El alcalde Serge Papon quiere ven...more

This book came labelled as Joanne Harris meets Clochemerle. It's a long long time since Clochemerle and I can barely remember it, but I love Joanne Harris, so this had a lot to live up to. Did it make the grade? Yes, I loved it. The Websters, the English couple who fell in love with a small part of France and wanted to make it their future, find reality hitting them in the face with the minutiae of French politics. Papon, the Mayor, makes a superb baddie but he's a 3D person, not just someone to...more

I loved L'Auberge. This is your typical sweet, heart warming, well written, laugh out loud fiction. Nothing wrong with that on the contrary, it provides a few hours of laughter and entertainment. And having encountered French bureaucracy, I dare say it does capture the funny side of the French. All of the characters are lovable or funny, even the villains. As for French cooking there is a part where someone mentions a great French chef Jamio Le Vert whose food is the best. Well, guess what, it t...more

After having read The Book Thief I wanted something lighter, something that'd make me giggle, if not laugh out right.

At first I was indecisive between two titles, one by Stephen Fry, the other this. In the end though I found this tale delightful after a test reading for 10 pages or so. Also, it was a simple story.

Being from Taiwan where good, hot food is readily available almost 24/7 even on a public holiday, the rumours of UK food had long haunted me before my departure for the 2 years of study...more

I may be biased about this book, considering the author comes from the same town as me and went to the same college as me, but I thought it was rather good.

On an impulse, English couple Lorna and Paul buy an Auberge (a pub/inn) in a little French commune. The mayor is not best pleased though, and soon sets about doing everything be can to shut the business down.

The majority of the book is about Lorna and Paul's attempt to keep their auberge open, and the locals as they try to help or hinder them...more

equilibrio in cui tradizione e vecchi rancori vengono...more

Non ho nemmeno ben capito cosa ci...more

I have to say that I really loved this book. It was light and easy to read, but at the same time I didn't want to put it down and so finished it in one day. It's a warm and enjoyable story, set in a French village, about a young English couple who buy the local Auberge, much to the horror of the locals who fear English cooking above almost everything else. The villain of the piece is the local mayor who has his heart set on obtaining the property for his brother-in-law and is determined to drive...more

Okay, I admit it--picked it up because it's set in France (and was recommended by a source I thought trustworthy).

This is a dreadfully-written book, and very tedious and slow. Could NOT finishe. Life is just too short for drek.

I got bored with it. I won't be reading the other two in the trilogy. Cf http://www.goodreadingguide.com/LAube... for a cracking review.

Julia Stagg has led a nomadic existence, spending most of her adult life abroad. Most recently she ran a small auberge/restaurant in the French Pyrenees and this was where the Fogas Chronicles were born.

The first in the series, L'Auberge, was published in May 2011 and is a heart-warming comedy based around the lives, loves and machinations of the inhabitants of the small commune of Fogas in the A
