Every child wants to avoid bedtime. In What! Cried Granny An Almost Bedtime Story, Patrick gets to stay up all night. Patrick is sleeping at his grandma’s house, and doesn’t have a bed, a blanket, a pillow or a teddy bear! His grandma makes all of these things from scratch as Patrick realizes he needs them. By the time she is finished, the sun has come up!

This book shows the love and dedication that granny has for Patrick. Basically Patrick needs a bed, blanket, pillow and teddy bear to sleep at night and granny spends the night working on making all of those happen for Patrick so he can sleep well and tight. Granny's love and dedication to her grandson is a unconditional love that kids see from relatives, parents, and especially grandparents. Whether Patrick doesn't want to go to bed or not is not the story. It's the love and dedication till su...more
It's bedtime at grandma's house, but the boy is missing a few vital things he needs to go to bed (like an actual bed). Every time he informs granny of this, she cries "WHAT?" and runs to make it for him. This goes on and soon it's daytime and no-longer bedtime.
I like this story for the repetition and opportunity to use volume to engage the children in my preschool storytime class. The colours in this book are large and impactful, and I enjoy seeing a grandmother who can cut down a tree and build...more

ok...I am not sure I will be this accommodating when I become a grandmother, but....What! Cried Granny: An Almost Bedtime Story is full of heart-warming vignettes which prove just how much Granny loves her Grandson. It is his first sleep-over, after all, and Granny wants to make sure he is comfy and cozy. Good thing she has all the supplies she needs to make his overnight a rip-roarin' success!
My absolute favorite storytime book. Can be used with elementary school kids too. I've read this book at almost every new storytime I've done. Hilarious story that has plenty of things to talk about with the illustrations. Also, an awesome interactive storytime if you make the kids yell "WHHHHAAAAT?!" with you.

I like this book. In this book Grandma seems more like SUPER GRANDMA. This book reminds me of my late Grandmother. She was my super grandma. This book also talks about the items you will need if you are going to a sleep over. You have to be prepared.
Extension: Each child will bring an item that they will need for a sleepover.

My kids LOVE this book - which automatically bumps this book to a 5-star review - up from my original inclination of giving it a 4-star. It is fun to read. I like how the illustrations show the process of how Granny makes each item. Nicely done. A great fit for grandparents looking for a cute, fun sleep-over book.

This book is a fantastic read aloud for anyone who works with or reads to kids. I've read it at several storytimes, and it always gets a great reaction. The story follows Patrick and Granny during his first sleep-over at her house. He has a string of fairly predictable needs: a bed, a blanket, a pillow, and a teddy bear. His very crafty and obliging Granny provides each, but the tasks keep them up all night. Kids really respond well to the predictable nature of Patrick's requests, and enjoy bein...more
I enjoyed this one--the illustrations are nice, and the story is funny, and is one that I think will work well for preschool story times. There's enough repetition to allow kids to anticipate and get involved with the story, and it's also entertaining for adults, which is always a big plus!

A boy has a sleepover at grandmom and he doesn't have a bed. She makes one and then he announces he doesn't have a pillow and so on. As he asks her she says "What!" Although she screams at him, she tells him that she love him and that she would do anything for him.
Kate Lum has a genius for depicting the satisfaction of a job well-done, and this lively and hilarious story is a favorite with my woodworking mother-in-law and her grandchildren.

Sure, grandmothers indulge their grandchildren, and they are tremendoudly clever, but this story is "over the top!" Patrick is a bit too demanding as well. The illustrations are flat and a bit Picasso-ish. Not a fan of this story.
When her grandson Patrick arrives for his first sleepover, Granny's resourceful efforts to provide him with a bed, pillow, and other necessities result in a sleepless night for both of them.
