"Can I see you again?"

She let out a long sigh and stared up at the sliver of crescent moon. Finally she nodded. "Don't tell anybody though or people will think you’re crazy. Only psychos talk to dead people."

Ronnie Campbell thinks she’s handling her sister Katherine’s suicide just fine. Grade 10 has started and while there are lots of whispered rumors in the hall, Ronnie t...more

Veronica Campbell, known as Ronnie to the few friends she has, finds her life crashing around her after her popular older sister, Katherine, commits suicide. Ronnie's mother is a mess, her father who had left them a year before has a new girlfriend, and Ronnie has trouble dealing with the kids in school. Not that she wants to deal with them. She doesn't want anything but to get her sister back, or at least to understand why Katherine would kill herself.

"Katherine was the popular one and what did it get her? A big smile in the yearbook and a funeral at 18."

The main reason I buy a book, as shallow as it may be, is the cover. With so many books out there, they have to be able to draw your eye. And this cover is absolutely stunning, probably one of my favorites. Now on to what's inside...

Ronnie, a teenage girl following the punk scene in the 1980s, is dealing with the aftereffects of her seemingly-perfect sister's suicide. Having to babys...more

Cage of Bones

By Leanne Beattie

This book is a deep look into the pain that death and suicide wreaks as well as the havoc on loved ones. It also deals with the systemic impact of loss and how this influences each of the family members but especially the protagonist sixteen year old Ronnie.
As someone who has lost a sister (not to suicide but to cancer) I read this book with open eyes knowing how I felt when my sister died wondering if the author could capture those feelings. I have to tell you t...more

A fantastic novel about how a girl deals with the suicidal death of her older sister. Katherine was the golden girl, honor student, cheerleader, and popular, so why did she decide to take her life? As Ronnie tries to deal with life after her sister's death, she thinks she's handling everything just fine...but she's not. She's raging and spiraling out of control, and to top it all off, she's speaking with Katherine's ghost, who doesn't really seem to help Ronnie out in putting together all the pi...more

This book is about a young woman dealing with her grief over her sister's suicide. Trigger warnings ahoy.

Cage of Bone is set in the '80s, which is a refreshing change and certainly something that helps the book to stand out. It wasn't something I expected heading in, but was a pleasant surprise. Once I got past the sense of "oh hey, this is different!", though, I wondered why Beattie had made the decision to set the book when she did. The story could have happened in any time period. Veronica ma...more

Once I started this book I couldn't stop reading until the end. A fairly short read but a very emotional one.
You can kind of guess what happened to Katherine to make her commit suicide but a brief chapter explaining more would have been good.
A very good read!

A teenage girl handles the loss of her idolized elder sister in a predictable journey.

Interesting story but left me with some unanswered questions.

Leanne Beattie takes us back to the eighties to visit the pain of a sister left behind when her accomplished, poised older sister takes her life. An alcoholic mother, and a father busy with his new life, cannot offer Ronnie the support she needs to deal with golden girl Catherine's death, especially when Ronnie begins to discover the reasons behind her sister's gruesome suicide.

Leanne's writing is polished and crisp, and Cage of Bone well edited and formatted; this short novel is an pleasant rea...more
