When we last left Garret and Will, Will had stolen the box in the hope of traveling to the summer country in order to become human again. In The Watchtower, Garret follows Will's trail, determined to join him on his journey. The Watchtower shifts POV between Garret and Will for a large part of the story and we see the romance between Will and Marguerite. It is essentially the story of Will's attempt to become human and Garret's bid to help him.

Garet James is the last in a line of women "watchtowers" who protect humanity from evil--particularly the magic kind. In BLACK SWAN RISING she had to learn about her unknown powers and save New York City from destruction. She had the help of faries, goblins, as well as that of the rich and handsome vampire Will Hughes. But he has disappeared, leaving clues for Garet to follow.

The Watchtower is the 2nd book in the Black Swan Trilogy. It picks up where we left off, Garet has travlled to France to try to find Will who left her taking the silver box with him.
Where as Black Swan Rising was more fast paced this book develops the story at a much slower pace and combines two parts. In alternating chapters we follow Gart on her seacrh for Will but we also learn Will Hughes's background and how he became to be a vampire. There is a twist whch brings the two stories together an...more

Never judge a book by its cover, and this one definitely shouldn’t be. Nothing on the cover of The Watchtower indicates that it is any different than the slew of “skinny white chick in a prom gown” examples currently flooding the market. And I started reading, filled with severe misgivings that I’d just found yet another Fallen clone.
Fortunately, the cover is misleading.

An original and interesting take on the regular parnormal/urban fantasy with faeries being the predominent race, and faeries with a bit of a dark twist to them. However, it was rather let down by the prose. The authors are a husband/wife team, one of which is a poet. However, instead of being lyrical and evocative, the colourful language just feels clunky and unwieldly. And the characters - particularly young Will, with his lovelorn angsting, just made me want to kick him in the head and tell hi...more
At the end of the first book, Will Hughes, the vampire Garet James is in love with, ran away to France with the silver box in the hope of finding his way to the Summer Country of the Fey and a way of ending his vampire curse.
This book starts with Garet in Paris, looking for signs from Will and her own passage into the Summer Country. After meetings with various strange and mythical beings Garet does indeed find her way to Will and the Summer Country only for the pair to find that they still have...more

Another good book by the collaboration between Carol Goodman and her husband Lee Slonimsky is “The Watchtower” the second book in the Black Swan Rising series. Although, I liked more the first one, I still think that this is a very good book.
It’s a very different urban fantasy book with great plot with mystery and excellent characters, both the main and the secondary.

While I wouldn't class this as 'epic fantasy', it does share a characteristic of it: such importance is placed on introducing characters and creatures, there's little room for plot movement in only a few hundred pages. It seemed to me as if the authors didn't have much more to say than, "See how many creatures I know."
What plot movement there was seemed little more than a scavenger hunt. A frustrating scavenger hunt. Creature A says, 'Creature B has what you want.' Creature B says 'Creature C ha...more

Once again the collaboration between Carol and Lee creates a wonderful story.
The Watchtower was a perfect blend of poetry, narrative, mystery and adventure. Garret and Will are wonderful characters and The Watchtower beautifully provides the reader with their background.
Picking up right where Black Swan Rising left off, The Watch tower is another page turner and I cannot wait for the third installment. For those of you who have read the first installment, you will find the reappearance of some o...more

Having read and enjoyed Black Swan Rising I blogged The Watchtower on my Wishlist. Sarah Broadhurst from Sarah’s Book Reviews http://sbroadhurstreviews.blogspot.com/ offered me to read her copy. This is my guest post on her blog.

Overall, I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed The Watchtower. While it did have its problems, compared to about 90% of the other urban fantasy books populating the shelves, this one stands apart. The world and history is fascinating. The characters are believable and if the plot does lag and the writing between Garet and Will’s sections does seem rather unbalanced with quality, I’m sure readers following this series won’t mind. The story is solid, the plot is interesting and, overall,...more
I was sorely disappointed with this book, I really enjoyed the first book in the series but this book was really tough to get through, I had to force myself to finish it. The characters have no substance, especially Will who comes off as a self-centered, arrogant, simpering fool, which I understand was the point in some sense. But there was absolutely nothing redeeming about him, nothing that made me want to find out his story, I was just bored. The setting was well done, and the parts with Gare...more
I really enjoyed the Shakespeare-inspired world of faeries in Black Swan Rising when I read it a year ago. The characters, story, and world of jewelry artist Garet James as she discovers her family's history with the faerie court. When I learned it was the first in a series, I was excited to see what was coming next from writers Carol Goodman (Arcadia Falls, The Night Villa) and her husband – poet and hedge fund manager Lee Slonimsky.

This is the second book in the Black Swan series. It, like the first is brilliant. The story continues with Garet now on her journey to find Will. It's filled with various interesting characters, all of which are sturdy, making you want to learn about them. All the characters adding to the story, making it richer. Garet, with the help of these characters progresses in her search for Will and finds out more about herself and him. Like the first in the ser...more

As the second book of the black swan trilogy, I held high hopes for the storyline remaining in tact and being built upon more. What had happened was a sub standard storyline and two characters stories entwining to create the final mystery at the end of the novel.
Unfortunately I could not get into this book following two stories and so started another book instead, coming back after I finished that book to find out the end of the story.
It was confusing to jump without prior warning from one st...more
Garet is quickly learning that the world in which she lives is not at all what she thought it was.... there are more fairy types living in plain sight than she ever imagined.... and all of them seem to be more than willing to help her find her way to Summer Land and she never seems suspicious at all!!!

(3.5 stars) This is the second book in the Black Swan Rising series. Garet has been waiting for a sign from Will Hughes to join him in his quest to get to the Summer Country in hopes of becoming mortal again. She has her doubts after he stole the box from her, but when she does get a signal from him, she is off to France to see if she can make her own way into the Summer Country. The story is told in parallel between Garet's journey and Will own past journey when he sought immortality to be with...more
The Watchtower was no where near as good as the original book in the series. It lacks the beautiful descriptions and whimsical feel of the first, but it is more than that. The characters don't progress much really, and this boils down to simply a fest quest. Half of the story is the main female character chasing down her love interest, the other half is the love interest living through his past. We run into squid lady, and the man encased in the tree roots, weird character after weird character,...more
I just finished this book this morning on the bus, and I am still speechless about the ending, but I won't spoil it. The Watchtower continues the saga (and it feels like an old fashioned saga) of Garet, the New York jewelry designer, and her vampire, Will. Will has loved the women of Garet's family for generations, beginning with Marguerite, the eponymous Watchtower. She was immortal and fell in love with the mortal, Will. [After a short affair with "the poet," from Stratford-upon-Avon.] Their l...more

3 stars, really about 2.75
I did not enjoy this book nearly as much as "Black Swan Rising." While Garet's story was consistent and meeting so many different Fae was a wonderful element I could not get over the portrayal of Will as a young man. For me it was completely unbelieveable. And it soured the story for me. But because of Garet and the other Fae, I loved Octavia, I will eventually get around to reading "the Shape Stealer," the last book in the triology. But it won't be at t...more

Again I wish I could give half stars as I'd rate this book 2.5. There are parts I really skimmed over. Though I cannot really say which parts without giving away a major point in the book. I like the main characters and I care about what happens to them but sometimes I just shake my head at how dumb Garet acts. Since the last 50 pages were wonderful and it ended on a clif hanger I'll probably buy the next book in the series if/when its released.
It took me forever to finish one. I found the parts of Will's backstory to be really boring, so that was one cause of struggle. The other was me being distracted by wedding stuff. :)
I enjoyed the first book much more. As soon as a certain...event happened, I knew exactly what was going to happen, and that there'd most definitely be a third book. Which I'm just kinda eh about at this point.

Watchtower continues the tale begun in Black Swan Rising. Garet travels to France after receiving a message from Will. In order to follow him into Summer Country, she'll have to gain the favor of multiple local fey.
I loved the additional characters and their stories, but wasn't so much a fan of Will's alternating story line.

A fantasy book with Vampires/Wood Nymphs/tree men and Faerie folk. Very disappointed with this book, the 1st half of this book read like the Author was trying to put in as many Mythical creatures as possible, all mixed with a rather lame love story and set with vaguely historical background. 2nd half improved slightly. My overall opinion is don't bother!
I nearly fell asleep reading this book
We travel back in time(with Will) and then to present 9With Garet) and then back and then present and the back....you get the drift
THEN you get present,BUT travelling back
Confused?...add in a whining/jealous Garet and you have a storyline!
Lots of details and LOADS of following people around time zones
I preferred the first book

I didn't like this one nearly as much as Black Swan Rising. Not enough *there* there to explain the attraction between Will and Garet (or even younger Will and Marguerite). And just as the introduction of time travel spells doom for any TV series I like, it doesn't do books any favors, either. I want so much to care about these characters and their stories, but I'm just not drawn in.
i found it difficult to getinto this book, it wasn't the story so much but the way it was presented. we left our to main characters travelling on different paths and in this book we follow Garet in modern day france and will back in Shakesperean England. Each chapter changes character and i found that i was just gettin into that story when we changed chapters and changed stories. the book didn't flow! towards the end of the book the two stores started to collide and the the book flowed much bett...more
The first book was decent, but this one is just ugh. Overblown, over dramatic, romantic smushy, gag me, sickness. All the characters did was alternate between mooning over each other and wallowing in their own misery for 400 pages. Get a life. And a story. Blech. Not interested in reading book 3 to see how it all ends.

Despite my reservations with the first novel in this series, I was still intrigued enough to give this sequel a try. Bad choice. I couldn't make it past the first chapter, when the heroine descended into the depths of a tree. Yes, a tree.
