All of Jefferey Gitomer's books are loaded with humor and wisdom; and this book is no exception. I really don't like to network and mingle too much, but this book cuts out all of the phony baloney B.S. of the stereotypical corporate suave party stud who is moving briskly from social circle to social circle with ease and brilliance and only greed on his mind. Really that kind of "networking" is just you putting up a front at social events until you can convince a person that they need your produc...more

Favorites:

Connecting is all about your friendliness, your ability to engage, and your willingness to give value first.

The questions that you ask, the ideas you bring to the table, and your communication skills, combined with your passion, belief, and attitude, are the fundamentals of what it takes to connect.

… how to position, how to promote, how to provide value, how to communicate, how to make presentations, how to engage, how to connect…

All things being equal, people want to do business with...more

The cover of this book is so blah, it was recommended to me so when I grabbed it I thought "what is this?!" I read the first page or two and couldn't put it down. The information is so straight forward and written in a conversation style that doesn't give you a bunch of gimmicky ideas. I hate the word networking but the author makes it clear networking is about connecting with people and you connect with people by relationships you build. That's powerful stuff bc the only thing different about y...more

AWESOME book! Must read for anyone who is wants to take their business to the next level by developing relationships with other business professionals and potential clients. Love the easy to read format, the pictures cartoons keep it light, although the content is no laughing matter. He suggests you read it 3 or 4 times until you know the content rock solid. Gitomer has a great interactive website with "bits" of info throughout the book that you can expand on by visiting his site. He's also on t...more

Think human commodity.

Everything in this short book is accurate and I agree with everything the author presents. However, I just don't like the idea of sizing up every person I meet to see what they can do for me. The author instructs the reader to give value first so a connection is made so the other person sees value in you. That's a great thing to do. Does it feel right? Not usually. It's called using people. Like it or not, those are the mechanics of socializing. That's how it works! You ca...more

I was first put-off by the tone and tenor of this book, but then I realized it was providing me solid information, I just was looking at it from the wrong perspective. This book focuses on building a business network, while I had been looking for a book on how to maintain a network. However, Jeffrey Gitomer explores key points in building a network that benefits you and those you choose to connect with. This book helped me view my business in a very different way, and for that I am thankful.

I am not so sure about this book. It is a pretty old book and the most funniest part is in the back of book. I never paid attention to the comic until now maybe that is his boss or co-worker saying "It's a lovely diamond, but I told you to engage the client. I didn't tell you to get engaged to the client." The brief case says a question. It's a good thing I am donating that book.

good advice and strategies... it's one of those that most people will read but probably not put into practice. although if they do, they can basically fall right into success. i picked up some great strategies and suggestions to building my business.

It's a quick and easy read. I recommend reading once straight through and then a 2nd time to take notes and set goals.

I first saw this book in the airport, on the best seller shelf. I've been a mom and a teacher most of my life, and am pretty new to the business world, so this intrigued me. Before I could even board the plane, I immediately picked up on Jeff's very positive, common-sense (and apparently effective!) life rules about making the kind of quality connections with others that will benefit them before they benefit you. I like his approach, his wit, his straight-shooting. If you're in the connecting bu...more

Read NOV 2006

This book is focused on building relationships to influence sales, but opened my eyes to the importance of building and maintaining strong networks -- now called social networks with the advent of myspace.com, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.

"I listened to the audio book this week and enjoyed it. I have the book on my shelf and will read that as well. If you have read the Little Red Book of Selling you will enjoy this. Both books have some great ideas.

I love everything by Gitomer. He does all the hard work for you and takes the theories and practices of the best in the business - adds his own twist and presents it in a way that is easy to understand and put into practice.
This book is perfect for anyone in business - not just sales. If you want to make connections - read this.

It's a great book not only for those in sales, but for everybody. Those rules and ideas from the book can be applied to all aspects of life. Applied successfully and bring excellent results.

Very repetitive but easy to read book about the importance of establishing one's self in terms of writing to enhance your own image so that others will want to meet you. Also harps heavily on helping a connection first before asking for anything.

Came across the book when I was stuck at O'Hare. Read the whole thing on the flight back home. Of all the books by Gotimer, this one is probably the best. A light, business book.

Although I read many books on face to face social networking this is probably the best in its class. It finally got me off to apply its principles in day to day life.

Some great ideas in this book and plenty of reinforcement for the fact that strong relationships are the key to success in every critical area in life.

summation: add value to people and karma will reward you. connect others who can benefit each other and the universe will reward you. i'm always talking to people and saying "you know, i know a guy / girl who does xyz - you guys should talk." one of these days, karma may actually come through for me. until then, i still think of networking (trying to get something out of someone else) as dirty and skeezy. but, connecting others is helpful - which is why i try to do it... have to benefit your fri...more

Very interesting book to read for people in sales or who are looking to connect with others in general.
Easy to read and you can feel the dynamism of the writer.

This was our book club book for work this month. Great for someone in sales - but it has helped me in my personal life as well. It's really changed the way I've worked the past month, and it's paid off!

Gitomer, in his traditional light-hearted approach, offers his take on professional networking and relationship building. Very easy to read. Straightforward information. Similar concepts as other titles in this subject matter, but presented in a different way.

This was a quick an simple read. I don't think I had any huge revelations reading this book. Instead, Gitomer methodically and delightfully reminded me the basics to relationships. These basics are great to review frequently.
Shawn Camp
Has some good strategies and practices to follow. At times though it feels like an avenue for the author to brag of his accomplishments. I'm a big fan of Gitomer's, but this doesn't rank as one of his best.
