My first Nora Roberts novel...truly a milestone.

In "Who's Afraid of Happy Endings?" there's a clip of Nora Roberts describing an encounter with a woman who, upon learning Roberts' identity, said "Oh, you write that smut." Nora's response? "No, I do not write smut. What the hell is wrong with you?"

My instant response was to think Lady, lighten up -- how can you write romance and still be that easily offended? My response now, after reading one of her novels, is...yeah, she's still too easily offe...more

Holy 80′s!…Ok, so the book was originally published in 1991 but really, we’re splitting hairs. Eve and Julia walk around in coral colored silk jackets and elegant leisure pajamas. And the trainer Fritz…OMG this quote had me cracking up!

“Standing beside Eve as she lay on a weight bench doing leg curls was Mr. Muscle…He had to be nearly seven feet – a Nordic god whose bronze body bulged out of an incredibly brief unitard.”

Seriously?!…Unitard?!…Sexy?!…

Only in the 80′s (-ish) could this be possible....more

"Is love worth it?"

"It's worth everything. I wouldn't waste a day, not an hour, not a moment. Take what you want, and damn caution. Or the biggest regret you'll have at the end of your life is wasted time."

When Julia Summers is asked by wildly famous and legendary Hollywood actress Eve Benedict to write her biography, she agrees but has no idea what she is getting herself into. Certainly not the amount of people in Eve's life that do not want the book written. Certainly not the growing friendshi...more

I gave this book three stars because I felt like there wasn't very much development leading up to Eve's killer. Obviously someone wanted the secrets kept just that - secrets - enough to kill for them. However, there were a couple of things that made me angry, (okay, okay, I understand that this book was published nearly two decades ago, but really?!) first, how Paul seemed to be verging on the edge of killing Julia himself at some moments, and second, there is no way a woman nearly in her sevent...more

The key characters are Eve Benedict, a famous movie goddess, Julia Summers, a biographer, and Paul Winthrop, Eve's handsome stepson. Alot of other movie stars are involved. Who plots against Eve, disliking the fact about her writing out her biography.
Eve Benedict who is now in retirement, decides to write a biography about her and the things she did and went through in order to get the top of Hollywood. She planned on spilling every detail, leaving nothing out, including the people wh...more

Two stars because I felt like reading it again after I read it the first time. I found this one oddly compelling despite its flaws. It was overlong and spent a lot of time introducing a plethora of characters who just seemed to be there to clutter up the suspects list.

There was a lot of old Hollywood glamour in this book and I think I enjoyed that the most about it: the aging leading lady who has held her appeal all these years, illicit affairs, organized crime, general betrayal all made for a s...more

Sporadic objectionable language - detracted from the story which was pretty good. Read on the plane (captive audience) It was that or the pathetic movie or pay for TV :(

What can I say? I'm a sucker for old hollywood and headstrong beautiful women. Nora Roberts wrote a breathtaking story of a glamorous actress who by the end of her life wanted to right all of her wrongs. She brought her long lost daughter to her home, into her world to write her biography. The twist? her daughter Julia didn't know Eve was her biological mother, as she was given up for adoption as a newborn. This book has so many twists and shocked me to the core to the point I slapped my hands t...more

This is certainly not Roberts' best one. The storyline is totally predictable. In fact I anticipated the illegitimacy of Julia and never empathised or sympathised with Eve. Well, she could have still become a star minus some of the sleaze!

Furthermor Roberts converts Paul, Julia and Eve into sex machines; thereby robbing them of their humaneness. I hate her treatment of characters and her repetitive storyline. does she have anything else but truckloads of casual and unsafe sex to offer? Totally di...more

"I’m serious." Nina set the cup on the dressing table, among Eve’s lotions and creams. The scent of the room was pure female, not floral or fussy, but mysterious and erotic. "You know—well, I’ve already told you how I feel. And now … Anthony Kincade’s reaction the other night really worried me."

"Tony’s not worth a moment’s worry." She patted Nina’s hand before picking up her tea. "He’s slime," she said mildly, drawing in the subtle scent and taste of jasmine. "And it’s more than past time someon

One of the things I've noticed going back and re-reading these older Nora Roberts books is how she's evolved her female characters. In these older books the women are all not looking for any sort of relationship and then here comes this irresistible man who nearly forces himself on them and they fall in love two days later. There are some exceptions to this, but this one, Genuine Lies, was probably the worst offender.

Maybe it didn't help that I didn't care for any of the characters and the book...more

I have always enjoyed reading Nora Roberts. She is definitely has a very strong voice as a writer and it is always great to read her books.

Julia Summers travels across the country with her son to write a biography of a movie goddess, Eve. Eve decided she wanted her story told and all the lies from her past to be revealed, and handpicks Julia out of the crowd of writers. Their relationship begins all business, but slowly over time they begin to develop a more personal relationship as well. Throu...more

Acabei.

Book Description: New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts weaves scandal, celebrity secrets, and murder into an explosive novel of Hollywood almost too wicked not to be true: the story of a legendary actress who knows too much—and the woman she’s chosen to reveal it all….

Eve Benedict is the kind of subject who could make any biographer’s career. Last of the movie goddesses, she has two Oscars, four ex-husbands, and a legion of lovers, both famous and infamous. Now she is ready to write a...more

This was definitely a great read for me. I bought this at a book sale and it was a quick-scan, quick-buy moment for me because I was with my friends. I read Sacred Sins before reading this book and that was an okay read for me. But this is absolutely amazing! Genius!

Although I have to admit it was a bit dark for me, darker than the other Nora Robert's I've read, I have to say I enjoyed reading until the end. I had a bit of a hunch who the killer was which disappointed me a little bit but eith...more

Adorei do princípio ao fim e conseguiu verdadeiramente surpreender-me.

Primeiro foi o...more

This is my first Nora Roberts`s...And last one, I think..The book was okay, but the settings and styles were a bit too dull for my taste. It was overelaborate in certain parts, and it has this weird grandeur style that I find a bit tedious to read..A reason why I only read this before sleeping and why it took me some time to finish it off..

Anyway, this story is about Hollywood`s finest Superstar ,bar Marilyn Monroe`s (if not better) , Eve Benedict. Her knowledge of famous people`s dark secrets a...more

This Roberts' book was very well done, and I would have given it 4 stars, but I'll get into why in a little bit. The pretense of the book is that the main character, Julia, is asked by one of Hollywood's Greatest Stars who has ever lived (Eve Benedict) to write her Authorized Biography. She moves her and her son out to LA and stays in the guest house while the book is in progress. At the very beginning of the book, the prologue tells you the Eve has been murdered, and Julia is on trial for it. S...more

I just finished my second read of this book and have upgraded it to 4 stars. It has suspense, death, and romance in this entertaining read. This story, which is about biographer of a Hollywood legend, had many twists and turns throughout the story. With a character going over 50 years of Hollywood stardom, it was proven interesting. Roberts depicted a believable character, who loved only one man she couldn’t have and had liaisons and marriages galore. All of the characters are believable from th...more

Wow. This was not the first Nora Roberts book to make me cry, but it was definitely the one that made me cry the hardest. I don't think Nora gets enough credit...because she is a "romance" writer, she gets painted into a corner as far as writing abilities go. However, as a creator of characters, she is a master, and this book was no different. What I loved about this one was that she created so MANY different characters...at least 20 with detailed backstories that were all cleverly interlinked.....more

So this book is kind of dated, saw it on bookshelf at home, and decide wat the hell. I actually enjoyed it. It's my first book by Nora Roberts, and I must say it was way better than I was expecting. Yes its a lil bit dated (they described a PC as modern technology) but i did enjoy the plot, and all the other parts in between. I really liked the characters even the villains (and there were a lot of them) Roberts did a good job of describing them and making good character portraits and the story k...more

It wasn't bad, but I had a number of problems with it. The book wants to be a thriller, and does a decent job and the beginning and end, but the middle is straight cheezy romance for me. She used "sleek", "slick", and "silky" repeatedly, to the point where I was feeling greasy. It's dated. It didn't have to be as dated as she made it (VCRs galore! And brightly colored numbers with shoulder clips or something). In that middle part was a convention used multiple times where she'd summarily say "I...more

Eleanor Marie Robertson was born on October 10, 1950 in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. She was the youngest of five children, also the only girl, of a marriage with Irish ancestors. Her family were avid readers, so books were always important in her life. She attended a Catholic school and credits the nuns with instilling in her a sense of discipline. During her...more

“Eve rose stiffly when he strode out of the house. In silence, she watched Julia look after him. "The male ego," Eve murmured as she crossed the room to put an arm around Julia's shoulders. "It's a huge and fragile thing. I always envision it as an enormous penis made of thin glass.” 37 likes
