30 August 2011 WHO HAS WHAT? ALL ABOUT GIRLS' BODIES AND BOYS' BODIES by Robie H. Harris and Nadine Bernard Westcott, ill. Candlewick Press, September 2011, 32p., ISBN: 978-0-7636-2931-1

"No one knows my body better than me
It tells me "Let's eat!', it tells me "Go pee!'"
-- Peter Alsop, "My Body"

"Lucky Trimble crouched in a wedge of shade behind the Dumpster. Her ear near a hole in the paint-chipped wall of Hard Pan's Found Object Wind Chime Museum and Visitor Center, she listened as Short Sammy t...more

Where was this book when I was growing up? In fact, where was this book when there was all that to-do about The Higher Power of Lucky a few years back? In simple but straightforward fashion, the author explains how the bodies of boys and girls are alike and then how they are different. Girls have vaginas, for instance, while boys do not. Boys have penises while girls do not. The inclusion of dogs as well to show that they, too, have some of the same body parts is helpful. One of my favorite aspe...more

My 6 year old son has some questions about his body that I am not prepared to answer. I read this book to him in hopes that it would start paving the way. It did. He learned quite a bit about the female anatomy he didn't quite know - which led to more questions... not sure I was ready for that can o' worms! Sadly, it did not go far enough in depth for him... he wants to know "why" we have them. I want to make sure that he feels that it is OK to talk to me about sex now so that when he gets older...more

Have a child asking about their body and the ways that boys and girls are different? Here is a picture book for younger children that answers those questions clearly, simply and with a great matter-of-fact tone. Told through a family trip to the beach, the book starts with the child characters having questions themselves. Emphasis is placed on the fact that boys and girls are mostly the same in their bodies. They both love to play, love to laugh, but they do have some body parts that are differe...more

Great multicultural cast to explain in age-appropriate language the similarities and differences of girls and boys bodies. The comparison of girl and boy animals is smart, and will make sense to younger children. The setup of going to the beach and undressing separate little tent area is clever,non-creepy situation to talk about this subject matter. This book uses the scientific name for sex organs, which is great.

Grades Pre-K to 3. Finally-- a book I can give to parents that talks about boy and girl bodies and how they are different or the same. Most of the book talks about how boys and girls are alike. Then they compare human bodies with animal bodies and how boy and girl animals are different, too. There are two pages that show boy and girl parts, and the cartoon illustrations by Westcott are fabulous.

My son was asking questions after observing a good touch/bad touch talk at his school. So, I picked this up at the library. It is very straightforward and while it is fun to read it isn't funny. We took turns reading pages. Every time we came to a page with a private part, my son told me we had to read it in our super secret spy voice!

This was a book for parents to use to explain body parts, including specific body parts ( ie: penis, testicles, vagina, ovaries, etc) It did a good job.

However at this time I am specifically looking for books for K-2 which are read alouds. This would not be a good read aloud. There is a lot to discuss but would be best one on one.

I really like the comparisons between human bodies and dogs bodies, and think kids will too. Luckily there is the disclaimer: " Puppies pee and poop too. But not in diapers, or potties, or toilets like people do." It names the reproductive organs, but does not explain their roles.
Anne
Wonderful introduction to body parts for young children. Does not cover where babies come from, just the proper names of the major body parts. Every library should have this in their collection to give to parents looking for a warm introduction to a difficult subject.
Jenny
A perfect introduction for a young child as to "who has what parts." Our preschool child is endlessly fascinated by this book and asks us to read it to her every night. She's also asked a lot of questions about her and others' bodies. I'm really impressed by this book!

I am a fan of Robie Harris' other books about bodies for kids. This one is aimed at preschoolers and it's the perfect amount of information about the difference between boys and girls for this age group. Going in my personal library. Excellent!
Donalyn
A tasteful, scientifically accurate book for preschoolers about the similarities and differences between girls' and boys' bodies. I appreciated the diversity and acceptance shown through the illustrations, too. A must have for parents.
stillme
A good and (very) basic introduction to the difference between boys and girls. Charlotte doesn't seem to interested yet, but when she starts asking, this would be a good place to start.

Monica
Great book on body parts for curious preschoolers. Bonus for colorful, diverse depictions of bi-racial and same-sex couples, grandparents and daddies taking care of children, breastfeeding mommies, etc.
Yoo Kyung Sung
Carefully written and illustrated. Having pets and families and diverse populations are all great. Gender roles are here all carefully illustrated ( ie. nursing man on the beach)
Louisa Verma
Nice explanation of the difference between girls and boys for those curious little minds. My younger one had me read it several times!!
Danielle
Great, and very straight forward, explanation of the similarities and differences between girls and boys, and dogs!
GraceAnne
A most excellent book for very young children about body parts. All of them. Robie Harris does it again.
Mary Lee
Will our librarian put this one on the shelf? She SHOULD, but...Wonder what Franki would do?

Perfect way to answer my kids' questions about bodies! They are 3 and 5. I Aldo appreciate the way the text resists assigning anything besides "different parts" to boys and girls.
