Dougal was a shy little bear with a heart of gold. He never got to play with the other toys in the house because they were all new and clean and perfect and he was not. He often wished he could be new like them...

Then one rainy afternoon, Dougal is left outside and ends up in the garbage bin. How much can a teddy bear? But even though he's down, Dougal is not out. He finds...more

Jack Kirby and the X-man
Matt Dray doesn't have the Early Childhood Education degree, Literature Masters and Doctorate examining the impact of parent-guided early childhood reading on educational outcomes. But he has developed a great story, and, as a garbage dump employee, has an in-depth understanding of an environment that fascinates all kids.

I loved going to the dump as a kid: the man-made mountains, all the interesting things people threw out, the huge machines and that smell - yuck! These days Occupational Health...more

I just love this book (and the sequel). I love the story, and the message. I love the look of it with the wonderful photo journal feel. It's just fantastic. I love the back story that Matt Dray was working in a dump in Queensland and found Dougal and the other dump toys that had been thrown away, and made a living, breathing work of art from them. The picture of Dougal in the wheelie bin is SO sad.. But Dougal and we learn that sometimes bad things happen so that good things can happen, and that...more

Told in crummy, sometimes coffee-stained snapshots, with more than enough heart and modest humor to compensate for its appearance. There's a spoiled little girl with too many stuffed toys at the beginning, and a bloomin' big boss man toward the end, but it's the completely believable companionship between Dougal, his fellow discards, and the guys who run the dump, that makes for a little piece of paradise in even the unlikeliest of places. Featuring a shaggy thing with one eye who turns out to b...more

Touching story of bear who is rescued from the rubbish and a dragon (backhoe) by a man, the friends the bear collects, and a happy ending to an ending that might not have been happy. My students related to Dougal -- sometimes life does stink, but it doesn't have to stay stinky. This will be on my read it every year list!

This is a fictionalized scrapbook that is based on a true story about a stuffed animal who was rescued at a dump in Australia's Gold Coast. Over time, many other stuffed animals were also rescued and the photographs taken are the basis for the storyline. It's a cute story and has a nice diary theme to it.

As seen on Awful Library Books. Once again our library had this book. It had me at the Scottish Moose. Dray claiming responsibility for tipping over the "dragon" was an added bonus. Silly Australians.

This is a much loved story that has been borrowed from our local library many times!Such a delightful, bittersweet yet optimistic story about a discarded bear named Dougal and his adventures.Lots of humour to appeal to the adult reading to the child.

This is a great book! You can purchase this book from Brandi, the booklady. The only bad part is the bear drank "gingerbeer". But other than that it is a cute book.

i as worried this was going to be another environmental book or a pro toy book, but it was a really cute (and funny) story with a good moral.

It's hard for a book like this to stand free of the shadow of Toy Story 3, but this one does quite successfully.

Excellent!! Sometimes being put in the bin turns out for the best.

Got this book at the library with my niece & nephews (2, 5, 6 years) and I thought it was really cute. The kids like it, but I think i like it more.
