Written by Rimbaud at the age of 18 in the wake of his tempestuous affair with fellow poet Paul Verlaine, "A Season in Hell" has been a touchstone for anguished poets, artists, and lovers for more than a century. An account of a damned soul, wrought with a savage beauty & unapologetic in its dialectical whimsy. Entrenched in this dialectic are the seeds of Rimbaud's decision to relinquish poetry, which considering the beauty of some of the passages is heartbreaking. His decision to abandon the horrors of poverty to support himself, to become a trader, ensconced in such descriptions as "je serai oisif et brutal", "I shall be idle & brutal", may seem shocking to those who don't share Rimbaud's visi ...more

I usually don't go in for the type of darkness Rimbaud is so famous for. Despite that fact he remains one of my favorite poets and this is one I always go back to. I don't recommend this to those who do not speak french. Reading it in his native tounge really adds to the experience.

Recommends it for: anyone who is interested by poetry

This is one of the great works of Western Literature that was fueled by fire.

French poet and adventurer, who stopped writing verse at the age of 21, and became after his early death an inextricable myth in French gay life. Rimbaud's poetry, partially written in free verse, is characterized by dramatic and imaginative vision. "I say that one must be a visionary - that one must make oneself a VISIONARY." His works are among the most original in the Symbolist movement. Rimbau ...more
