His own father had been a member of the Socialist Party of America, running as an aldermanic candidate on the ticket for Chicago's 49th Ward before the war, before selling out to Roosevelt and the Democrats. Dad himself had supported Norman Thomas in the forties and had grown up knowing Carl Sandburg, grandfather's newspaper colleague, poet and SPA functionary. I don't normally pick up books of this genre but my younger brother gave it to me for a Christmas present and was very pleased to have come up with it. I enjoyed it much more than I would have anticipated.
