This is a good romantic suspense book. What it's not is a good BDSM book. To me, this falls into the rather unfortunate genre of "BDSM books written by vanilla folks, for vanilla folks" (a category coined recently by Kitty Thomas). Obviously I don't know what this author does in the bedroom, but that's the kind of shallow perspective of BDSM that I found here. I was okay with the misinformation. While I've read some erotica before, as well as BDSM, I'm not as well-read in this genre as in others. However, I'm familiar with BDSM from a personal stance and I have to disagree with some of the other reviewers who complained that this was "vanilla BDSM." Brynn needs Reid’s help in getting into The Ranch and posing as an undercover submissive to confirm that Kelsey is there and help her out of her latest bout of trouble. Reid offers his help through their mutual friend Jace who is a member of The Ranch. I am a die-hard fan of second chance love. What I enjoyed about the set up of the story is the author arranged the chapters to rotate “then” and “now” for the first half of the book. In doing this we get a strong visualization of how Brynn and Reid’s romance developed ten years ago as teens and how their relationship fell apart due to a horrific incident that Reid is completely unaware of. With this back story, we are able to better understand why both Brynn and Reid feel betrayed by the other and are unwilling to trust now.

Roni Loren established a well-defined couple diving into the social differences of both Brynn and Reid as teens and how it affects their individual self-worth as adults. Reid has lived his share of self-loathing as a son of a convicted rapist. When he discovers a desire for dominance and control, it only heightens his overall lack of self-worth. Brynn is the product of an affair of her mother’s prostitution which eventually led to murder. Both Reid and Brynn’s past family history comes back to haunt them in the present and brings a new terror to their lives that neither expected. While Ms. Loren set an immediate and heated chemistry between Brynn and Reid, the actual plot fell flat and became disjointed throughout the story. Several important issues were just skirted over and not resolved. Once the true killer of Brynn’s mother is revealed the suspense was already lost as well as a major scene needed for Reid to have closure and peace for himself. Ms. Loren totally skipped the ramifications of who the killer is and the emotional affect it should have had on both of the main characters. I actually went back to re-read to see if I missed the confrontation and I confirm that I didn’t. Also, I have read many authors that write BDSM with D/s play and to me this was almost a sham of the lifestyle. The only evidence of BDSM was the title use of “sir” and most of the time it was spoken in a playful joking tone. There is also one blindfold/bondage ménage scene and some light butt slapping. With what I have read in prior BDSM storylines, this does not constitute a BDSM lifestyle. The seriousness of trust/submission was not explored and came across as more casual role play than a lifestyle. Finally as the story progressed, the compelling and sensual dialogue that captivated me in the beginning was a memory in the last half of the book.

For a debut release, I believe Ms. Loren’s creativity of character and emotion was adamantly strong, but I believe with better editing, a more cohesive voice and structured plotline, she can improve volumes in her overall storytelling.

I don't normally read erotic romance, but as a writer of upmarket women's fiction, I thought it would be good for me to push beyond my comfort zone. I discovered Roni Loren on Twitter, and she had a lot of smart things to say. I read the book excerpt on Amazon, found it exceedingly well-written, but felt some trepidation with the subject matter. I am still swooning over the hero of this story: Reid Jamison. **fanning self ** There is such heart-felt emotions poured into this book.

Book synopsis:

By the description of this book I thought this to be an erotic contemporary romance between a male and female. There is no indication whatsoever in the blurb that this story would be anything other than a male/female exclusive relationship.

If I had known there would be a 'hero + heroine + one' in the sex scenes, I wouldn’t have bothered. I don’t want to be surprised by a m/f/m . There were no content warnings prefacing this.

This is a great, fast paced story with romance, thriller, and erotic elements. It's well written and entertaining, and I genuinely liked the heroine. The story involves BDSM and Roni Loren handles the psychology of BSDM participants really well by showing men who are sensitive to the feelings and needs of their partners.

I haven't read too many erotic romance novels, but this was a well plotted, wonderfully saucy read without being overwhelming about the physical aspects. Highly recommend!

For the first erotic romance I've ever read, I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I'm a follower of Roni's Fiction Groupie blog, so I knew I'd enjoy her writing style going into this, but I simply could not put this book down (or rather, I had to for real life and wish I hadn't had to). I was reading an authors blog recently and unfortunately, I can't remember whose it was, but what stuck with me was that she said she didn't like reading BDSM by authors who weren't in the lifestyle because she "could see the seams." I had several issues with this book and I think spoilers are necessary to explain why.

I was reading an authors blog recently and unfortunately, I can't remember whose it was, but what stuck with me was that she said she didn't like reading BDSM by authors who weren't in the lifestyle because she "could see the seams." Like it was sewn together research. I think that sums up a lot of my issue with this book. I'm no expert (at all!) but some of the charachter decisions and reactions seemed so arbitrary and contrary to how I would think the characters would act that it pulled me out of the story.

First, our heroine, Brynn, has apparently no issue after our hero, Reid orders her to strip in the driveway in front of another character, Jace and then proceeds to take control in the bedroom. (This is her first D/s experience) If I were in that situation, even it I was turned on by it, I would be doing some serious soul searching afterwards to try and figure out why I felt the was I did. Brynne experiences exhibitionism, bondage, and domination all in one night and never questions why she enjoyed what happened? She immediately jumps to the conclusion that it's just how she's wired and that it's nice not to have to make decisions in this one area of her life. I had a hard time suspending my disbelief over how quickly she was okay with everything.

Second, while at "The Ranch", an exclusive BDSM retreat Brynne just wanders off (after restraining her Dom) because she needs some time to think. And then she runs into the owner of The Ranch and he apparently isn't alarmed that a sub is wandering around outside "thinking things through". It seemed very strange to me (again, no experience at anyplace like this!) that a sub would be just wandering around outside alone and no one would think it was odd.

Side note: I saw a tweet by Meljean Brook the other day that cracked me up. She said that in Romancelandia, BDSM clubs in America were as common as Dukes in England. : )

Finally (and this is a big spoiler), we find out that Brynne has been raped in the past and then later she is kidnapped by her rapist and whipped in his private dungeon (really?!?) but when she reunites with the Hero, her love and trust for him, erase her fears. I really had a hard time believing that it wouldn't be a long road to her feeling easy with any man, even the Hero.

I struggle yet again with what to say about a book that was well written, with a solid story that somehow didn't draw me in. I can't put my finger on exactly why. I do agree with Amber to a degree that this was not a good BDSM book. It certainly isn't a book full of juicy BDSM scenes or interesting toys and fun ways to use them.

When Brynn visits her sister’s place to find her, instead she finds herself accosted. Brynn was raped before and fights heroically but the inebriated stranger overcomes her. Thankfully she is saved by Reid. He is working on a case with Kelsey to prove a man’s innocence. He tells Brynn that her sister is probably at an exclusive retreat that caters to BDSM, mostly likely to find the truth and free an innocent man. Brynn immediately wants to find Kelsey and bring her to safety. When her sister suddenly goes missing and is targeted, Byrnn knows she has to find her but the only person who can help her is Reid - the man from her past who haunts her dreams. Can she really open herself up again to save her sister by entering the retreat? And what happens when Reid’s wild side actually turns her on?

I like that this book explores the past and present relationship between Reid and Brynn. The author is not afraid to delve into their history and let us peel into what makes them tick. Reid is afraid of his need for dominance. Brynn is afraid of her past when her mother was abused and she was raped. Brynn’s courage and willingness to help others make her a worthy and sympathetic heroine Although this is a erotic book, the author takes the time to reveal each character before she has them hop into bed, which definitely gave the story more sexual tension and depth. This book is sizzling hot and also includes a MMF scene. Their past which includes Reid insecurities about his real sexual needs and his family’s interference in his life and Brynn’s unstable mother also add to the story’a complexity.

However, while I liked that the author goes into the past to reveal how Brynn and Red met and why their relationship failed, after a certain point I wished the story would stay in the present because it became a bit disruptive to the storyline.

Two lovers with a past who finally find love together is heartwarming and HOT!

I love this prize," category. The BDSM is light, compared to some of the other books I've read, but this book is about so much more than the alternate lifestyle our hero and heroine engage in. It's the emotional journey they took to finally embrace what they enjoy and letting go of the past in order to move forward.

Told from both the present day and past, we get the history of Brynn LeBreck and Reid Jamison from their summer fling, to broken hearts and spirits, to solving the mystery around Brynn's mother's murder and her sister's disappearance.

Brynn and Reid have a lot of history. They met while she worked as a receptionist at his uncle campaign office one summer. They both fight their inner demons with their budding relationship (he fears his sexual desires mean he's more like his rapist father than he wants to be and she's from the wrong side of the tracks with a prostitute mother), but once they open up with each other they begin to explore their sexual desires in BDSM and be who they truly are.

But outside forces have a way of ripping people apart and that is what happens with Brynn and Reid.

Move forward ten years and fate pushes Brynn and Reid back together when he starts working at the women's advocacy group where Brynn is a therapist. All their old wounds open up, perhaps the biggest the fact that Reid represents the man who was convicted of killing her mother. But those get pushed to the side when Brynn's sister Kelsey disappears after a pleading midnight phone call for Brynn to meet her.

Brynn and Reid soon find themselves at a BDSM retreat posing as a Dom and his sub in hopes of finding Kelsey. What they get instead is the realization that what abruptly ended ten years ago still burns between the two of them. The problem is, the two of them have so much emotional baggage over their perceived sexual hang ups along with their mistrust of each other, you wonder how they are ever going to get passed it all.

It's Brynn and Reid's story that kept me engaged. I didn't so much care who really killed Brynn's mother or what they had to do with her sister, I just wanted the two of them to realize what they had. There was the old little twist of who Brynn's biological father was and how that lead to the mother's murder, sister's kidnapping, Brynn's abuse....but it was still Brynn and Reid that I wanted to read about on each and every page.(less)

I've been following Roni's blog for a couple years; I saw when she got her agent, and then not much later when she got her book deal. Roni is an extraordinarily giving blogger: giving of her knowledge, her passion, and her time (those blog posts aren't short, people). As soon as the details of Crash Into You came out, I knew that I would be reading it. I also knew that I was going to enjoy, and I wasn't wrong.

I'd thought this would be my first erotic romance, but it turns out that it isn't. My first straight contemporary ER, yes, but there wasn't a thing in the book that I haven't read in some of my darker urban fantasy/paranormal reads. :) However, the sexual encounters were more frequent, which was nice.

Roni did a great job creating a female MC that I could like. So often romance heroines are TSTL, but not Brynn. Not only was she smart and funny, but she was extremely likable and pitiable without being corny or wimpy or soft in any way. I hope writers like Roni are opening the doors to more modern, diverse types of main characters; I know it'll make me a happy reader.

Reid, the male lead, was definitely likable as well, even though I kept finding myself distracted by Jace... Ahhh, Jace. I can't wait to read his story in MELT INTO YOU, the second in the series.

It was like Roni knew exactly what I'd like to see in the story, and then wrote it. Particularly the first sexual encounter at The Ranch. Ohhh yes. I won't be forgetting that one.

For the most part, I liked the ten-years-ago storyline, but there were a few chapters from Then that I felt like were too long--mostly because I was dying to get back to The Ranch. I had a little trouble connecting 20-year-old Reid with 30-year-old Reid, but that's partially because I kept imagining him as a silver fox, for some reason.

The book's plot kept me humming along as well. It was pushed just enough for us to remember why things were happening, but not so forefront that we couldn't enjoy some slap and tickle. And speaking of slap and tickle, I really enjoyed learning some about D/s and BDSM. Roni did a wonderful job describing things, so even those who've never done it should have no problem imagining what it's like... (and maybe getting some new inspiration).

This isn't an author-issue, but I will say that there were some funky formatting problems on my Kindle, namely the strange presence of hyphens everywhere. If you can overlook it, then great, but if that sort of thing bothers you, consider the paperback version.

Overall, I thought this was a fine debut! Roni is a wonderful person, and I'm thrilled that her product lived up to my expectation. (less)

The book alternated between the past and the present and actually started really good, but after the first quarter I only continued reading it for the scenes because the romance was full of my pet peeves, including H/h keeping secrets from one another, the heroine lying to the hero in the past and in the present, her breaking up with him again ‘just because it’s better this way’ and so on. Besides, it was not an emotional read in the parts that referred to the present. H/h had a great love story...more
