Set in Ireland, the first book of a trilogy featuring the daughters of Tommy Concannon. Feisty Maggie Concannon is the first born and the reason for the acrimonious marriage between her parents. Whilst her father lavished love and affection on Maggie, her mother blamed her for having to give up her career and marry a farmer with grandiose dreams that never went anywhere.

Having apprenticed in Venice to learn the art of glass-blowing, Maggie's creations caught the eye of rich, success...more

When I read and re-read a book, it's almost always going to get a 5 or 4 star rating, or else why re-read? Born in Fire is the first of a trilogy and unlike some trilogies, you have to have 2 and 3 close at hand as soon as you finish Born in Fire because the unfolding family story is that enthralling. Maggie has a dreadful relationship with her hardened, mean-spirited, caustic of tongue and tone mother and watching them dance around each other rings so true. It's at times heart-breaking. Adultho...more

I loved reading about Maggie and her entertaining characteristics and temperament.

Maggie is an artist who creates glass sculptures. She lives in a small village in western Ireland. Rogan is a wealthy Gallery owner in Dublin. He wants to represent her work. He calls her repeatedly but she never answers her phone. He has to travel there just to be able to talk to her. After he signs her, he has to send telegraphs to her because she still doesn’t answer her phone. He views her as...more

I like this triology by Nora Roberts for exactly what it is: a great summer read. I have to admit a fondness for anything set in Ireland and this triology takes place in a small town in western Ireland. The protagonists of all three books in this series are sisters. Yes, they are romance stories, so of course, there is love that is troubled but those troubles will be overcome. What I like about this trilogy though is that the love story takes a back seat to the relationship between the sister...more

Nora Roberts is an excellent writer and Born in Fire is a good book, well worth reading. I love the way she describes people in a fashion that doesn’t seem cliché and leaves the reader with a full feel for the emotions each character is experiencing. This book was published in 1994, so it has been around for awhile, but it doesn't have a dated feel to it. Maggie Concannon, the main character, is a glass artist who falls in love with Rogan, a business man who owns art galleries and wants to re...more

Ok, I loved Twilight, so obviously I am willing to sacrifice a lot of quality for some PG-rated romance. My expectations for an adult romance genre book, then, is for at least something more gripping than Twilight.

I felt zero emotion coming from this book. The characters were boring cardboard cut-outs, plot barely existed, and the romance was not compelling. One of my biggest pet peeves is perspective switching to give the reader insight into every character's mind, I like a little ...more

this is the book that got me addicted to Nora. i love the glass blowing background and her terrible background with her mother, and how much of a daddy's girl she is. she's flawed, she's a little bit insane, a lot brilliant and so emotionally scarred that i wanted to root for her from the instant i opened the book.

and i gotta say, Rogan is so the prototype for Roarke in the ID series. lol that makes me love him just a little bit more.

even though this book is from the mid...more

Wellll, okay, so I read this last night between two and five AM because I was up laboriously trying to breathe through a stuffed nose.
And it's a pretty good book for that sort of occasion. I enjoyed the glassblowing parts, and mostly people behaved in ways that kind of made sense.
The only problem I had was that the 'hero' was always ordering the heroine around even though she quite reasonably explained to him that HI, she has an ARTISTIC TEMPERAMENT so she's not going to just sho...more

I have such an appreciation for {author: Nora Roberts] writing. I think she does such an amazing job integrating a story plot with character development. Even in reading this short book I became invested in the characters and want to know more about them.

I am always a little embarrassed to admit that I like Nora Roberts as she is best know for "Romance" novels, but while many of these books are about a love connection between characters (and one that is easy to see comi...more

I am not going to review every Nora Roberts book that I have read in the past because she is quite prolific and it would get redundant and I honestly cannot remember all the plots. I think someone finds someone else attractive but at least one cannot admit it so there is sexual tension, then lots of sex, and then they live happily ever after? Sometimes there is some magic , a family legacy, or a mystery. Certainly not great works of literature (however still 100% better than “the grapes of wra...more

The "Born In" trilogy was a set I had purchased awhile back when I was really thrilled with Nora Roberts. For awhile, I was reading her work and was unimpressed. This story has brought back the spark I once had for her stories.

What I liked about the story was the relationships between Maggie and Rogan, as well as Maggie and her Mom. They were complex and yet simple in their own way. Maggie was so focused on her fear of what passionate relationships could evolve into because o...more

If this is the best of romance then I don't think I'll be exploring much more of the genre. The story line is fairly straightforward and there isn't much reading in between the lines, suspense, or mystery. A story of bruised daughters with men issues stemming from a dysfunctional parentage, Roberts paints a fairy typical romance. Her writing style is entertaining nonetheless, allowing for an pseudo-pleasant read. I'd like to think it was perhaps too short for character development but I think th...more

Some books you read with your brain and some books you read with your ovaries - this one's the latter!

It's hard to beat Nora Roberts for a light, undemanding, but satisfying read. She combines likeable characters, beautiful settings and trustworthy formulaic plots. She also likes to write trilogies which seems to be the exact number of light, frothy books you need to recharge your brain and move back onto heavier stuff <g>.

Born in Fire has a wonderful fiesty red-hea...more

My husband actually bought this book (along with the other three in this series) for me for Christmas. I love Nora Roberts books so I figured it would be good, at least entertaining - all of her stuff usualy is. As I got into it I really began to enjoy the scenery that was described and it all but reinforced my deep, life long desire to visit Ireland (one of these days it will happen). I was hooked within just the first few chapters! It really is a typical Nora Roberts book, has the same happy e...more

It was a sweet book with lots of funny dialog. Nora Robert´s writing about the problems that can occur in a love story between the rich and not so rich . So the bickering between Maggie and Rogan seemed real. She was very temperamental and he very bossy (not my favorite treat) and sure of him self. I didn´t get the beatific sister though. Is there really people that goes to such length to care for such a fretful, nagging and angry person as Maggie's mother?
And the hasty marriage between t...more

Yes I like Nora Roberts and cheesy romance novels, and I'm not afraid to admit it!

I've read lots of her series, but this trilogy is one of my favorites. Probably because it involves Ireland. :-)

War mal neugierig. Dachte ich nehme mal eines der geschätzten 800 Bücher von N. Roberts, das sich noch am interessantesten und nicht allzu kitschig (harhar, as if) anhört. Erwartete Schlimmes. Bekam noch Schlimmeres.
Was ein Schund!

Maggie Concannon is a talented artist specialized in glass art, whose work is much more than mere objects of beauty but reflection of her true nature. After the death of her father, Maggie struggles to help her sister in maintaining her careless mother. Then come one man and swivel her life upside down and now she most face her obscure pass and learn how to deal with it.

Born in fire was well-written and well sculptured that I found myself immersed and deeply engaged with the characters...more

This started out a little slow for me… (slight spoiler).. Maggie’s father dies right at the beginning, and the foreshadowing is as noticeable as a neon sign. That turned me off a bit. But once you get into it, you get what you’re looking for in a Nora Roberts tale: strong characters in a beautiful setting. Rogan comes off as the more likeable character, but you do warm up to Maggie over time, especially when you realize what her childhood must have been like. The details about the glass blowin...more

On the whole I liked this book. To some degree I see bits of Eve & Roarke from her In Death series in Maggie and Rogan. Maggie is strong and opinionated but still desperately insecure in some ways. Unlike Eve, Maggie doesn't have much to soften her sharp edges and in the end I didn't like her much. Rogan is smart and charming and always gets his way. Excellent qualities in a romantic lead. But since I didn't care much for Maggie, I didn't "get" the romance.

As far as the plo...more

Nora Roberts never disappoints me. Never. I love the way she tell her story, the characters she creates, the settings of her stories... in short I love everything.

Set in Ireland, Born in Fire tells a story of Margaret Mary Concannon, a woman who grows up without her mother's love and affection. In this first book, Roberts gives glimpses of reason as to why Maggie's mother, Maeve, seems to despise her first child.

It's interesting, really, as Roberts offers the insights of a gl...more

[audio] First in the Born In / Concannon Sisters trilogy, this is a classic Nora Roberts romance. The appeal of this title lies in the details of the art of glass blowing, the descriptions of society gala events (covered with humor, versus the minute details of Barbara Taylor Bradford) and the Irish location. Fiacre Douglas's narration marvelously added to the strong sense of place - I often have difficulty with men narrating females but Douglas does a fine job. Enjoyable light series reading. F...more

Book 1 of my all time favorite trilogy. Nobody compares to Nora Roberts when it comes to series. She takes her characters, locations, and story lines to a much higher level, in my opinion, than other authors do.

The setting is Ireland. There's Maggie, a strong willed and determined artist, Rogan a wealthy gallery owner who is determined to have Maggie and her art. Throw in a sweet, innocent sister, and bitter Mother, and you've got the beginning of a great series.

I need to go to Ireland. This series by Roberts takes place in Clare County in the West of Ireland, and this first book focuses on Maggie Concannon and Rogan Sweeney. Maggie lives in the country and Rogan lives in the big city. She is fiery and doesn't think about money, Rogan is reserved and has lived in luxury his entire life. Aside from the romance, which is beautiful, there are issues between the Concannon family that are really well developed. It was a typical Roberts book, but I absolutely...more

Another enjoyable story. I like the ones set in Ireland. She really gets the musical quality of the accent and rhythms of the language. The character of Maggie and her life was at times a little too close to home which made it a difficult read, at times.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the glass blowing and the beauty of the objects she created.

But I found the romance between Rogan and Maggie a little too conflicted to imagine it would be a successful relationship. This made...more

Born in Fire is the story of Maggie, the eldest Concannon sister, who was born in the passion of her parents - before it cooled down and freezed off.

Maggie Concannon is a talented glass artist in Clare, and when her father dies of aneurysm in the middle of a storm only with Maggie to say his final goodbye to, Maggie is determined to keep her last promise to him: Take care of her sister Brianna and her mother who bitterly hates her life, and to follow her dream.

I just don't know what exactly makes me love and adore this author so much but I can't seem to be able to do otherwise. I just feel so exhilarated while reading her books, which is funny because for too long I was reluctant to pick one of them as everybody else seemed to crave her work so badly. For some reason I got into my head that I wouldn't be as fascinated with her as everybody else seemed to be and it took me way too long to discover how mistaken I was. I simply can't stop reading her boo...more
