The book begins with these ominous lines

I, Siya Seth, committed suicide.

The line kind of sets the tone of the book. Siya (in her early teens) speaks to us after her death and unravels the mystery surrounding her.

Born & brought up in a rich & affluent family, Siya has everything in life that a kid could ask for & sometimes more than that. What she doesn’t have is peace of mind. Considered to be rude, brash & unfriendly Siya lives in her own world. She is guarding a dirty secret.

Looks like this book got the inspiration for its title from Paulo Coelho’s popular book Veronika Decides To Die. Both the books share a common theme of protagonist’s desire/attempt at suicide and the similarity ends there. The title itself varies so much in both these books: the title of Coelho’s book evokes emotional reaction whereas the other sounds like a news headline. Never knew a last name could alter the book’s title and its effect on the readers.

Siya is a depressed teenager who has a dar

While I have read quite a few novels of debutant authors, I noticed that a debutant author would always try to write a happy formula story. Stories where things might not be hunky dory initially, but eventually come back in order, making the protagonist happy by the end. But despite the fact that Siya Seth Decides to Die is the first novel by Sneha Mehta, she has chosen to break the rules of happy ending, and painted love and intimacy in darker hues.

This book picks up the most difficult discussi

I read it while travelling to Mumbai.
This is a work of a debutant Indian author, and much to my satisfaction, not another in the mile long list of Bollywood masala novels.
It's basically about a teenage girl Siya, who committed suicide. She narrates her life story, revealing the reasons for her suicide.
The most horrifying parts include the incest- her father who sexually harassed Siya right from her childhood, and the undeniable aftermaths of this harassment on her life.
Though this book could h
