It's amazing what a little magic can do...

Ruby Night Divine is a gun shop owner. She's also a witch who knows magic can fail. She's experienced it first hand, with full-blown tragic consequences. Smith & Wesson is a whole hell of a lot more reliable, and nothing's as cathartic as the ability to put a few holes in the things that piss you off. Like Derek Stormwind.

A witch, who owns a gun shop, has pushed away the man she loves and hasn’t seen him in three years. Not a bad way to start a new series, especially when in the first paragraph he’s walking back into her life, right at her and poor Ruby can’t believe her eyes when she sees the man she still loves. She was the one who forced their separation three years earlier, putting a spell on him that drove him out of her life without putting up a fight. Now he’s back

I’ve read a few of Joey W. Hill’s Vampire Queen series and really liked the darker, erotic BDSM feel to them. Something About Witches is actually set in the same world, but with a new cast of characters. I would say this book isn’t quite as dark as the ones I have read, but still h

A big fan of Ms. Hill, it's always interesting to read a new series. This one is a bit older, but it's fresh to me. I liked it! 3.5 star. This one I liked because of the magic and characters.

Ruby is a conflicted witch with some serious Mommy issues. It's influenced how she's developed her magic. In addition, it messed with her mind to throw away a wonderful man, Derek Stormwind.

This story while involving quite a bit of witchery, still focuses on the complications of love and trust. Ruby sets De

Something About Witches is the first book in Joey W. Hill’s newest series, Arcane Shot. Joey is best known for her super steamy hot hot hot BDSM erotica titles. In the Arcane Shot series, she has gone where she has not gone before: she has gone softer. Please do not get me wrong. This book is hot hot HOT. In fact, I was really surprised to see so many mild BDSM elements in a paranormal romance book. And I liked it. I liked it a lot. There was one scene

I feel so disloyal only giving SAW 3 stars. And one of them is because I'm such a huge Joey W. Hill fan.

I was halfway through this book when I thought "Damn, you know what would be nice? Some plot thrown in." because there was sex. A lot of sex. Don't get me wrong, I like sex in books. I like well written sex in books and Joey W. Hill has written some of my favourite books and sex scenes...but this one.

It was constant. When they weren't having sex, they were talking about having sex. And it was
This pushed most of my no-no buttons. Reunited lovers, Ruby pushed Derek away 3years ago but still loved him now they're getting back together. They're initial courtship is shown in characters reminiscing, made me feel there was a prequel I missed. Older immortal man has known the heroin since girlhood. Even though Derek tells us it's not creepy, I still find it creepy. Derek has known Ruby since she was 5 and he was her first lover at 20, just creepy to me. Uneven distribution of torment. mind blowingly awesome. This book had so much depth and complexity and heart... I was amazed at Ms. Hill's genius. I sat down expecting to read a few chapters before bed and I'm now at 3am having finished this book b/c it was impossible to put down. I'm speechless and very much impressed by how much I loved this book. *this* is what I look for and what I rarely find. The magical elements were completely natural and organic to the story and the relationship between Ruby and Derek was perfect. Hea ...more
Loved this! Joey Hill's Vampire Queen series is my all time fave series. Although this book didn't have the full erotic spice that are so appealing in other Joey Hill books, it still kept me turning the page and staying up late.

Derek - oh, Derek - simply perfect. Patient until he needed to go all alpha (I especially enjoyed his and Mykhael's scenes). Love me some possessive alpha. Ruby was a great character to cheer for, even when I was yelling at her to just tell Derek her secret. I like gals w

Something About Witches is the first book in her new Arcane Shot series and I thought it would be a perfect time for me to start in with her and a new series. I was right, because I definitely am a fan of her writing.

As with all of JWH's books, you get the detail, the in-depth reasonings, and the heart/soul wrenching thoughts/actions of all the main characters - and this one didn't disappoint at all. Totally well-thought-out descriptions of all the 'magic/k' involved - which to me, made it completely believable and realistic. Clever, clever word-crafting!

Ah, but now we have a flawed heroine in Ruby, who has given parts of her soul over to the 'Dark' - with valid, if misconceived reasoning; and a most incredi

I love Joey W. Hill--she's one of my favorite authors and her Vampire Queen series is also one of my favorites, but this book was just eh to me. Waaaay too much repetitive talking about feelings (until I just started skimming the feelings and only reading the dialogue) and too little plot. And like someone else, I had a problem with the pet name, "girl". Even though it was explained that "girl" didn't mean "giiiirl", every time I read it, that's how it came out in my head--kinda ruined the roman ...more

OMFG...I loved this cast of characters. I wasn't sure if I was going to like a story about witches but I was blown out of the water.
Ruby was a total mess, with so much pain and loss in her life that she couldn't see the joy and love of a totally committed man right in front of her.
Derek Stormwind was the man every woman fantatizes about, and dreams about. He was so in love with Ruby and so forgiving...

From the start of this book I felt like I was in excellent writerly hands. This was actually my first Joey Hill read, but it certainly won't be my last. The world-building and the way the magic worked was really inventive and juicy, and there was a strong emotional story underneath it all.

It's rare I find a book that's emotionally touching and smart and sizzling hot, all at once.

And, this is an oddball thing to say, but I really enjoyed that the picture on the cover so thoroughly represents how

So I started this series out of order. I read Book #2 or the Arcane Shot series and enjoyed that. A lot. So I went to a different library to look for book #1 and let's just say I'm glad I read Book 2 first.

Honestly, I struggled through this book. The characters were flat and the plot was almost non-existent. One of the things I enjoy about Urban Fantasy as a genre, is that is allows for strong female main characters paid sometimes paired with equally strong male characters but in all ways the w

I'm not one for starting reading existing series that already have a tonne of books available, the lazy part of me knows I'll never catch up so although I was aware Joey W. Hill had another really popular series about Vampires I thought this new Arcane Shot series would be the perfect opportunity for me to read some of her books. I like a bit of paranormal smut so I figured this series was prefect.

Something About Witches is the new series written by Joey W Hill and her first mass market book. It is planned to be a trilogy about three witches. The main characters of this first book are Ruby, a witch who has started using Dark powers for some unknown reason, and Derek, a centuries old Light Guardian and sorcerer.

Arcane Shot Book 1! What a great opening book to a great new series! I have never been a bit fan of paranormals, in fact, Joey's KOTB series is how I got hooked on her stuff. But this book was outstanding. The pace at the beginning was a bit slow, but the last 2/3rds of it made up for that in spades.

Ruby was a very wonderful woman, but had been left for nothing by a self centered mother. Then she lost her child on top of that, and then pushed away the man she loved in her grief. But she could no

I wanted to love this book, as I am a huge fan of Joey W. Hill. Her Vampire Mistress series is one of my all time favorites. Anywho, I just couldn't connect with the characters and magic just isn't my thing. Having said that, going in I knew it would be hard for me to digest, but because I LOVE Hill's writing I thought the magic would be a blip in the story; so not the case.

So, in brief...I happen to be an major fan of Joey Hill. I'm used to her erotic romance with heavy BDSM and this is in the realm of paranormal romance, certainly hot, but not quite erotic romance. There is very minimal BDSM.
