Under the Rose picks up where Peterfreund left off with Secret Society Girl. Secrets and lies threaten to tear apart the oldest and most revered secret society at Eli University - the Order of the Rose and Grave - as the new class discovers a traitor in their midst.

Even as a member, our heroine Amy Haskel seems the be out of the loop. After enduring a difficult initiation, the tap class of D177 realized that the powerful patriarchs of the society never intended to allow women to join their orde...more

Reading Secret Society Girl put me in righteously indignant mode for two days straight. Now, admittedly, it doesn't always take much to send me there but, since my indignation was on behalf of fictional characters and couldn't hurt anyone, well, real, I figured it was okay to let the wrath reign. Besides, some of those dudes really deserved it. My wrath, that is. Reading Under the Rose was an entirely different experience. I spent the majority of the time grinning madly, silently egging certain...more

Amy Haskel attends the fictional, yet highly prestigious (think Harvard and Yale) Eli university. In Secret Society Girl Amy is a junior, and is surprised one day to be tapped as a pledge for the enigmatic Rose and Grave society. Having matriculated from a state university myself, I don’t know much about the Ivy League or the secret societies that form within them, but after doing a quick Google search, I’m guessing Rose and Grave is supposed to be comparable to Skull and Bones, which both Pres...more

This is the second book in the Society Girl series. The first started with main character Amy Haskell being tapped for one of the more elite secret societies at Eli University, Rose and Grave.

In this sequel, the problems that started with the formerly all male society tapping girls for the new year are still haunting Rose and Grave. This time, someone has posted a website that threatens to reveal all of the Rose and Grave secrets. One of her "brothers," Jenny, is not only determined to ignore t...more

To be fair, I should probably give this book 4 stars, but there's just something about this series that, when reading this book and the prior Secret Society Girl, I can't put them down. I will say this, I guess. Peterfreund's strong point isn't "really great at wrapping things up." Not to say there are loose ends or something similar, but rather that the book ends and you go, "Well, that was sudden!"

But still, the second installment of the series is every bit as good as the first one, deliciousl...more

So reading these books kind of made me feel like I was watching a show on the CW. Especially the first book--Amy goes to a Eli (which is basically Yale), she is an editor for one of the school's literary publications, and she gets involved in a Secret Society. It was very Rory Gilmore (even though Amy and Rory do not have similar personalities). But, I have to say that I was very entertained. A little intrigue, some good-looking guys, trying to change the status-quo, it was all in there. And, on...more

so this is the sequel to Secret Society Girl and i'm a little sad because i think this is the end of amy haskell, since she's graduating. however, i think she can come back . . . plus there's a role for the alums . . .

anyway, it's surprisingly fast-paced and exciting. it's the great blend of chick-lit and mystery, which i had forgotten. amy's both strong and weak like a real college kid, you think you know the twist but you totally don't (i was blind-sighted by the reveal, actually). i really,...more

I loved dipping into a world of Ivy League life and secret society rituals; this book really made a change from my usual reading. I felt exhilarated by Amy's schedule of papers, meetings and romantic liaisons with the delicious George 'Puck' Harrison. In truth, I was compelled to snatch moments with this book until I had devoured the entire thing.

The third book in the series, The Rites of Spring (Break), is scheduled for

Alright, I'll admit- I skimmed. That is, until the last 1/4th! Jeez, did it get intense.

Poe is honestly my favorite character, and I have no clue why. I was sorta hoping for something to go on between Poe/Bugaboo. Or should we call Poe...Jamie? or James? Haha.

And what about George? Man, wonder what's gonna happen there. Got some intense stuff going on there.

I honestly find all these clique things so fascinating. Jenny's an ... interesting character. I was shocked to find (view spoiler)[George a...more

I nearly trashed the first book in Secret Society Girl series as being shallow and plot being non exciting. I had even made up my mind not to read the next in the series . I found the book in best freind's book stack while I was searching for a refrence book and opened it just to see what was this one all about. Also partly to make snide remarks at my freind's reading taste :) So much for' MAKING UP MY MIND' I don't remember how long I sat with it but I must have been totally taken by it to give...more

I had never liked the series of the secrect society girl. However, when I picked this book up, and read the blurb, I thought it would have been more interesting and catchy to me. So, I'm siting in the train hoping to get on with this newly and wonderful book i picked out, to find out i can't even start to read the book.
For some reason, this book just never caught my attention from the first word " It was shopping period.." To me, this book was very very boring and impossible to read. Diana Peter...more

The same general remarks apply to Under the Rose as in my review of the first book, Secret Society Girl: surprisingly well-written fun with some lovely themes of loyalty and friendship lurking under the fluffy chicklit surface.

I particularly enjoyed the deeper-than-your-average-trade-paperback characterizations in this installment. The plot was a little too similar to the first book, perhaps, but was saved by some vivid insights into several secondary characters. I don't know the author's back...more

It's fall of Amy Haskel's senior year at fictional Eli University, and the nostalgia has already set in. The Diggers have recovered, mostly, from the events of the previous spring. They're preparing to initiate their last three members (taps who were away their junior spring), and the previous class members, D176, have all dispersed except for Poe, who is attending Eli Law. Two crises confront D177 before they can get too comfortable: factions within the patriarchy are still fighting the decisio...more

Senior year isn't going quite as Amy Haskel would have liked. Sure, she's at prestigious Ivy League Eli University and she's also a member of that oh-so exclusive secret society the Rose & Grave, but Amy is quickly finding out balancing classes, a senior thesis, and society business is not all it's cracked up to be. Once again, the R&G seems to be falling apart as the current members receive vague warnings threatening that the society is rotting out from the inside out. What's more, a tr...more

I'm just a sucker for this series already! Even when things seem a bit far-fetched, I still find myself not wanting to put it down. In this installment, we're still following Amy's journey at Eli college and the drama she's involved in with her secret society membership. This time there's a traitor that is leaking information that could be potentially damaging and it is having a huge impact on all of the society members. I felt really bad for Amy a few times because it seemed like so many people...more

You know when you read a series that you just love and when it finishes you feel a keen sort of loss? Something like nostalgia mixed with boredom? That was sort of how I felt about leaving behind the crew from Lauren Kunze's Ivy series. So naturally I immediately searched around for a replacement. I had never read Diana Peterfreund's 'Secret Society Girl' because it's title was so awful (as detailed in my review of that book). But I am glad that circumstances finally led me to the series. I LOVE...more

I think I would give this 2.5 stars.

I'm not really sure how I felt about the book. I guess I'm confused as to what this series is supposed to be--is it a mystery? Is it chick lit (which is what my library catalogue told me)? The fact that I can't really pin it down bothers me, because I don't really know what to expect.

I felt like this book was pretty much a repeat of book #1 (Secret Society Girl), if you change Amy's boyfriend and who is out to get her club. I don't know, I guess I just didn't...more

This was a very satisfying sequel to "Secret Society Girl". There is more of a blend of mystery and chick lit as the Eli secret society, Rose & Grave, is about to be exposed online. Amy Haskel is a senior now and is still finding her way in the society that now takes up so much of her time.

Amy Haskel - super smart sex pot.
This book didn't hit me up-side the head like the first one did with some hard core "girl power"... although Amy is definitely the babe with the power (what power?) the power of voodoo (who do? you do! remind me of the babe. [sorry:])
Amy is adjusting to life in the powerful Rose and Grave... and boy and friends and social life and school. That seems to be the basic premise - there is of course the question of who is leaking the R&G secrets although it's not r...more

At the end of Secret Society Girl (which is way less stupid than its title would suggest) Amy Haskel and her fellow Diggirls showed all their antiquated society brothers that they planned to stay in Rose and Grave. Under the Rose picks up after the summer, at the beginning of the Diggers' senior year. Just as Amy and her brothers are settling into their new roles without the previous class, they are shocked to discover a mole in their midst. Someone has been selling Digger secrets to the media,...more

More of the same of the first book--Amy's a fun protagonist. The end got a little thrill-y silly for me though. Not sure I'll read the next one.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'll totally read the next one.

2nd of 3 in the Secret Society Girl series --- fun book. It's the equivalent of watching a sitcom on TV, I think. As with the 1st book in the series, I mostly enjoyed the references to Yale collegiate life.
Monica
I'm really making a dent on my list of thoughtless reading for the summer. Even if this book is a bit predictable, it was still fun - who doesn't love reading of rich people and their secret societies?
Susan
I just pulled this book off a display in the library and I really liked it. Chick lit with a hint of mystery. I want to read her first book, Secret Society Girls.

Great companion to the first book. Loved it so much that once I got to a certain part at 2am, I just couldn't put it down till I finished it at 4:30am!

Diana Peterfreund has been a costume designer, a cover model, and a food critic. Her travels have taken her from the cloud forests of Costa Rica to the underground caverns of New Zealand (and as far as she’s concerned, she’s just getting started). Diana graduated from Yale University in 2001 with dual degrees in Literature and Geology, which her family claimed would only come in handy if she wrote...more
