens to be a vampire and she is also attending high school with humans for the first time this year since her mom wants her to interact with humans. She was scared about interacting with humans until she meets another vampire at a party given by one of her classmates. At first she doesn’t know that he is a vampire until he reveals himself to her and there is another one of her classmates called Max that is also interested in her. It turns out that Max is a vampire hu...more

I enjoy YA fiction and found this to be a captivating and interesting read. I liked the different take on vampires - not being portrayed as immortal and had families and children. To me this was an interesting baseline for the story.

I enjoyed the characters but found myself getting frustrated with Kai's immaturity - a total difference from the self-confident Max.

This is a captivating read and will appeal to those that enjoy Twilight and other YA paranormal romances. Be warned that this is a cl...more

No fanks ver much. The guys look like former members of UK 80's band Duran Duran.

This story showed promise at the beginning but then ... If you like strong dominant male characters, this book is not for you. I just couldn't feel anything for a crying 19 year old who got slapped by his mommy followed by his clinging and whining behavior. And it's just not believable that a vampire wouldn't know about another vampire and think of him as human. Ok, it could pass for not knowing a hunter, even though when you read all through the book how vampires are stronger than humans and th...more

Much like how I feel about the Twilight series, there was simply far too much teen angst and silliness for me to enjoy this at all, unfortunately.

There's wasn't any depth to the characters or the plot. About 95% of the book was taken up with the characters' romantic interests with each other, the overplaying of emotions (screaming, yelling, shrieking, hissing, snarling, and other bodily reactions that were far too dramatic), and the contrived conflicts involving the silly little love triangle.

Not a bad story...reminds me immensely of Twilight. Only "Bella" is already a vampire and she's the one going to a human school. "Edward" is also a vampire and they fall in love, yay. "Jacob" isn't a werewolf, he is a hunter. Which, surprisingly enough, hunter's only lot in life is to hunt down and kill vampires. So "Bella" has feelings for "Jacob" the hunter, as well as "Edward". So ya...Twilight all over. The only reason I read it was because it was free on amazon for kindle's. The character's...more

Interesting premise, which is why I applied for the member giveaway at librarything for an arc copy.

Unfortunately, it was mostly dialogue and a lot of telling over showing along with the popular current YA vampire-related storyline as of late: having to choose between two or more boys, one of whom carries with him a huge horrible secret that will destroy them all. I couldn't even get to the 50 page mark without feeling extremely disappointed and a little dejected. This book seemed like it had s...more

This book is fairly good so at. I wanted to read interview with a vampire by Anne rice but I got this instead. Not one of the best books I've read but I have nothing else to read.
I like how in the big honing she gives a numb of background information on what she is and the history of her people and all that. I think she should I been more cautious when she met Kai. You ani't jut go off to an old church with some dude that's older than you.

This was another acquisition during my obsession with free books in January.

Again, the writing style and plot development were incredibly poor - I very much understand why this was a self-published effort. It doesn't appear to have ever crossed an editor's desk and it shows. Poor spelling and grammar, one-dimensional characters, and a nonsensical plot make this a very slow read.

The main character is a female teenage "vampire". I use that term because the author did, but it is like no vampirism...more

While this story has a good plot line, I think the story is pretty poorly executed. To begin with, there is a lot of telling instead of showing. The actions of Alice, the main character read something like this: My phone rang. I picked it up. It was Will. I answered it. I said. He said, etc.

Also, I was highly disappointed with the vampire part of this book. While Alice and her family are vampire's, the actual story line revolving around this aspect of their lives is really downplayed. In the be...more

This book was a fast read. It flows along at a smooth but fast past. It definitely was not what I expected at all when I started reading it. I know this is fiction and all but this story was so unbelievable to me. Just hours after the main character Alice meets Kai at a party they are suddenly so in love with each other and are telling each other that they love them. Alice's mom being fine with Kai living with them just after meeting him and not caring that they are sleeping in the same room. I...more

I won this e-book from LibraryThing Members Giveaways. A vampire story that is short and easy to read. Aimed at the teenage/YA audience. There is some similarity to Twilight, both heroines are the new girls at the local high school but that is where the similarity ends. I liked the characters. Kai is a tortured soul but his behaviour is explained as the story continues and Max does sound to good to be true. I shall have to wait to find out if this is so, in book two. An enjoyable, light read.

Major eye rolling with this one, let me tell you. The entire thing was so painfully funny! The story is poorly written and no characterization at all. Don't let me even begin with Kai Walker,he has a cool name and that's the only thing I like about him. Come on, eat some pancake and man up!? I didn't like him at all (a) All he do is whine and cry (b) he has major dependency issues...and he is the protagonist main squeeze *sigh*
I'm wasting my time doing this review.

A light YA paranormal novel that reads fairly quickly. Shuler has an interesting take on Vampires and the ones who hunt them. Some of the book focuses on your typical teenage drama, but more time is given to weightier relationship issues: child abuse, parental expectations, clingy and possessive relationships. I did find myself wishing for more paranormal content and a little more action, but that might mean I've come to expect more blood and gore than is needed. The ending was a bit of a cliff...more

Not sure about the paranormal but not a bad read for the Tween set. 17 year old April is going to school for the first time after being hime schooled her entire life. Not only does she have to worry about the mean girls and homework, but how to deal with all the humans in school, since she is a vampire. Would have like to see the characters a little more fleshed out but all in all was not a bad way to spend an afternoon in the sun.

Shelter, as a whole, did win me over with its engaging storyline, even though some of the character’s personas made me cringe and irritated. Some aspects in the story work for me, some didn’t. Nonetheless, I am still hungry for more drama and action and really looked forward to reading the next books.
