Dougal the Garbage Dump Bear
by
Matt Dray
Dougal was a shy little bear with a heart of gold. He never got to play with the other toys in the house because they were all new and clean and perfect and he was not. He often wished he could be new like them...
Then one rainy afternoon, Dougal is left outside and ends up in the garbage bin. How much can a teddy bear? But even though he's down, Dougal is not out. He finds...more

Matt Dray doesn't have the Early Childhood Education degree, Literature Masters and Doctorate examining the impact of parent-guided early childhood reading on educational outcomes. But he has developed a great story, and, as a garbage dump employee, has an in-depth understanding of an environment that fascinates all kids.

I just love this book (and the sequel). I love the story, and the message. I love the look of it with the wonderful photo journal feel. It's just fantastic. I love the back story that Matt Dray was working in a dump in Queensland and found Dougal and the other dump toys that had been thrown away, and made a living, breathing work of art from them. Touching story of bear who is rescued from the rubbish and a dragon (backhoe) by a man, the friends the bear collects, and a happy ending to an ending that might not have been happy. My students related to Dougal -- sometimes life does stink, but it doesn't have to stay stinky. This will be on my read it every year list!
This is a fictionalized scrapbook that is based on a true story about a stuffed animal who was rescued at a dump in Australia's Gold Coast. Over time, many other stuffed animals were also rescued and the photographs taken are the basis for the storyline. It's a cute story and has a nice diary theme to it.
As seen on Awful Library Books. Once again our library had this book. It had me at the Scottish Moose. Dray claiming responsibility for tipping over the "dragon" was an added bonus. Silly Australians.
