I just read this book, some 8 years after publication. Fatwa is a very interesting book, a quick and easy read, that really underscores the difference between the Western and the Middle Eastern cultures.
Although I was dismayed at the impulsive decisions Jacky made on her path to a quick marriage with her handsome Egyptian, she did a good job of portraying that youthful, naive, excitement of falling in love with a tall dark stranger in an exotic land; a scenario that any young girl who believes...more

The book opens with Jacky trying to escape from Egypt with her two children, T told myself that I shouldn't have given up the habit of reading the end before really starting to read the book itself but somehow I felt that it kills the book if you read the end, and so very rightly for this book, this book runs like a suspense thriller... Jacky is physically abused by her husband, she doesn't want to escape alone leaving back her two daughters, there are other book were I have read about mothers a...more

I found this a really interesting book and certainly one that had me turning those pages; the very nature of the content and the fact it’s a true story is the books forward momentum.

The story begins in 1979 when Jacky goes on holiday to Egypt with her then boyfriend whom she gets separated from when they try to get off a bus in Cairo. Jacky finds herself alone, with a twisted ankle, in a residential area and is picked up by two young Egyptian men who escort her into the nearest appartment where...more

The moral of the book is don't rush into a marriage - and even more so when they are a foreigner.

The book highlights the difficulties of life in Egypt and the culture shock for those of us from the UK where we take so much for granted.

This is a true story about a woman who goes to Egypt on a vacation, falls in love with a handsome man and marries him without really knowing him and the culture in Egypt. He abuses her for 6years, but she can't leave because of their two daughters. She doesn't want to leave them behind.
It's a similar story with "Not without my daughter" and I think it's good that stories like these are made into books to warn other women and prevent that they will make the same mistakes and turn their lives and...more

The minute I picked this book up I was hooked! I stayed up late into the night reading and would have stayed up all night if I didn't have kids to get up for school. This is one of the best books I have read in a while.
In the begining I was a little judgmental toward Jacky's decisions. She married someone she hardly knows, left behind everything familiar to her, and went to live in a culture she knew nothing about. After a while though I began to understand why she had agreed to marry him. I cou...more

I could not put this book down!! Now I remember why I enjoy reading this type of memoir. The downgrading and abuse of women in Muslim countries, all due to religion, really makes my blood boil!! NO ONE has the right to treat another human being in such a manner I DON'T care who you are OR who you think you are!! This woman has to be one of the bravest women I've ever read about. Knowing that she must live the rest of her life looking over her shoulder due to this monster and his abuse of his rel...more

Jacky married in Cairo. She had two kids. Her husband first started beating her, then the oldest of the children. Jacky spent ONE YEAR saving $50 and set out with her two little girls to escape across the desert from Egypt to Isreal. This is a real page turner and will not read a more exciting book.

Engrossing read throughout, glued to each page and found this book very hard to put down!

A true story of one womans courage and determination to escape with her children from a life in a differant country which was far from the fairytale she expected it to be. Empowering story of a family who still are having to look over their shoulder to this day.
Aimee Georgeson
Very easy to read, sadly tells a very common story of abuse. Proud Jacky found the inner strength & courage she needed to escape. Oppression & abuse of woman in any country is dispicable. Religion & culture aside, Omar followed typical patterns of a controlling, violent man.

This is heart breaking, but this lady had the courage and strength to endure and in the end escape with her kids, this is a must read will keep you on the edge of your seat. BRAVO

Oh, patriarchy infuriates me--although that was not all of the problems that "Jacky" faced. I don't understand "man's inhumanity to [wo:]man"! Quick read.

See how instant love can do such damage..... Didn't knew such a brutal world exist on earth until reading this book... Thanks Jacky. Great job.!!!

I actually read this in Dutch. Like all books I've read on the subject of forced marriages, I thought this one was good. It was a page-turner and all the while I was rooting for the lead of the book.

I read this book when I was ten, and even then I thought it was good. So try to imagine how amazing it was.
