Molly Lou Melon is the cutest little eensy-weensy girl you've ever seen. She needs a ladder to climb up onto her bed. Her self-confidence, however, is bigger than Andre the Giant. No matter what ugly things that stereotypically-red-headed class bully Ronald Durkin says to her, she just grins her giant grinning grin and goes right ahead doing whatever it is she's doing, from creating the most beautiful paper snowflake ever to scoring a touchdown even though she's wearing a football helmet that co...more

Molly Lou Melon is a spunky, fumble-fingered little first-grader with buck teeth and a voice that sounds like "a bullfrog being squeezed by a boa constrictor." She believes her grandma when she tells her things like "Walk as proudly as you can and the world will look up to you" and "Sing out clear and strong and the world will cry tears of joy." Molly Lou Melon's belief in herself is tested when the bully at her new school starts to pick on her.

My above remark about the cover might suggest that Catrow’s pencil and watercolor illustrations in Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon are just not my cup of tea. While I’m still figuring out why I’m not drawn to the cover*, I can say had I picked it up and flipped open to the first pages I would have brought it home. The color palette Catrow chose is my cup of tea. And I adore his use of proportion. Molly Lou is tiny. But what Catrow also does is not lose her in the greatness of her surroundings. What h...more
What a delight! I just adore Molly Lou for her sweet self-confidence and the joy she finds in (and brings to) life. Little Molly Lou is smaller than all the other kids in her class, she has buck teeth, and can't sing a good note. But, her grandmother taught her that, if she carries herself with confidence, the world will look up to her... and if she smiles, the whole world smiles, too... And all is well and good--until the Melon family moves to a new house, and Molly Lou begins a new school. Sin...more

So I just learned about this site, We Give Books, where you can read books online, for free, and support literacy programs. Where has this site been all my life?! Obviously I signed up, and read my first book within 5 minutes. It seems that they are all children's books, which is fine with me. They are easy, cute and reading them makes a difference. Why WOULDN'T I do this?

Every once in a while I find a childrens' book that seems to say exactly what I want it too, and this is one of them. I'd like to thank Ms. Jane from B is 4 Books for recommending this in her newsletter, although perhaps I should have just listened to my daughter's review of the book back in September. She told me about a book her teacher read to them in school, about a first grader named Molly - well yes, my daughter's name is Molly and she is in first grade; So right off the bat, Molly was dra...more
This is a story of a young girl who never thinks she is good enough. She is to small, has buck teeth and the voice of a bullfrog. Molly would normally be angry and upset but her grandmother tells her differently. Since her grandmother believes in her it makes her believe in herself. When she has to move to a new school where she is bullied it does NOT phase her because her grandmother has made her so confident. I love this book and the illustrations are wonderful. If I were to implement this int...more

But then Molly Lou has to start in a new school. Ronald Durkin calls her "SHRIMPO!" and "BUCKY-TOOTH BEAVER!" But Molly Lou has learned a lot from her grandma and knows just how to put him in his place-in a very satisfying way.

Molly Lou Melon has a fantastic grandmother that teachers her how to be proud of yourself as you are. The use of adjectives assists in teaching students some common adjectives that are important for students to know and understand.
Molly Lou Melson has to move away from her grandmother that helped her gain her self-confidence. She eventually realized how fantastic she really is, even when a student is picking on her initially. It is about letting your self-confidence shine through, even when the...more

I love this book!!! I love the message that it sends. No matter how small, tall, thin, fat, gigantic, bucked-toothed, freckled-faced, or anything you are a beautiful! I definitely want my students to know that. I would have students think about a time when they bullied someone or was being bullied and how that felt. I would ask them to write a letter talking about it and how they could change what happened. Then, I would have students identify their talents and focus on them by having them out o...more
Bullying is such a current topic in today's schools and overall news. This book addresses that topic in a way that children can be easily taught, while also enjoying the content. Like the main character, Mary Lou, children may realize that they're unique, too. They may have a small voice and buck-teeth like she does and just because that makes them stand out, it doesn't mean they're any less of a person. That's the lesson this book teaches. It's a great read for children going through this probl...more
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Lou is a fun and silly story with a deeper meaning. Molly Lou Lou is different from her friends in every way possible - she has big buck teeth, she is very short, and she has strange hair. Despite the comments from her classmates about her physical appearance, she perseveres after encouragement from her grandmother and becomes successful in school with an abundant amount of friends. This story could be useful for teaching about diversity, acceptance, and perserverance. My f...more

The strength of this Molly Lou Melon shines in this story by Patty Lovell. For all of those who have been made fun of, this book is an inspiration to "stand tall". For those that bully and make fun, this book shares This would be a wonderful read aloud for the first week of school to teach a mini lesson on bullying and self esteem. Molly Lou Melon remembers the words of her grandmother which help her stand strong against her bully. This book will inspire children to stand tall and proud, knowing...more
This book is about a little girl who does not mind having flaws, and as long as she accepts herself, so does the rest of the world. I absolutley love the way this book is written and the awesome pictures. This book can be used for the first day of school and throughout the year to remind students do be themselves. I think this book can be used for 1st through 3rd grade or for any child who needs encouragement to be themselves. One of my favorite quotes in the book is, "believe in yourself and the...more
If I could give this book more than five stars, I would.
We received this book as a gift, and I wasn't too sure about it because the illustrations are not my style. But I was hooked by the first couple of pages. Molly Lou Melon, a short, bullfrog-voiced, buck-toothed dynamo shows kids how to stand up for themselves and love their individuality with humor and grace.
The illustrations are full of hidden gems, the story is short and full of meaning, and kids of all ages will get a kick out of Molly...more

This book is quite remarkable in its ability to tell a story of a young girl who seems to be so strage and how she confidently shows those around her that she is talented and perfect just as she is. This book would be an excellent choice for the first week of school as you encourage studens to make friends, even/ especially with those who may be different from themselves. This book may also be used to confront conflict with teasing or even to set a classroom rule that there is an expectation to...more

Molly Lou Melon embodies everything that every student goes through at some point in time throughout their school career. Sometimes, students will feel awkward and having a character like Molly Lou to relate to is great. This book is immensely positive and inspirational. I would read this book as much as possible just to drive home the idea that being yourself is the best thing one can ever do! The teachable moment that comes from reading/hearing this story is sure to stick with students for a l...more
This is an awesome book about standing up to bullys, being onself and learning about the great things that come from being unique. Molly lou melon has a character traits that are different from the other children and instead of hiding her differences, she stands tall and embraces them. She stands up to bullys and ends up happy and with many friends. when i read this to my first grade class they loved it and i saw how they changed their minds about hiding what they are insecure about.
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon is a terrific read aloud book supporting themes of self esteem, believing in yourself, families, friendship, and dealing with bullies. Molly Lou's grandmother encourages Molly Lou to believe in herself and to appreciate and value the qualities that make Molly Lou the person she is. It is Molly Lou's strong sense of self that helps her to deal with a school bully and to earn the respect of her classmates and the bully too. Wonderful story.

This book is so cute and could be used in so many different ways. This could be a self-esteem building book because Molly lover herself and believes in herself no matter what. This could be a book for teaching about bullying. When Molly has to move people are very nice to her and she has to prove herself to them. This could also be an example of repetition. The author continuously says, "So she did.". This would be a great craft for students to try in their writing.

Oh my goodness, this book is amazing on so many levels. I read this to my students and they loved it. Not only do the students get a good laugh from the illustrations but also they learn a powerful lesson that it is ok to be yourself. Little Molly Lou Melon refuses to let the class bully push her around and just does what she always does. Eventually they become best of friends, thanks to her grandmothers good advice. Leads into writing a letter activity.
