"In this I found two people hopelessly in love with such endearing sweetness~ I also found rape and thank God a rape survivor and a wounded warrior~parts of this book was so realistic that I say~"

Please~Read this book with Caution~ if you are a Rape Survivor or Wounded Warrior~ and/or if matter's of the heart such as this leads to discontent within you~This is a dark and gritty fictional story~

This was a great book. I fell head over heels in love with Sergei. Sergei Stolkov is a Captain in the Doctrine. Sergei is part of the force that is trying to take control of the planet Cirokko. He is young and naive. Although he is a loyal soldier, his deepest desires go against the core philosophy of the Doctrine. The Doctrine believes that every action and every decision is made for the collective good. It is ingrained in everyone. The needs of the individual are n...more
CAUTION: Long Review, Spoilers
Dark Edge of Honor is about a soldier and a spy on opposite side who, somehow against years of training and some brainwashing, quickly fall in love and give up everything to grab their HEA. There's war, rape, blackmail, torture, betrayal, vindication, and ultimately redemption—all excellent ingredients for a thriller of a story. Alas, I was confused, bored, frustrated, and bored by the story.

My thoughts: This was a hard book for me to write a review for. I actually had to read it twice, as the first time thru was so intense of a ride all I could do was drool on myself, gasp, stutter and want to scream at the authors… “OMG what did you do?!” … and... so on and... so forth. When I finished, I had no words and was left a bit dazed, wide eyed and gaping, with only one word uttered… Dayum. A review, this does not make. Upon rereading, I am really no better off. The second time thru still...more
Special Forces in SPAAAAAACE!
It's all there too. A thinly disguised Afghanistan under the Russian invasion with the natives being helped out by a group opposed to the invaders. Blue sky and the mountains. MCs on opposite sides. Vertical coffins, face scarves, and clandestine meetings in hovels. And, quite literally, alternate universe Vadim. It's actually nice to see that guy again, even if it's in a slightly different form. I'm not sure how good of a stand-in Mike is for Dan the Man, but I also...more

rating is more a 4.5 than a 4 . . .
good solid story. good writing. i got sucked into the characters and story line and of course stayed up until the wee hours to finish the book. but there are a few issues for me.
1 - i kept having to go back and reread sections to understand the whole world building aspect, but perhaps it is because i haven't read sci-fi in a while.
2 - the ending . . .it just ended. i thought i understood the character development and was expecting more from one of the charact...more

This certainly isn't a book about a sweet romance – it's a book about war, trust, duty, honor and also love. The beginning is a bit slow, but after that I could barely put this book down. Mike and Sergei's story is dark, violent and at times heartbreaking. And boy, am I glad it all ended well! I nearly cried as Sergei struggled against death and was about to lose the first man he really loved. I felt so sorry for both of our heroes.

Sergei Stolkov is a young captain in the Coalition Forces; he believes completely in the Doctrine but isn’t too thrilled with his current assignment as aide to a general on the planet of Cirokko. He is unsure it’s in the best interest of the coalition to try to conquer Cirokko, and fears it will once again earn its nickname, Fool’s Gamit. Added to his frustration with the mission objective, his mixed feelings about the brother General he serves causes his life to be mostly a waking nigh...more

When you hear Voinov, you breathe in slowly to feel the exquisite excitement on what you will be about to read next. Dark Edge of Honor is a collaboration of Voinov and Rhianon Etsweiler. From Ms Etsweiler’s bio, we can see her background and read about the three generations of military that is in her family. Breathe deep this one is gonna be good!!!

Loved this book, great co-write, seamless. I would give it 4.5 except there are no half ratings. Just the ending that took the total shine off for mine, it just....stopped. I have a few questions that a short story sequel would probably cover really well. Hard book to review without waffling, so I'll just waffle.

Considering this is a novel by Carina Press, the ebook imprint of Harlequin, I should be surprised the romance is good, but well, I was. Sci-fi novel with a heavy military subtheme, “doctrine” as a credo and various other elements made me wonder if the romance in the story was able to not only survive but emerge. Yes, it was, and in a way that without doubt makes this a romance. Even if Mike and Sergei are of different side of the war, even if they should be enemies, even if Mike is betraying Se...more
I have always followed Aleksandr Voinov, as he is one of the few men writing m/m and his works are phenomenal. I went into this number with high expectations, expected to love it just as I loved all his other books.
Unfortunately he seems to have made a not-too-great choice in a writing partner, or maybe the stars aren't in alignment. The sex is scorching hot and brilliantly gritty, just as I've come to expect from him, but the intervening moments of angst were hard to trudge through. Later in th...more

I'm not sure why I waited so long to read this stunning book. I recently downloaded it because of a tweet I saw about it being a top romance book, and I heard good things about both authors. Dark Edge of Honor was a fantastic collaboration, and I hope that these two not only continue to write together, but do it soon.

Oh, I really enjoyed this one! From the very beginning it was dangerous and full of adventure. I love it when a book grabs me in the beginning and I have a tough time setting it aside to do other things and I'm just waiting for the opportunity to pick it up again. I think it was the whole 'Sword of Damocles' notion of waiting for the poor innocent to figure out what was going on when he learns of his betrayal on two counts plus the other hero's untenable position he is put into through no fault...more
Mike is an Alliance soldier and spy, working to gather information on the Doctrine's activities on Cirroko, a harsh uninviting planet. Sergei is a loyal Doctrine soldier, whose desires go against the very philosophy he believes in. In order to gather the information they need, Mike is tasked with seducing Sergei, the general's assistant. But with each secret meeting, the lines become more blurred, and the two find themselves falling for each other.

I really enjoyed this book. I was originally excited about the analogy to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, but by the end, I think it succeeded more as a space-opera narrative (a genre which I'll read avidly).
The characterizations were very compelling, and I loved the clipped, dry style; it fit perfectly with the story. Very hot he-man type sex, too, and a nasty, nasty villain in the person of the general, someone who was over-the-top evil, but in a petty, human way.

This science fiction story begins on the planet Cirokko, with Mike, who is an alliance spy. He's been assigned to report on the manoeuvres of the Doctrine forces who are attempting to establish control on the planet. The local Cirokko rebels, aided by the Alliance, are attempting to thwart this control. After spying on the general and his aide, Sergei, Mike is told to seduce Sergei in the hope it will get them vital information on the Doctrine's plans.

Oh...Sergei.....

Okay - one could say it is a short and less intense version of "Special Forces". Some reviewers even compare Sergei to Vadim.
I don't think so. Yes, there are some silimarities like the mitlitary setting, Sergei being a soldier in a system that clearly resembles the comunism.
But I couldn't find any of Vadim's cruelty or hardness in Sergei. Acutally he was mostly a young men who wanted to be loved, acknowlegded as an individual and cherished like one.

I became aware of this book when Voinov mentioned on twitter that the main character Sergei is a "version" of Vadim from Special Forces. That perked my ears and I happily ran to order it. And by "ran" I mean I used my mouse and clicked, clicked, clicked. <==so hard.
I did see some similarities between Special Forces and this book, and between Sergei and Vadim, but this was it's own book for sure.

It hardly seems possible that I only discovered the writings of Aleksandr Voinov two months ago-- but time flies when you find a good author to dig your teeth into (and that imagery calls up all kinds of naughty thoughts *gnawing on my knuckle*). First I read Special Forces, then Scorpion. Went on to Counterpunch, Transit and now, Dark Edge of Honor. DEoH was my first introduction to Rhianon Etzweiler, and I will be seeking out some of her solo works in the near future.

Overall
In a story as gritty as the planet it takes place on, Mike and Sergei struggle with their environment, their armies, and their own feelings. While this isn't a light read, it's not overwhelmingly dark either, immersing the reader in Sergei's struggle to keep hope in what seems like a doomed situation.
The plot, the beginning of which is pretty much described by the blurb, is excellent and definitely interesting, but its the characters that, through strong writing, come alive on...more

Cunningly-wrought plot. Almost gorgeous in its symmetry and opportunity for satisfying conflict. Predicament so dramatically fertile, it could easily have powered even more delicious tension for another hundred pages.
The voice in the prose was more playful than what I've seen of Mr. Voinov's catalogue before, and while I haven't yet read any of Ms. Etzweiler's work before this, I assume it is a product of their collaboration. While I prefer and very much admire Voinov's typical efficiency—as my...more

Look, to be honest, I almost gave up after the first chapter because I had no idea what was going on. In my opinion it's a very weak first chapter, BUT it gets better and better as you read after that. Just to give you an idea of how much I loved this book: I usually avoid science fiction like the plague. Before I read this book it was probably my least favourite genre ever, but I read the synopsis and it sounded awesome (and I also recently read Incursion by Aleks Voinov...more

This book felt not dissimilar in the beginning to the Special Forces by Voinov, apart from the whole 'nother planet' thing. Soldiers on opposing sides, desolate countryside and meeting in a shifty apartment in the city of hookups. It all felt so deliciously familiar.
But, the more I read and the more I wanted to enjoy it as much as I did Special Forces. Unfortunately the chemistry and intensity that Vadim and Dan brought to the page, was sorely lacking in this book. I just didn't feel the conflic...more

Sci-fi, military ...what is there not to like? I will try to be more constructive and go beyond my absolute love for these two themes, but no guarantees.
The Sci-fi element was brilliant. I'm very picky when reading books in genre I worship but that was amazing. The advanced technologies, the way people lived, behaved and thought made perfect sense and I could absolutely imagine a society like that existing. The war in Afghanistan moves into outer space.
It is hard to review a book that comes with so high expectations as this did - some disappointment was inevitable.
The first third of the book is slow. It establishes the mind set of the two main characters Sergei and Mike, but in a way that is too slow for a military science fiction. There is too much pondering and too little action and reaction. It could have been a war diary from Afghanistan with small modifications. The sudden change of pace after...more

“Did you order it to kidnap me? Or was that its own idea?” Sergei stepped closer, fighting the urge to punch the man and then check that he was all right. None of those responses made any sense.”

“Sergei remembered well how unsettled Nikishin had been by the arm and leg that day. Then, it had made him sneer inwardly, but it was difficult to maintain that derision since he began to like the man. Trust him even. And that could be dangerous enough, laws being what they were, Nikishin being who he was. Never mind that any normal individual would be revolted by Sergei’s current physical state, and justifiably so. Cyborg patchwork over mangled flesh. The pinnacle of attractive. He’d always been different, a freak. Now it was just visible. Impossible to hide.”
