usually, reading the things we read for this group, i just have the "git-r-done" attitude, as the great philosopher would say. i read them so i can post a humorous review of them, and then i go on to read something that is more to my liking. but this one wasn't bad. i have chosen to read books that were way worse than this.

a lot of my liking of it was the characters. not so much bodhan; he's pretty stock: handsome, chiseled, knows how to give a woman pleasure, but not how to give her... his heart. a brothel-owner who protects the ladies in his employ and does not sully them with his magnificent body and allows them carte blanche to choose which lover will have the privilege of bedding and paying for them. but the ladies are more fun. dare is at once the wide-eyed virgin who has never felt anything stirring in her ladybits, but she is also a badass blue-haired fighter, and when those ladybits begin to stir, she is pretty enthusiastic about it. the other lady is part cat. 'nuff said.

another is the lack of ridiculous sexual euphemisms. manroot, honey-pot, love-stick... a cock by any other name does not smell as sweet. erm... but you know what i mean. this book contained sex-without-evasion. and as little as i am able to become aroused by the written word, i would objectively classify these sex scenes as "hot."

although the hygiene-queen in me revolts at the sex-in-the bath scene that follows dare shed(ding) her grime-covered clothes before lowering herself into its soothing depths. after both of them have been fighting, and traveling, and becoming filthy, the last thing you want is to get all intimate in a tub full of floating leaves and washed-off blood and dirt etc. seriously - none of these novels ever take into account the pain of a UTI, do they?

but, so points for characters, points for straightforward intercourse terminology, and points for being two separate novellas progressing one storyline. that way, we had all the characters involved, but we didn't have to become bored with one POV for 350+ pages. smart move. BUT YOU SHOULD KNOW that the story does not get resolved in this book. so i guess more is forthcoming. and if i were to continue this series, it would be on my own, without the filmy-gauze protection of saying i am reading it for the bodice-rippers group.

I think I've figured out my issue with steampunk. I've even said this before about the genre, but I wasn't listening to myself too closely. Steampunk is defined mostly by gadgetry - goggles and steamships and corsets - and that gadgetry generally has this narrow aesthetic band. I'm nerd enough to have gone to my share of sf cons, and I get eye-rolling about how frustratingly similar all the steampunk costumes are - a corset (always with the freaking corset), a top hat (both genders), non-functio...more I think I've figured out my issue with steampunk. I've even said this before about the genre, but I wasn't listening to myself too closely. Steampunk is defined mostly by gadgetry - goggles and steamships and corsets - and that gadgetry generally has this narrow aesthetic band. I'm nerd enough to have gone to my share of sf cons, and I get eye-rolling about how frustratingly similar all the steampunk costumes are - a corset (always with the freaking corset), a top hat (both genders), non-functional gearworks, maybe some anachronistic wings or those weird fox tails that all the teenagers wear with the weird muppet boots. (What up, teens? I don't get your con boots.) But as much as I get irritated with the uniformity - seriously, why does "creativity" have to be so damned uniform - I get that the operative part of cosplay is play. Playing dress-up doesn't have to make a big statement or blow my mind, and it exists as much for the performer as the audience.

That said, there are always flashes of the truly inventive in costumes I've seen: a woman in a gold Victorian-style dress that was designed to look like a Dalek; various steampunk takes on Stormtroopers; costumes using more working class Victorian sartorial iconography and mixed up with Marxist Freedom Fighter clothes. This last one especially, because so rarely do these steampunk characters hail from anywhere but the most rarefied upper classes, a fetishization of people who were on the whole a bunch of shitty, colonial asshats who enforced the crap out of social and sexual norms that are appalling to the modern person. Or freaking should be. Steampunk decouples the sartorial from the cultural, which in some ways can be wonderfully subversive in its own right, but also can be an act of la-la-la-la nevermind the horrors of the Industrial Revolution pretty dresses wheee!!

The gadgetry of steampunk can be part of a reordering of expectation, or they can just be there to look sweet. Either one is fine, though of course I have my preferences for the former. This is my problem with steampunk: I don't know, often until very late in the game, which kind of book I'm reading. I read with different parts of my brain depending on genre, and it's possible even to argue that genre is a shorthand letting us know what part of the brain to read with. I'm not going to pick up a fantasy book about elves and magic and start nitpicking that magic violates the rules of physics, therefore it's a bad book. Or I could, but I would be lame. I approached Soulless looking for spectacle, which is exactly what I got. But I've fallen into the gap in steampunk's split-personality ethos before with Meljean Brook's Iron Seas series. I read the first one with the part of my brain reserved for romance novels - not the dumb part or anything, just the part that isn't going to nitpick world-building or plausibility - when I would have had a much better time reading with the SFnal part of my brain - the part that gets off on well-constructed alternate histories. Because, damn, she's rocking the alt-history so hard in that series.

Having thought I learned my lesson about judging a book by its steampunk cover, I went into Geared for Steam keeping one eye open for some kind of coherent world or nifty alt-history. The alt-history idea was blown pretty soon, because this is more fantasy on steampunk planet, though there is some ornament about the horror of industrialization and the shittiness of enforced caste systems. The characters are inventive and the gadgets fun, with blue-haired badasses and spotted cat people, stealth airships and submarine brothels. In short, this book looks marvelous. The private guards for the immortal child-empress-like queen determine there is a threat to her, and go out into the world to nullify it. The novel is structured as two linked novellas, taking place one after the other about each of the two guards. The guards both seriously screw up their missions and end up falling in with pirates and pimps, who are also for some reason loyal to the queen. The writing is energetic and not faux-Victorian-purple, the last a serious problem I have with some steampunk novels. The first novella has some really ugly scene transitions, but I suspect this is more to do with bad formatting, though the writing could have been clearer.

However, even with my critical world-building brain mostly off, I have so, so many problems with this world. It's not even so much nit-picking - going after details - as it is a fundamental incoherence in how this society is constructed. I was trying to explain the plot to my husband last night, and started in with bitching about the Queen. I likened her to Queen Amidala, even though their illogic is somewhat different. Queen Amidala is an elected monarch? How the hell does that even work? And why does she seem to have zero political sense and spends most of the movie running around pretending to be someone else? Presumably she's got, like, actual work to do running the planet, even in exile, other than hair-brushing? Anyway, this queen was like that. Everyone loves the crap out of her, see her as fundamental to the order of society, even though society appears to be a rigid kleptocracy that practices eugenics on a broad scale, has enslaved a whole race of cat-people, and is otherwise a total shitshow. All ills in society are blamed on some group called the Theorrean Raj - possibly a Senate or House of Lords? even though they often seem like a secret society? or possibly even just one evil dude who works behind the scenes? - whom everyone despises. Seriously, what the hell is the point of the queen if she can't even run her own society? What is she even doing with her time?

And the principles - the two queen's guards - are members of some racially constructed group, who, and I didn't get this until way into the book, are understood to be an incredibly corrupt police force even though our two protags are all sweet honor-bound bunnies? Throw in a pimp-with-a-heart-of-gold, a piratess airship captain who, while being neat and badass and all, is a total psycho, murdering her crews almost casually. But everyone loves the queen! For no apparent reason! And this explains behavior that is otherwise absolutely confounding on a character level. Which is where my problem lies (lays? whatever; I hate these verbs): it wasn't so much that the world didn't make sense, it's that it made so little sense that I couldn't track why anyone was feeling anything about anything. This was less of a problem in novella one, which is a pretty solid virginal-type-learns-a-valuable-lesson-about-her-vagina tale, but in novella two I was so confused about the romantic leads' cultural situation, societal placement, and what the hell their exact problems were that my emotional investment was pretty well fucked. If I can't figure what's going on, I can't care about the outcome. I couldn't even try to explain what that final reveal was, or what it might mean. No sense, you has it.

So why the three stars, you ask? Some of this is round up, I admit, because this as really just ok for me as a reader. But if I come at this novel with the romance reading part of my brain, there's some interesting stuff going on. Waaaay back in the early days of my romance reading project, I complained about how some novel seemed to walk up to issues of domination and submission within sex writing, only to chicken out completely. (I think the exact scene was one where the heroine drove the hero to ~~fuck~~ make love to her so hard she bruised. And then nothing! No commentary about this desire for the hard fucking in the novel at all. Given Bella Cullen's wedding night bruisings - complete with amnesia! - this seems to be A Thing.) While the set up to the sex-show thing that goes on in novella one is totally dumb and makes no sense, the ways that scene walked around consent and domination and voyeurism were pretty cool. There's even some same-sex interactions that don't seem to run TEH GAY PANIC, and gesture to the ways sex is often mechanically sex, while desire is a whole other issue. Neat.

Novella two's romantical story was hamstrung by my not getting what was going on, but the themes of domination and submission, when I did get it, were handled credibly. Novella two has to do with a sexually promiscuous dominatrix thief cat-person, and I bitchily said somewhere that I expected her to get her spanks, and then love the dude for it. Which kinda happens, but then was more complicated than that. She's having a crisis of conscience, and dude is confronting his own limitations as an alpha dude. I mean, there's a fair amount of waaaaanghst here, but there was a charged push-pull that navigated personal sexual proclivities and personality pretty well. Plus, did I mention that she is a sexually promiscuous dominatrix thief cat-person? Who isn't slut-shamed? Good lord, a star for that alone.

So, anyway, I can't really say I'm going to bother with book two of this series - my problems with the world-building are probably only going to deepen - but I wouldn't be averse to trying out some of Grace's later books, if she writes them. She's got a pretty inventive world here, even if it makes no godmamn sense. (less)

Example: From the very beginning it was understood, thanks to a cursory explanation of Oz from a village of little people, that no matter what weird shit happened to Dorothy, she needed to pick herself up, dust herself off, step back onto that damn yellow brick road and go in search of the Wizard. Tiny people, stupid scarecrows, frightened lions, flying monkeys, water-phobic witches, it all soaked right into the story because, the reader could always return to that yellow brick road.

But there's no Yellow Brick Road in this story. Or a Wizard...(Well, there's one, called the Khephi, but no one's trying to get to him, and we're not sure if he's a bad guy or a good guy in the end.) Anyway... The characters of Geared for Pleasure, i.e. Theorrey, are living day-by-day, each one holding on tightly to their piece of the puzzle. One or two of them may have some objective, that's unclear, BUT they sure as shit aren't going to tell you. Because Ms. Grace's plot is to us what Russia was to Churchill: a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

NOW! Add to that: rushed story lines, time shifts and -- the greatest sin of all -- POV changes that occur mid chapter. (and without the little double carriage returns, mind you.)

AND WELCOME to the land of Theorrey. It's a very, very.....very, complicated little world run by a benevolent ever-young Queen Idony and a host of corrupt nobility called Thoerrean Raj, secured by an army of militant blue-hair beings called the Wode and supplied by an enslaved race of feline humanoids called the Felidae. And that's just scratching the surface.

BUT! This could be pulled together, the makings of a great series are here. I can taste it...I promise, the elements are muddled by horrific writing. But they are there! Also, since this is defined as erotica, I would be remiss in not clapping Ms. Grace on the back for some badass sex scenes. They're hot! They don't really add much in the way of story, in fact a couple were ill placed at best. But it's a nice side diversion to the chore of reading this story.

There are a thousand other sins in this book too. (Mainly that her characters, as likable and complicated as they may be, all suffer from schizophrenia too. What motivates these characters is less defined than the wind.) But I thought I would dismiss critiquing those and cut strait to the tumor that's killing this series - the writing.(less)

Trickery, plain and simple. Between the title and the cover I was prepared for a smutty steampunk erotica. What it is really folks, is a steampunk adventure with an ensemble cast worthy of any epic. There is humor, adventure, new species and peoples. There is love, redemption, mystery and promise for more in the series. I really enjoyed this book. “Geared For Pleasure” by Rachel Grace (R.G. Alexander) is a delightful set of linked novellas. “Earthly Desires” introduces Dare (Demeter) who is the Queen’s Chalice known as the Senedal. An assignment from her monarch causes her to embark on a fantastical adventure that will utilize her hidden ability to sense the true emotions of those around her while introducing her to an amazing array of individuals.

Bodhan is not quite sure what to make of the feisty female whose indigo eyes and hair proclaims her as one of the elite and despised Wode but whose stature reflects her half-breed status. His ship, the Siren, is a unique brothel that is able to travel under the water and is populated with intriguing females who provide pleasure for the right price but Dare doesn’t want to join their ranks. A remarkable Felid named Seraphina becomes a questionable ally as Dare tries to cope with her intense and unexpected attraction to the charismatic Bodhan even as she strives to complete her mission to find the ship Defiant and complete the mission for her queen.

The fascinating saga continues with the novella “Fiery Temptations” and highlights Seraphina, plus Dare’s missing counterpart, Cyrus, as well as the mysterious Captain Nerida Amaranthe and a remarkable airship. There are more magical mechanical marvels revealed as a mysterious individual named Khepri continues to guide the disparate individuals who have a common goal of aiding Queen Idony. Seraphina and Cyrus have a tortuous past which includes a searingly carnal relationship which ended badly but must find a way to work together to fulfill their respective commissions. Their passion for their quests is more than equaled by their passion for each other but circumstances may prevent them from ever reaching a comfortable relationship.

This was a wonderfully entertaining read combining the magical marvels of steampunk with the author’s facility for penning wonderfully spicy scenes. The heat is a little milder than readers are used to with this author but this is more than compensated for by the sweeps of imagination that are displayed in this intriguing tale. The scenes are described vividly with such great imagery that one can visualize the intriguing world of gears and magic. The tension between the primary couples in each novella is a believable counterpoint to the overall quest and a nice blend of romance and sensuality. The villains are a bit two-dimensional but that is probably because they are still primarily shadowy figures at this point. A great start to the series, can’t wait for the sequel.

As I began the first story: Earthly Desires, I was drawn in by the description of Dare's first experience with the masses. I felt like I was standing right next to her, experiencing for the first time the wonder and chaos of Centre City. Sent on a mission by her beloved queen, and disguised as a boy, she is quickly tricked by a nefarious woman and her goons. When she awakens in captivity, she manages to free herself and is once again on the move lead only by a mysterious mechanical bug. The journey that follows is full of rich descriptions and exciting adventure. As Dare attempts to fullfill her quest she is torn between wonder and confusion as she tries to reconcile the technology that she encounters with the fact that no one, save the palace, should possess it. And she struggles with feelings for the mysterious Captain Bodhan, whom she is sure is working towards a nefarious purpose.

Not just an adventure, this story is the ultimate love story. Two people destined to be together, before they even meet. Their love is passionate and true.

In the second story: Fiery Temptations, we finally get to learn more about Seraphina. We meet Phina in the first story and I was intrigued by her character. I was happy that we would learn more about her and Cyrus, who was also introduced in the first story. Unlike Dare and Bodhan, Cyrus and Phina have a history. One that makes their relationship fraught with misunderstandings and outright lies. There are huge hurdles to over come. Phina was complicit in the abduction of Cyrus, never realizing he would be drugged and tortured. They have strong feelings for each other but there is much to get past. Again this is all set against a rich backdrop of creatures both mechanical and alive, and the drama of the disappearance of the Queen.

Both stories are filled with passion and adventures that are a feast for the senses. When I finished the book I felt as though I had been on a grand journey! I am excited to read more about the wonderful and exotic world of Theorrey. Rachel Grace has captivated me with the best Steampunk novel I have ever read!

I give this book my most enthusiastic 5 stars. (If I could give it more stars I would) And it goes on my Keeper Shelf! It will definitely be one of my favorite books to pull out again and again each time I need to escape from reality and enter another world.(less)

Earthly Desires is about Dare, the Queen's Chalice (her protector) and closest friend. When Queen Idony goes missing, Dare takes it upon herself to find her beloved Queen and companion. Unfortunately, because Dare isn't used to the outside world, she finds out just how difficult life can be for someone who is so sheltered.

She is tricked, tied up and mysteriously led by a mechanical bug to freedom. Bodhan (our dashing and very hot hero) is the captain of a mechanical underwater vessel called the Siren. When he meets Dare, he feels compelled to protect her … and perhaps take her to bed.
These two scorched up the pages. I don't think it was "love" between them, but their chemistry and heat were undeniable. Bodhan is the perfect dashing, "tall, dark and handsome" hero who knows his way in and out of a woman's bed. Dare is spirited and, as I followed her adventures, I found myself rooting for her to find not only her Queen, but also a partner.

Fiery Temptations is about Phina and Cyrus (both of whom we meet in Earthly Desires). Unlike Bodhan and Dare, these two have a history, which gives the story (and their romance) a certain depth. What I found interesting was that their past was not all good — turns out Phina is partly responsible for Cyrus (the Queen's Sword) getting captured and tortured. Now, with Cyrus' sacred dagger lost and Phina moved by his suffering, Phina and Cyrus need each other, but can they really set aside the past and everything between them?

The bedroom scenes between these two are reflected in the novella's title. They were fiery and they were scorching … sometimes at the most inopportune times! Like when they're hiding in a closet, and suddenly the heat rises and … well, you get the picture.

The two novellas are sexy romances at heart, so the plot is mainly used to push the main characters together. Rachel Grace has a good thing going with the Elemental Steam series. I can envision a full-length Theorrey novel with real world building and even more Steampunk aspects. If Grace plans on releasing more, I would definitely give this series a try, especially if you adore pleasure, passion, and Steampunk mechanical creatures!

So, I don't usually write a review, but I just had to for this book. I like Gail Carriger and I like Meljean Brook, but I love Rachel Grace.

Her world building is so intricate and detailed, the steampunk machines are unexpected and have that flavor of the fantastic that you get with H.G. Wells. Tiny spoiler-stealth airship. Just sayin'. I kept being amazed at the creativity of this world.

So I am not huge into the steampunk world. It’s not that I don’t like it I just haven’t really read any of it yet. Lol I really didn’t have any ideas what this book was about when I started reading it. I’ve been doing this a lot lately and I like it. Since I have no idea of the plot it makes the story more exciting for me. Ms. Grace’s delve into the world of “clockworky steampunkitude” as she calls it was lots of fun. I really enjoyed the world building around Theorrey. She even has a map on her website to help you visualize if you are so inclined. I also liked that this book is broken into two separate stories. I love when authors do that. I get to get closer to the characters that way.

First up in Earthly Desires is Dare and Bodhan. As the Queen’s Challace Dare is tasked with hunting her down when she goes missing. Bodhan own an underwater brothel (cool huh?). Dare wakes up to find herself on Bodhan’s ship and doesn’t know who to trust. The sparks fly between the two of them but Dare is innocent in more ways than one. The tension between these two was ridiculous. I loved seeing all the things through Dare’s eyes. Her life in the palace prevented her from knowing the vast array of technology in the world. I can’t say much more without giving away plot points but this is a hot sweet story that leads nicely into the next story.

In Fiery Temptations we learn more about Seraphina AKA Phina and Cyrus. Cyrus is the Queen’s Sword and was betrayed by Phina early on. This one made me cry, laugh, smile, and laugh some more. Ms. Grace did an amazing job portraying the emotion between these characters. I cannot wait for the next in the series so we can read about Captain Amaranthe (I think her story will be my favorite) and Aurora Steele.

One of my favorite things about this world is that the women were based on some of Rachel Grace’s friends. Aurora Steel is Crystal Jordan, Seraphina Felidae is Feisty, Captain Amaranthe is Eden Bradley/Eve Berlin, and Dare Senedal is Ms Rachel Grace AKA RG Alexander herself. It was fun seeing the authors come to life in a new and different way. Great way to start a series and new name for Ms. Grace!

I found Dare to be a strong and compelling character that I eagerly followed her journey. Bodhan, the man may be made for sin, but it is his heroic nature and protective qualities that will make you fall in love with him. This couple is electric and their desire rages as they begin a beautiful seduction in “Earthly Desires.”

“Fiery Temptations”

Seraphina is a Felidae. Her race is degraded among the Theorrey hierarchy and they are regulated to the mines. Seraphina however is unique among her kind. She is known as Phina Fleet for her ability to seduce, steal and get out of the worst situations unscathed. Seraphina is also most loyal to Queen Idony. When Seraphina realizes she has done a grave injustice to one the Queen holds dear, she is conflicted. Although her confliction has as much to do with the harm she caused, as the unwanted feelings the victim stimulates.

Cyrus is the Queen’s Sword, his mission was clear until he was seduced by the tempting Phina Fleet. His weakness for the stunning Felidae cost him more than his mission. Yet the past must be set aside, for now he needs the beautiful Phina’s help if he is to retrieve his sacred dagger and find his Queen. Phina and Cyrus battle more than their enemies, they also battle their desire for each other. Will they be victorious at fighting off their feelings or submit to their every desire?

“Fiery Temptations” is one hot-blooded novella embedded in an out of this world story! Phina and Cyrus’ story is filled with heartache and danger. I could feel the sexual tension dripping off of these characters. The pain is clear as they fight off the feelings burning them alive. The drama is high as Phina and Cyrus battle each other in the midst of their enemies. “Fiery Temptations” lives up to its name! This is one temptation you don’t want to miss!

Rachel Grace’s Geared For Pleasure is a steampunk fantasy dream come true. I must admit Steampunk has not been my favorite genre, but evidently I was reading the wrong books because Ms. Grace has won me over! As I turned the pages of Geared For Pleasure I was immediately gripped by the intense and ingenious world of Theorrey. Ms. Grace has started her Elemental Steam series off with a sensuous feast of a story brimming with captivating characters. The mystery surrounding the Queen’s disappearance is only one of the many intriguing secrets waiting to be revealed in this enchanting novel. The startling and awe-inspiring machines that make up this steampunk world are mystifying and had me giddy with excitement. Ms. Grace does an excellent job of painting a brilliant picture of her world for the reader. I would love to see Geared For Pleasure come to life on the silver screen. I can see this vivid world so clearly and all of the characters in it. I am dying to figure out what will happen next in this alluring series. I can’t wait to find out which characters will succumb to their passionate desires. Geared For Pleasure is a sinfully delicious steampunk treat that is certain to become your next addiction.

Geared for Pleasure is split into two stories though the second follows the first without skipping a beat. An interesting way to introduce more characters and bring the story arc to a close. Earthly Desires

When Queen Idony goes missing Dare receives a somewhat cryptic message that tasks her to leave the security and comfort of Queen’s Hill to seek out a ship called the Deviant. Unfortunately, her very sheltered life on Queen’s Hill did not adequately prepare her for the world outside. She’s in awe of what she sees and as she’s taking it all in, she’s attacked, injected with a sedative and taken. When she awakens she finds herself on the Siren, a brothel of sorts-but all is not as it really seems. This is where she meets Bodhan, the Siren’s captain, who is very intrigued by the petite blue-haired beauty. As Dare gets to know Bodhan and the secrets of the Siren she realizes that he may be her only hope in her quest for locating the Deviant and fulfilling her mission to find the Queen.

Fiery Temptations

Cyrus has been sent on many missions by the Queen over the years since he became the Queen’s Sword and he’s done them without question and always successfully. Until he’s sent to meet someone aboard the Siren to deliver a very important package, that is. While there he meets the fiery beauty, Seraphina, who is much, much more than she appears. Seraphina is Felidae and when she turns on the charm, no man can resist her, Cyrus included. In order to pay off a debt, she agrees to drug Cyrus so that the man she owes can retrieve something in Cyrus’s possession. But when Cyrus is kidnapped, Seraphina unwittingly becomes another player in the hunt for the kidnapped Queen Idony.

The first story starts out a bit slow and having not read a “steampunk” themed book before, I was a bit confused. It’s clear that this is an alternate world. It felt old with its descriptions of open markets, the clothing and people walking everywhere. At the same time, I was utterly fascinated with the very unique mechanized robotic bugs upon which Dare receives the message that sends her away from Queen’s Hill and lands her aboard the Siren. Additionally, there is a submarine type ship and a flying ship which I imagined to be kind of like a blimp but with sails-all things that are well known today, but are truly fascinating, though seemingly out of place as they are described herein in this world’s context. I found myself pulled into the world and I wanted more descriptions of these fantastical things.

Once we move into Fiery Temptations, we’ve added quite a bit of characters to the mix as they try to decipher the clues to Queen Idony’s disappearance. They are all really interesting and bring much to the story. Things really pick up here as we get a lot of information and learn some secrets. There is action, adventure and a continued sense that if they would just look close enough, all would be revealed. I was really pulled in to the storytelling here. Ms. Grace does a great job and her writing is very descriptive.

The one thing that didn’t sit well with me has to do with the some of the sex scenes. Yes, this is an erotic romance, but the sex should fit in. With Dare, I felt her jumping into bed so quickly and easily with Bodhan a bit unrealistic for a character who is depicted as sheltered and untouched. And there is a scene in Cyrus’s book where he and Seraphina are hiding in a closet and they start going at it. This one, especially, seemed unnecessary and gratuitous. In the case of Dare and Bodhan, other than their rush to sex their relationship as a whole was very believable. With Cyrus and Seraphina a previous encounter is inferred so when they get together so quickly after they are reunited it’s not as unlikely or unexpected.

The last 1/3 of Cyrus’s book is probably the best of the whole book and was really where I finally felt like I had a clue and understood what was happening. A lot of questions are answered and we get hints of possible storylines to come. Some of the secrets revealed, though, actually prompt more questions which totally frustrated me, but in a good way. The author leaves us teetering on the verge of satisfaction, but not quite getting there which I guess in some ways is appropriate for an erotic romance. She definitely left me wanting more. I’m not sure this was the best book for me to venture into the “steampunk” genre, but I really am quite intrigued now with this alternate reality with its old world feel coupled with new world inventions. This entry is really just a teaser and I look forward to seeing where the author plans to take us.

This is the first truly ‘steampunk’ book I’ve read, and what a wonderful introduction. The inventions were fascinating and believable. The author describes locations and characters that captivate and move the story along at a fast pace.

WOW! was my first thought after reading this impressive book by new to me author Rachel Grace (R.G. Alexander). The book is actually divided into two connecting stories, where the first story ends, the second picks up. I’m placing Geared for Pleasure in the fantasy/science fiction category. Some call it Steampunk, but others are not familiar with that term yet. I always love a good fantasy action book and that’s exactly what I got with this one and the added erotic romance was an added bonus. The author paints a gloriously vivid picture of the world of Theorrey and I quickly became enthralled with this world and intrigued with the fascinating cast of characters.

In the first story, Earthly Desires, we meet Dare, the missing Queen’s chalice and close friend, and Bodhan the captain of the underwater vessel, the Siren. The captain has many colorful people aboard his ship which we learn enough about to keep us guessing. The story begins with Dare leaving her post because someone has kidnapped the Queen and it is her job to find her and bring her back safe. She ends up on the Siren with the most handsome captain who is just as leery of her as she is of him. I felt sorry for Dare throughout the story because everything she believed true in her life ends up being something different and she seems somewhat lost. And although the captain presents himself rather illusive, once he begins to have feelings for her, he stops at nothing to assist with her mission. Their love affair is seductive, sexy, and filled with passion. Bodhan is one of those characters with commanding presence. The man makes my toes curl.

So, now that we know all about Theorrey- the secrets, lies, deceitful, and traitorous behavior, we pick up right where we left off. Only this story centers around Cyrus, the Queen’s Sword and Phina, a dangerously seductive woman who can charm the pants off of any man in order to steel from him. Phina goes from a supporting role in the first story to front and center in the 2nd. Cyrus worked with Dare in the castle but was betrayed and kidnapped only to find his way back to the Deviant, the air ship used to further the mission this go around. Phina is a complex and highly sexual creature who never thought she could have happiness and true love. She is a hard one to break, but Cyrus is the man up for the task, which makes him perfect for her. I love them together because even though they found their HEA, it will NEVER be boring. They will each keep the other one on their toes. Their crusade is packed full of action, steamy sex, and even more interesting characters are brought into the mix.

The author did a wonderful job with the character development and world building and I couldn’t be more excited to read the next book of stories in the series. No matter if they are small or large, cliff hangers are just wrong, so I’ll need the next release to hurry and get here.

Buckle your seatbelts and get ready for an action packed and erotic adventure that will leave you wanting more from the world of Theorrey.

I started this book with a set mind that I would give it away to a friend, never to see it again, so that I could make room on my shelves. That is no longer the case, and it has found its own spot on my Keeper Shelf.

While I enjoyed the books, I was hoping for the sexier, steamier romance scenes that I'm used to from RG, but maybe this series is supposed to be less intense in that department, as she's written it under a different name, so she was going for a different flavour? Don't get me wrong, there are still great sex scenes, they were just a bit more subdued compared to some of her other series. I kept seeing this book whenever I walked into a store so I finally ILL'd it through work. I thought the writing was fairly strong-ish, but the flow and plot of the book was very convoluted. I'm not sure why Grace made the decision to divide the book into two separate stories instead of combining them into one story, with A & B plot arcs, or separating them completely.

When I received the book Geared for Pleasure by Rachel Grace to review for Literal Addiction I was cautiously excited. I had tried to read another “steampunk” book before and had problems with the amount of focus that was put on the mechanical descriptions and world building. So having read and loved many of Rachel Grace’s books written as R.G. Alexander I jumped in and put aside my worries and ended up fascinated by it. I stayed up most of the night reading and came to the conclusion that Rachel Grace has started a new genre of books called “ Steamsmut” and I am excited to know where is goes from here. Geared for Pleasure is set up similar to Possess Me her 1st Bone Daddy book. It has 2 stories with 2 separate Heroes & Heroines but with a continuous storyline. I loved that the transition between the stories is seamless but you still have a different feeling to it.
The 1st story is Earthly Desires. We meet Dare and I found out pretty quickly that this wasn’t a normal “steampunk” book. The world building was so seamless that you didn’t even notice it. I felt like I was right there with Dare while she is amazed by the world around her. Dare is a sheltered young woman and The Queen’s Chalice. She also has an empathic gift that has been hidden from all except the Queen and her Sword Cyrus who is like a brother to Dare. She was raised to be the Queens Chalise, her companion and protector but she also became her close friend. Being an empath she knew instantly that there was something wrong when an automation was being passed off as her Queen.and knows what others are feeling. She believes she is prepared for the mission she is given by her Queen. Cyrus has been missing for months and now the Queen is gone and replaced with an automation. It is up to Dare to find the ship The Deviant and enlist the captain’s help to find Queen Idony. She is told to trust no one but the captain of the Deviant. When she is kidnapped and then saved by Bodhan the captain of The Siren she is tempted to trust not only her mission, but her heart and body to him too.
Bodhan is the captain of the underwater ship The Siren. He is protective of the women who work on his ship selling pleasure. So when Dare falls into his lap and he realizes what has happened to her keeping her safe becomes his priority. While on their epic journey Bodhan shows Dare what “Earthly Desires” are all about.
The 2nd story is Fiery Temptations and it is about Cyrus the Queens Sword and Seraphina a Felidae woman that is also working aboard the Siren. Since by this point in the book you have met a large part of the cast of characters I thought it might slow down a bit but it didn’t. You are thrust into the adventure as we learn more and more about Theorrey. The story was even hotter than the first, but it didn’t lack for emotion either. Phina is a spitfire, one of those characters that just burns up the page and leaves you pissed and excited all at the same time. Reading as she and Cyrus try to find their HEA while also trying to figure out what to do to find the Queen had me up most of the night. At one point I wasn’t sure that it would be possible. Phina interaction with her family was a side of her that I hadn’t expected and I shed a few tears while reading it. As Phina and Cyrus’s story comes to an end and they get their version of “ Happily Ever After” the main story has a long way to go it seems before the journey ends.
Rachel Grace has created a world that I would love to spend a whole lot more time in. I am so glad that the story has so much more to tell and I know it will end up being a Epic Adventure in Steamsmut! I am looking forward to finding out what happens with all the people we met. I gave this book 4&1/2 star and will be awaiting the continuation of this awesome story.
