Riley Poe is having all sorts of problems this time out. She's been kidnapped by Victorian who wants to run away with her to Romania and make her his forever. She's been losing track of time, she's having hallucinations, she see's herself actually killing and drinking blood from humans, and her superhuman powers may be causing more problems than they're worth.

Her brother Seth, and best Friend Nyx, are scary worried about Riley but can't do anything to prevent the inevitable from happening; a dual venomed quickening into a vampire. She also has to deal with a pair of vampires, Eli, and Victorian, who want her for themselves and won't back down an inch to let her breathe. Of course, we can't forget the most dangerous vampire of them all; Valerian who has a major agenda that includes Riley. Ah, but least we forget the most powerful Arcos around; Julian who wants Riley to be his queen thanks to her new found powers.

So, this book ends up being a transitional novel and the likely an end to Riley Poe as a tattoo artist. For three books all we've heard about is how awesome of a tattoo artist Riley is. Now, she is forced to walk away from her life's work because of the events of the previous three books.

The whole thing with Riley transitioning into something more than human, but not vampire, sounds like a human-vampire hybrid to me. The ending with Valerian was rushed, and took absolutely no time whatsoever to finalize. Seriously what was the point? What was the point of Riley finding out the truth behind her own mothers death just so she could look on as Valerian is allowed to leave?

Most interesting line of the book:

"My blades press tightly against my skin at his weight. Everything he does, I realize, proves his love for me. Proves his possessiveness for me. And I can’t even return the verbal sentiment? Worse yet, his overprotectiveness is starting to really grate on my nerves. God, I’m such a bitch. A messed up one at that. Damaged goods to the nth degree." Riley Poe pg 63

The new cast of characters Jake Andorra, Darius, Gabriel, Sydney Maspeth, and Ginger Slater are all part of the WUP. You now have a group of vampires, werewolves, and immortals working together for the WUP - Worldwide Unexplained Phenomena in order to stop Black Fallen Angels and a werewolf war. You even have the will you marry me aspect that should have come at the END of the series, and not after this book.

So, again, this story ends up being a bridge from the first three stories of this series, to the new Riley Poe series where she, Eli and Seth will be working for the WUP while Riley learns all about her new abilities including the ability to see a persons past, and mind manipulation.

At this point, I am not sure it would be worth my time to read the next book in the series. However, December is a long way away and things do change over the course of 8 months.

Perhaps because of the line-spacing her thoughts feel less dense than they should. I should specify this book is written in a hard first-person and only gets out of it through the previously mentioned tricks i.e. italics in which Riley may or may not be in her body and epigraphs in which some other character is providing a paragraph of his or her thoughts.

As a novel I am not sure it entirely works. To Spark Notes the events that led up to these, events that keep in mind I had to sort through all fresh having not read book one or two (again, I know, so sorry), Riley must deal here with vampiric urges overtaking her. Thus much of the struggle stems from Riley's psyche as she comes to grips, and fails to often, with what exactly she is.

Time skips frequently as Eventide plays up the unreliable narrator to an extreme. Where this whole unreliable narrator thing falls short, however, is in just how much Riley's friends still adore her, for if you are going to have a narrator that maybe is not in full control of her thoughts or feelings, there should be more "Oh my gosh you're chewing on Rick, I'm not sure if you should be allowed in this household".

Basically no matter how out-of-control Riley might have become there is never any question that she will not do anything that will not make her a hero and if she did do anything evil the book leaves enough gaps that it is still up for discussion when it is over. You really cannot complain too much either way because the book flies by at such a fast clip.

Did I mention her friends, admittedly hard to keep track of since yet again I am coming in late, range from thin as cardboard to egg cartons, the egg cartons being her two lovers, Eli and Victorian who actually get to have scenes with Riley that last more than a page and involve some scenery?(less)

The overall storyline in Eventide is good. Riley is slowly turning evil, Valerian's blood is affecting her and continuing to change her. However, I felt that the execution and evolution of the story was lacking. The story felt disjointed. Early on, I was wondering why Riley wouldn't admit she was having troubles. Also, despite being constantly watched, no one stepped in to help Riley. Everyone expressed their concerns about her state, but no one did ANYTHING to change it. It didn't make sense to me. Eli is professed to be so overprotective, but then he doesn't do anything but watch over Riley.

When it is finally time to step in and help Riley, Eli and his family must seek help from Victorian's father, so they travel to Romania. This is about where the story takes a leap in a whole different direction. New characters are introduced, and a whole new plot line is started. The timing seemed very odd, and it didn't fit the story. One minute, the plot was on Riley changing, and the new consequences of keeping her sane and human, and the next, a supernatural police group is randomly involved. This felt very off to me, and the abrupt change in the story didn't sit well, the new character's side stories felt drawn out, and they took away from the focus of the book.

Riley's relationship with Eli was also fairly frustrating to me. One minute, Riley is absolutely in love with Eli, and the next she is so angry that he's overprotective and overbearing. The on and off, back and forth gets old. Eli is who he is, and we get it, Riley likes to be the tough girl. It doesn't need to constantly be expressed.

By the end, Riley has even more vampiric changes to deal with, and her future is going a whole new direction. The story came together pretty good in the end, and future story lines are set up. I will say this for Eventide, the action and powers are intriguing and diverse. The series is about to change, and go in a new direction, which holds promise. However, I am not sure if I will continue with the series, there is a lot of repetition about Riley being tough, Eli being overbearing, and Victorian pining over Riley. After 3 books in the series, I am fairly invested in the characters, but book 4 will not be on priority to-read list.

EVENTIDE, book three of THE DARK INK CHRONICLES, continues where EVERDARK, book two, left us anxiously waiting for what happens next in this addictive series. I can’t tell you about EVENTIDE without spoiling part of AFTERLIGHT or EVERDARK, so I suggest that you read both of those books before reading my review below. If you want to know more about book one or book two, follow the links to my reviews.

Trying to review a series like this and do it justice is a reviewer’s hardest task. Not to mention the fact that it’s impossible not to spoil something in the process, even if you do your best to stick to the beginning of the book. I can’t imagine any paranormal or horror fan not loving this series. It’s sick…in an awesome way. In EVENTIDE, evil personified not only continues, but deviates into the mind, twisting everything you thought you knew into a journey you must travel, knowing that it might just freak you out in the process. You can taste it, feel it and can’t help but become immersed within it. If your dreams are easily influenced, read this book during the day or suffer the consequences. It’s so real that you’ll be looking over your shoulder on dark, dreary days.

EVENTIDE begins with tattoo artist Riley Poe being captured by Victorian Arcos, a Romanian strigoi vampire, without the protection of her French vampire lover, Eli Dupré, and his family. Victorian has mind control over Riley and she cannot resist him, even if she could control her physical body, which she cannot while under his power. They’ve left the carnage at the Tunnel 9 Club, but the memories still haunt Riley while she tries to find a way to escape Victorian. Everyone she knows and loves are still fighting rogue vampires at Tunnel 9, which bothers her more than being kidnapped by Victorian. She knows he won’t harm her, that his actions are simply to protect her, but she will not go with him willingly without a fight. Riley is human with extraordinary tendencies, thanks to Victorian and his brother Valerian, who bit her and infused their strigoi vampire DNA with her own special blood. But even those tendencies are no match for Victorian’s mind control at first, but Riley is morphing, changing into something that even Victorian can’t predict or have power over.

Of course, Eli and his family don’t give up until they find Riley and rescue her from Victorian. It takes all of Riley’s persuasion to keep Eli from killing Victorian. What none of them understand is that Victorian knows some of what’s next for Riley Poe and they’re going to need him eventually. He assures them all of this fact, but they’re sure they will be able to help Riley with whatever she faces. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s going to take more than Victorian or Eli, or Gullah magic from her surrogate grandparents, to help Riley avoid the evil that’s in her future, including more inner strength than Riley even knows she has. Riley begins to experience just a fraction of that evil in her dreams and in true Riley fashion, enabled by the strength she’s gaining as she morphs, assumes she’ll be able to control her own destiny, even if it scares her. Riley is about to experience more than she could ever imagine while learning the truth about the past and present in Romania.

Will Riley and Eli’s love for one another be enough to combat the war raging inside Riley, or will the evil win against those who are born to eliminate it?

For those who have been following this series as anxiously as I have, all the characters you’ve loved from previous books are back. Some are more predominate than others, but you’ll feel the magic of the Gullah, the love and strength of Riley’s brother and her best friend, the mystery of the vampiric society, as well as the seductive aura of Savannah’s streets. But that’s not all, which is the fun part, and I can’t wait to hear what you think of what happens next! So seductive and engrossing!

Expect to inhale EVENTIDE like nectar while savoring it like fine wine because this rollercoaster ride surpasses the first two books. THE DARK INK CHRONCLES series should be in every paranormal booklover’s collection…if not for its uniqueness, then for its ability to completely mesmerize the reader. Elle Jasper engages your senses with anticipation, revelation and an expediency of awe while gorging yourself within her world until each book is deliciously devoured. EVENTIDE is all that and more. If you thought AFTERLIGHT and EVERDARK were enthralling, then EVENTIDE will blow your mind. Reading this series isn’t just an option, it’s essential if you love books that draw you to them like a moth to a flame. Oh, and let’s not forget about the erotic heartbeat threaded beautifully throughout the adventure. What’s not to love? Like an addict, I’m salivating for what has become my obsession, and I can’t wait for book four to keep me up all night. Again.

I had a very hard time while reading this book and I honestly believe it’s because I’ve never read the series before and I was missing so much information that had happened in the previous two books. I really loved Riley and looking back on it I really wished that I would have caught myself up with the series before starting Eventide because it’s a great book I was was just spent the whole thing trying to catch up. This is definitely not a stand alone but I would recommend the series.

Riley is going through a very hard time in Eventide and a lot of the book is flashbacks or dreams. I honestly didn’t know if these were real or what was going on and again I was very confused. All of a sudden I felt the book took a very drastic twist and completely changed it’s direction. It happened so fast I thought I had skipped some chapters and keep going back and trying to figure out what happened. I really liked all the characters but since it’s a little far in the series you are expected to already know them and all the relationships (there are a lot) that are going on.

I found the set up for the next book interesting and I am going to try to give the series another chance. I hope that there is more of a back story with all of the new characters and I’m wondering of Mrs. Jasper isn’t going to take a page out of the Jeaniene Frost handbook and start a side series of friends of Riley and Eli. Again this is a great book but you need to read the series in order or you will as confused as I was and unable to really enjoy the world of Riley Poe. (less)

I’m done. I can’t take it anymore. The first book in this series was great and had enormous potential. But now with each new book the series is completely going downhill. Riley is no longer the character that I loved in book one. I can’t tell you how long I have waited for this book…but it seems like an eternity. Eventide is the third book in Elle Jasper’s Dark Ink Chronicles following Riley, a tattoo artist who isn’t quite human anymore and her fight against a vampire hell-bent on her destruction. Each book in this series gets better and better and I expected a lot going into this one and Elle Jasper seriously delivered by giving her readers one fun ride with the promise of more to come.
At the end of the second book, Everdark, Riley was being kidnapped by Victorian, who claims to be doing it for her own good. Talk about a cliff hanger huh? Victorian is constantly at odds with Riley’s vampire boyfriend Eli and Eli’s family. Victorian comes from an extremely powerful vampire family and with his venom as well has his crazy brother Valerian’s vemon now inside Riley he feels he should be able to claim her as his own. Only problem is that with so much powerful vamp venom in her Riley is acquiring tendencies that are not merely human but not quite vampire. Slowly she is becoming a blood sucker against her will and Valerian’s power over her seems to be increasing. She is suffering from time loss as well her vision that she can’t be sure if they are real or just a figment of her fragmented brain. I envied her ability to stay sane as long as possible. Riley is one tough cookie.
On a last ditch effort to cleanse her blood of Valerian’s evil toxins Eli lets Victorian’s dad inject his venom to overpower that of Valerian. What results is a quirky triangle in which Riley loves Eli, Victorian pines for her and Victorian father offers her the throne. The love triangle was a bit expected given the direction of this book, but still I found it hot. I am curious to find out if Riley feels a connection to Victorian simply because of his venom running through her veins or if its…deeper. Throw in a new group of HOT warriors that need Riley’s help to overcome their own enemies and you’ve got a well rounded book with the possibility of more heart pounding stories to come. The world building throughout the series continues to grow and with the addition of the new characters becoming even more shadowy than before. Nix is back of course with her perky, loving attitude which I have always adored. I hope we continue to see more of her in the following books even though it sounds like Riley may be hanging up her tattoo gun for bigger and definitely more dangerous things.
I have always enjoyed Eli’s band of family even though they sound a whole lot like the Cullens to me. Nevertheless, everyone needs a family and so I suppose after the huge success of Twilight any other vampire family would probably sound the same. Together they move like a team, completely in sync and the camaraderie is well done. Each has their own personality but I like how the story stays true to Eli and Riley and what they face with the family just acting like supporting characters. Like previous books the heat level between Eli and Riley was scorching. I absolutely love Eli. Dark and protective? SWOON.
Don’t start with this one, go back and read Afterlight first and then Everdark. You need to appreciate the way the world and author alike are growing. Plus you won’t fully understand this series without first reading the previous books. Eventide is a great addition to a series I continue to love and I simply can’t wait for the next book!

I give Eventide by Elle Jasper 5 stars!

Victorian is not like his brother, he knows Riley is changing because of too much blood of his evil brother, so he wants to help her. He tries, and Eli comes all tough and thinking he's saving Riley from Victorian, when all along he's dragging her away from the help she needs. Things start to happen to Riley, like she gets a weird craving for blood, has weird dreams about drinking blood.and one of her dreams that she had, it came true! She killed a taxi driver.
Eli and others are worried about Riley, as if she's a whole different person in the outside AND inside now. She's paler, and has this aura around her that makes her seem...predatory?
Later on Riley goes through 2 stages of Rocos and Durpre quickening. Riley was out of control, so eli and everyone else took her to victorian's father to help her, which he did.
You also meet people like Lucian and Ginger-who are both werewolf and want to ask her for help as a new addition to their team.
What I thought is creepy in this book, is when Jules-Victorian's father- has a private talk with Riley and offers her position to be queen with either Him or Victorian if she tires her life one day...thank goodness she said no.
Valerian now desires Riley, for her new added powers, her unique self. Her.
In the end Valerian is captured, and taken away, and Eli proposes to Riley!#55(less)

I loved AFTERLIGHT and was not so into EVERDARK but EVENTIDE got me a little more excited about the future of the Dark Ink Chronicles series.

EVERDARK ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and EVENTIDE picks up exactly where it left off. I have always liked Riley. She is funky, is comfortable in her own skin and loves and protects those close to her. I really tried to read this slowly, I wanted to make it last, savor it. But instead I found myself devouring it. I couldn't stop thinking about Riley, Eli, Vic and the whole damn cast of awesome characters.
There's so much that can't be said without ruining the experience for everyone else.
In this book we are introduced to more vamps, werewolves and immortal beings. I hope that means that the series will continue instead of this being the last book in the series.

The author has developed likable characters and has some great ideas but there is something about the execution of those ideas that fall a bit flat for me. The action takes forever to happen and when it finally does is over in a few pages...very anti-climatic!

She can take care of herself, handle all of her issues, and kick anyone's a$$.....

.....And this is the reason why the Dark Ink Chronicles series will most likely never get a 5 star rating from me. Riley's incessant belief that she can take care of herself when she's been proven wrong time-and-time again, is a huge source of frustration in this series. It's okay to be a strong heroine - in fact, I encourage it - but everyone, including strong heroes, have moments when they must pull up their big girl, or big boy, pants and admit they need help. Help from those with hundreds of years experience. Help from those that are stronger and wiser. Help from those that may not know the answer, but know someone who might. I suppose if Riley was written differently the books wouldn't be quite as long but I grow weary of her holier/mightier-than-thou attitude.

Other than Riley's overconfidence, the book, in itself, is a great continuation of the series. The vampiric tendencies that Riley starts developing coincide with the actual turning of a human to a vampire and this aspect is developed wonderfully. We still get to see her struggle with her Victorian and Valerian inner monologues, all the while no one else, i.e. the Dupres, are able to read her thoughts. This is partly how Riley is able to keep such secrecy with Eli.

Riley finally snaps completely about halfway through the book, and the ensuing pages are not pretty. She spends a lot of time in and out of consciousness. When she awakens, although she's sluggish, she tries to attack anyone and everyone in her path. She has the vampire thirst and wants nothing more than human blood to quench it. Her memory of those around her, including Eli and Seth, is non-existent. She no longer recognizes anyone or anything. In order to save Riley, Eli and his family must take her to Romania and hand her over to the father of both Victorian and Valerian, Julian Arcos. To override the two sets of strigoi DNA swimming through her body, Julian must do the unthinkable to Riley. Then --- Bring on Eli, who isn't about to be outdone!!

After Riley's encounter with Julian, she has, yet again, different sets of abilities. In order to introduce some of these said powers Riley gets bombarded by some new paranormal characters. I figure that these characters will be our lead into Book 4. These new characters seem interesting enough but the way they are brought into the story is somewhat uncomfortable and disjointed. The why's of these new characters are understandable and will make for nice continuing storylines, there just needed to be a smoother transition is all.

I will definitely continue the series, however, and I hope that one day, Riley will learn to trust those around her more.(less)

The sequel was a tad disappointing with a much slower pace and not as much character development as I was hoping for. Sadly, EVENTIDE, the latest installment, is even more of a let down.

Where do I start? EVENTIDE feels like a rush job. Not the pacing, which is sluggish at best, but it just doesn’t feel like anyone involved with this book cared enough to make it good. Nearly every scene feels mechanical and completely lacking in emotion. When we last saw Riley, she was trying to adapt to her new abilities or Tendencies after surviving a vampire bite. Dark urges and blackouts begin to plague her and she starts to have out of body experiences where she slips into the minds/past of others. She does this a lot. Like half the book is made up of these various out of body scenes. It felt like the entire middle of the book was one long chapter stuck on repeat. Riley would fall asleep, have an out of body experience, Eli would shake her awake and say the exact same thing to her and get all anxious about the changes happening to her, Riley would dismiss his concerns, and then the whole thing would repeat.

When that cycle finally changed, it was almost like the author was trying to completely change her series and set up an entirely new premise for future books involving Riley leaving behind Savannah and her tattoo parlor to join WUP, Worldwide Unexplained Phenomenon in Scotland which is described as a detective/police organization that hunts demons and other evil creatures (you can read a full description about this next book titled BLACK FALLEN on the authors website). It was such a massive departure that I don’t even know what to think. Why not just put this series out of it’s misery and start fresh, as opposed to tearing down and restructuring this one? I don’t get it.

I’ve read other series which stumble and lose steam as they go along, but none more grievous of late than The Dark Ink Chronicles. AFTERLIGHT was a great book, and I highly recommend it as a standalone, but EVERDARK and especially EVENTIDE just didn’t live up to the debut and what should have been a great series.

Now that Riley has been bitten by both Valerian and Victorian, she's having to deal with a lot of strange voices and happenings and sometimes she's unsure what's real and what's not. On top of all that, she doesn't tell anyone and continues to act as if everything is alright. Things only fall apart when she can no longer account for huge losses of time and ends up attacking people she cares about.

Eventide starts off where Everdark ended: Riley has been taken by the Russian strigoi vamp, Victorian, and she experiences haunting images/dreams. And worse, she is losing time--hours--where she doesn't remember what she has done, much less, how the hell she got there.

Her doesn't-give-a-shit-attitude and her change of personality leaves her friends worried and wondering what the hell is going on. They all know Riley has the blood of two powerful strigoi vampires flowing through her veins, but this drastic change in her behavior makes them start to question whether Riley is strong enough to fight the darkness that threatens to consume her.

Eli Dupre, her sexy vampire boyfriend, is determined to save her before its too late. And the only way to prevent Riley from completely changing, is to hand her over to the man who also wants Riley for himself--Victorian.

This is the part of the book that I truly did enjoy. We get to see a softer side to Vic and my heart goes out to that emo-Russian vamp. He loves Riley. And knowing that Eli has her heart doesn't change that fact. He will always love her wait for her forever. Sniff....

Eventide reads so differently from the first books. The reader spends a lot of time wondering what the hell is going on. The missing chunks of time, the hallucinations, the strange dreams--all come from Riley's point of view and are very confusing. But I could almost handle that...almost.

However, when Riley and Eli are in Russia, they met up with new characters who have their own stories to tell. We see these stories when Riley touches them and she is "flung" inside their heads--seeing what they have experienced--and the ride is all the more confusing to the reader. I felt a sensory overload coming on with the new names, plot twists, and none of it seemed to stick.

It was a case of too much information in a little bit of time and left me skimming some of it. GASP! I loathe to skim, but frankly, I couldn't help it. There was nothing there to hold me to the story. And for me, that's just so sad. Especially since I know all this build-up will come into play with the next book in the series.

Overall, I was unimpressed with Eventide, but there were redeemable parts and I will continue to read this sometimes charming, sometimes dark, and always smexy series.

A little slow moving and not exactly what I expected it would be based on the second book, but all in all it was an enjoyable book with a content ending. This is that transitional book that sets the stage for the change in the storyline. Things are falling into place for Riley Poe at the end of this book, but I don't think things will go as smoothly as planned. Riley has chosen the path of her heart, but I don't think everyone will be as willing to accept her decision.. without at least a fight....more

I didn't expect this!!! WoW!!!

I loved Elle Jasper's first two books and I think Riley and Eli are fabulous, this book, however, took me totally by surprise...

I knew that Eventide had to pick up from where Everdark left off and that somehow the adventure had to draw to some sort of closure... and it did, but it has marked the beginning of something totally unexpected and new...

I enjoyed it but do not feel a great need to continue with the series. The protagonist is engaging but I do not see why she has so many men/ vampires who lust after her in her cargo pants. I do enjoy the vampire family who includes her and her brother. Would have been nice to include more of her Godparents, who were more present in previous books. If I were to change anything, I would narrow down the amount of characters and delve deeper into their lives.

God the first half of this book pissed me off. It was slow, sluggish and I almost stopped reading I was so annoyed with Riley. Then Romania hits and the story gets much more interesting, setting up more intricate plot lines for future books. So I'll say, if you've enjoyed this series, even as just simple fluff lit, then stick this one out. The first half stinks, but the second half kicks some (literal) ass and makes up for it. Nice save Jasper.
