Geared for Pleasure (Elemental Steam #1)

Rachel Grace
The world of Theorrey runs like a well-oiled machine. The elements are in balance, passion is tamed, and the young queen is the heartbeat of it all. But in these two all-new stories of elemental steam, nothing is ever as it seems.

oh, bodice-rippers, the things i have read for you.cowboy porn, medieval porn, twincest porn...
but guess what?? against all odds, i liked this one. like, i 3.5 star liked this one. is that weird? am i finally coming over to the darkside of steampunk loooove books? am i going to be one of the ladies elbowing others out of the way to get my hands on the monthly deliveries of harlequin extras? it could happen. i am greasing my elbows.

I think I'm safe in saying that Rachel Grace is into living the dream!
(EDIT August 31, 2012)
Unfortunately, it wasn't safe to suggest that. The copyright holder of the image, which I had linked to below the image, requested that it be removed. So now you need to click over to her blog to see the image of her in the steampunk corset with the other Smutketeers for the full-on glory of what it means to live the dream. Enjoy!

I think I've figured out my issue with steampunk. I've even said this before about the genre, but I wasn't listening to myself too closely. Steampunk is defined mostly by gadgetry - goggles and steamships and corsets - and that gadgetry generally has this narrow aesthetic band. I'm nerd enough to have gone to my share of sf cons, and I get eye-rolling about how frustratingly similar all the steampunk costumes are - a corset (always with the freaking corset), a top hat (both genders), non-functio...more
Reading this book must be what having schizophrenia feels like.
In a statement: This book is so confusing. Maybe I'm not bright enough? Whatever... But I was constantly scratching my head going: Wait, who's this? How does that work? Hold on, when did they get to this place? How long have they been here?
As a writing style, action first, explanation later works well, but only after one's overly complicated world has had some cursory explanation -- or at least a defined objective. Example: From the...more

Trickery, plain and simple. Between the title and the cover I was prepared for a smutty steampunk erotica. What it is really folks, is a steampunk adventure with an ensemble cast worthy of any epic. There is humor, adventure, new species and peoples. There is love, redemption, mystery and promise for more in the series. I really enjoyed this book. Multiple story lines weave in and out of each other and form a lovely braid. I found the complexity stimulating and rarely confusing. As for...more

“Geared For Pleasure” by Rachel Grace (R.G. Alexander) is a delightful set of linked novellas. “Earthly Desires” introduces Dare (Demeter) who is the Queen’s Chalice known as the Senedal. She is a key member of the elite shield guard of the queen despite her shorter than normal stature and lack of personal ties to anyone other than her queen and her counterpart, Cyrus, the Queen’s Sword known as the Arendal. I love this book so frickin much, I can not even tell you!
As I began the first story: Earthly Desires, I was drawn in by the description of Dare's first experience with the masses. I felt like I was standing right next to her, experiencing for the first time the wonder and chaos of Centre City. Sent on a mission by her beloved queen, and disguised as a boy, she is quickly tricked by a nefarious woman and her goons. When she awakens in captivity, she manages to free herself and is once again on...more

Rachel Grace (also known as R.G. Alexander) intertwines hot, sizzling romance with Steampunk, a popular sub-genre of science fiction that centers around machinery, gears, clockwork and alternate histories. Steampunk's growing popularity can be seen in current fashion, art, and, of course, the publishing field, where stories often meld machinery, fantasy and Victorian sensibilities to create something completely new. Geared for Pleasure consists of two novellas. Each story arc involves the missin...more

So, I don't usually write a review, but I just had to for this book. I like Gail Carriger and I like Meljean Brook, but I love Rachel Grace.
Her world building is so intricate and detailed, the steampunk machines are unexpected and have that flavor of the fantastic that you get with H.G. Wells. Tiny spoiler-stealth airship. Just sayin'. I kept being amazed at the creativity of this world.
Then there's this whole segregated society and political structure, and a serious undergound element that you...more

Quick & Dirty: A steampunk fantasy world fraught with lots of danger and “steamy” love scenes.
Opening Sentence: Dare lifted a hand to her temple and grimaced at the rough and unpleasantly aromatic material of her woven glove.
The Review:
Geared for Pleasure is like a boat rallying against a storm that cannot be denied. From machines never before dreamed of in their world, to the inevitability of passion; each one is a force unto nature that you can either jo...more

So I am not huge into the steampunk world. It’s not that I don’t like it I just haven’t really read any of it yet. Lol I really didn’t have any ideas what this book was about when I started reading it. I’ve been doing this a lot lately and I like it. Since I have no idea of the plot it makes the story more exciting for me. Ms. Grace’s delve into the world of “clockworky steampunkitude” as she calls it was lots of fun. I really enjoyed the world building around Theorr...more

Geared for Pleasure has an interesting delivery, one main story arc divided into two separate but interlocking stories. The story line, characters and world are continuous from one story to the next without pause. However the emphasis on the two different heroes and heroines in each novella shifts without ever losing sight of the main objective – find the Queen. I found it to be like the devices used in the television show Lost where each episode was a continuation of the major story arc but wit...more

Demeter “Dare” Senedal is the Queen Idony of Theorrey’s Chalice. She has stood at the Queens’ side for many years. It has been Dare’s job to protect the Queen and along the way they became great friends. Suspicious things are happening in Theorrey. First, Dare’s counterpart the Queen’s Sword goes missing and now the Queen herself has been taken. The culprits thought they could replace the Queen with an automation but they cannot fool the Queen’s Chalice. Dare will do whatever it...more

A missing Princess, a sheltered warrior, political intrigue, and since it is a romance a sexy hero. Oh and plenty of action!
Geared for Pleasure is split into two stories though the second follows the first without skipping a beat. An interesting way to introduce more characters and bring the story arc to a close. Well as closed as you are going to get, Grace sets us up for the next book with her last couple of pages. Just a nice little tease to leave you hanging.

This is my very first foray into a story with a steampunk theme and I have to admit being a little bit lost in some ways. In Geared For Pleasure we enter into the alternate world of Theorrey where old and new are combined in a very intriguing way. Told in two separate but related stories, we meet Queen Idony’s two shield guards, Dare and Cyrus who are the Queen’s Chalice and Sword; basically her protectors, confidants, companions; her right hands, so to speak. We follow them as they venture out...more
This is a book I read as a judge for a contest.
This is the first truly ‘steampunk’ book I’ve read, and what a wonderful introduction. The inventions were fascinating and believable. The author describes locations and characters that captivate and move the story along at a fast pace.
‘Dare’ is our heroin, searching for the missing Queen. When she leaves the palace to the unfamiliar streets for clues, she is abducted and wakens to find herself on Cyrus Arendal’s brothel ship. Dare has always lived...more

WOW! was my first thought after reading this impressive book by new to me author Rachel Grace (R.G. Alexander). The book is actually divided into two connecting stories, where the first story ends, the second picks up. I’m placing Geared for Pleasure in the fantasy/science fiction category. Some call it Steampunk, but others are not familiar with that term yet. I always love a good fantasy action book and that’s exactly what I...more

I rarely stop mid-book to give thoughts, but I just finished the first half and it was great!! I love imaginative worlds and characters you can really get into and these stories seem to have both - I can't wait to read the second half.
Rich character, colorful world full of action and sizzling with heat, Rachel Grace is the next Kresley Cole!
This two-story book is a mix of magic, alchemy, clockwork, steampunk and romance that caught me from page one, so I guess I'll start by saying I can't wait for the next book! The world was amazingly detailed without being bombarded by a lot of backstory. This book is actually 2 stories which I'll review individually, but let me give you some general basic info. I admit that this might be my first steampunk-ish style book and I might've been a bit skeptical of picking it up, however, I love Jules Verne and having read that the author said some of those elements are in this series, as well as the fact that incorporates erotic elements, then I was anxious to see what came out of that!

First of all, I'd call this erotic steampunk. It starts with the story of a young woman, companion to the queen, on a quest. Things don't go as planned and she receives her sexual awakening. The perspective switches between her and her love interest.
The second half of the book follows her partner and a secondary character from the first half of the book. The adventure continues and there is much more action. While the scenes aren't quite about creating opportunities for sex, there are some unrea...more

I started this book with a set mind that I would give it away to a friend, never to see it again, so that I could make room on my shelves. That is no longer the case, and it has found its own spot on my Keeper Shelf.

While I enjoyed the books, I was hoping for the sexier, steamier romance scenes that I'm used to from RG, but maybe this series is supposed to be less intense in that department, as she's written it under a different name, so she was going for a different flavour? Don't get me wrong, there are still great sex scenes, they were just a bit more subdued compared to some of her other series. I still thoroughly enjoyed the books and it's definitely peaked my curiosity into this whole "steampunk" phen...more
3.5 stars for me.
I kept seeing this book whenever I walked into a store so I finally ILL'd it through work. I thought the writing was fairly strong-ish, but the flow and plot of the book was very convoluted. I'm not sure why Grace made the decision to divide the book into two separate stories instead of combining them into one story, with A & B plot arcs, or separating them completely.
It would have been more interesting for me to see the entirety of Dare's journey, i.e. interacting with the...more
