In this collection of twenty-eight “riotously funny and outrageously honest” true-life tales, author Joni B. Cole manage to mingle low moments with high comedy; and social awkwardness with social observation.

The title essay was inspired when the author went to the bookstore and noticed all the bestsellers about adorably naughty dogs. At first resentful of these other write...more

The first thing you need to know is that this is not a book about dogs – bad, good, or otherwise. Another Bad-Dog Book is merely the title of the first story in the book. Rather, it is a collection of stories from the author's life that are fundamentally about how, as we stumble through it, life teaches us what is truly important; or as the subtitle says – Tales of Life, Love, and Neurotic Human Behavior. These are tales of things as mundane as ranting about a local eyesore and as sublime as the...more

“What kind of computer is it?” my computer guy asks. “A laptop,” I reply impatiently. Even I know that much.
My computer guy is really nice, but sometimes I get the feeling he’s trying to avoid me…he insists I’d be better off calling the company’s technical support center. Then he hangs up…I’d rather phone my mother-in-law and listen to her retell the story of how she saved $1.25 on a box of fire logs by going to four different malls.
Eleven-year-old hormones are to blame…radical mood s...more

At work, I read manuscripts on my lunch break and (shhhhh) while waiting for searches to run on slow databases. I had to quickly take Another Bad-Dog Book out of this rotation because by PAGE TWO I was snickering so uncontrollably it was clear that I was not working on chargebacks because never, in the history of ever, has a chargeback made someone LOL so badly.

Joni B. Cole is a seriously funny woman. She's the kind of person you want sitting next to you in the back row at a workshop, or the fri...more

oni B. Cole is the person you want to be sitting next to whispering snarky comments and witty observations about the people around you. In this collect of essays about adopting the perfect dog and coming to grips with the whole aging thing, she discovers that she is not quite perfect and therefore needs a dog that will match her uniqueness - oh, and maybe get a book out of the deal. She find her match in Eli (aka E Pie Pie), an adorable misfit of a breed called a Chihuahua Bat. Cole was nominate...more

What a humorous and heartwarming collection of essays! Joni B. Cole not only knows our four-legged friends well, she also knows the idiosyncrasies of humans, and she brings her delightful observations to
us with honesty, insight and spirit. Don't miss this fabulous book.

Funny, funny, funny. I got an advance reader copy and LOVED this book. So relatable and while I found myself laughing out loud at many of these essays, many were equally moving and all too human. Read this book! Then give it to ALL of your girlfriends.
I was sent a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I was sure what to expect from this book, but the blurb sounded funny and I agreed to read it. It's by no way my usual book, but I've found my tastes have been expanding lately and so I settled down to enjoy.
This book is 28 short essays about life experiences. From the adoption of a naughty puppy, to kids birthdays, to business talks. Cole has a great mix of humour and story telling.

To me, books containing many separate essays are like listening to a child who jumps topic so fast I find the need to excuse myself for a few minutes to collect my thoughts. The books are hard to get through quickly because of this need to ruminate on the one just read before jumping to another topic, especially if they aren't laugh-out-loud coffee-through-the-nose funny.

That being said, I liked this book. Some of the essays were fun...more
WARNING: Use caution when reading this book in public. Why? You know that embarassing snort-laugh you avoid doing, the half snort half laugh? Yeah, I did that through most of this book.

I was lucky enough to win a copy of this book on Goodreads, and Joni B. Cole has put together a great collection, slices of life. All of those mean, snarky, jealous, nasty comments we all won't admit to thinking? Yep, she thinks them, and she writes them down in all of their hilarity. No one is immune to her criti...more
Another Bad Dog book is one of the funniest books I have read. I kept laughing and enjoying myself that several times I had to remind myself that this was a memoir, non-fiction book. Not that this is a bad thing but usually I am very selective on these types of books that I read. Usually, for some reason I find reading about other people’s lives to be boring or really it is just the way it is presented in the book. It reads more like a text book. I found this was not the case with Another Bad Do...more

“I just came from the dentist and had two cavities filled and three shots to numb my mouth. I read the book between torture treatments. At least I had something to make me laugh.”

Many people write books about dogs so why shouldn’t this author tell the world about her bad or incorrigible dog too. Everyone thinks their dog is the best, cutest and funniest so why not share her own stories about her dog and many other true life experienc...more

From the pains of raising a surly tween, to coping with the realities of midlife, to dealing with eccentric parents, this book is filled with an array of funny and outrageously honest stories about life, love and neurotic behavior.

I thoroughly enjoyed each and every chapter in this book. Joni has a knack for turning random situations – like sitting in the nosebleeds at an American Idol concert – into hilarious and meaningful life lessons. After reading this book, I felt like I just spent a rela...more

As another review pointed out this book has nothing to do with dogs, however the author does love dogs. While I did not expect the book to be about dogs for me it lacked something. I knew that book was just short stories about life in general but I really expected them to be more funny. I did smile at a few but never really just laughed out loud at any of the stories.
I do plan to read her Diaries books because they do sound very interesting tho and her writing is good I just didn't find the boo...more

An American Bulldog smoking a cigar is on the cover of Joni B. Cole’s fifth book, ANOTHER BAD DOG BOOK – Tales of Life, Love and Neurotic Human Behavior, and lucky me, I got to review it. It’s a compilation of 28 essays, and even before I read one of them, I fell in love with this book. With that cover, how can I resist? I think we’ve established that I’m a dog fanatic!

I won this book from a contest on Goodreads,

I don't remember being so entertained with such wit in a book as much as "Another Bad Dog Book" by Joni Cole. Proof being, I read it in one sitting only to be interrupted by my husband who kept asking me, "Are we ever going to eat today?" (Meals can be so bothersome when you're in the midst of a good book!) I have always been a mystery/thriller buff, but Joni Cole has steered me into a whole new category! Anyone who feels the least bit 'down', please r...more

In Joni B Cole's new book "For Every Bad Dog, There's A Very Good Story" the Pushcart Prize Nominee adopts a dog in her quest for youth. Her stories aren't just about her dog, E Pie Pie, but also the author's acceptance of her age. Through quirky humor and keen observations she learns that age is simply a number and life's experiences and expectancies are different for everyone. Her stories of botched home spray on tans and doubtful thoughts concethnic her marriage to her husband will be sure to...more

Joni Cole is the marvelously witty writing teacher, award nominee, speaker and author of Another Bad Dog Book. First, let me make it clear that this is not a book about dogs. This is a collection of heartfelt essays about true-life tales.

Only Joni could turn life's trying, often depressing, moments into amusing and entertaining anecdotes. You'll find yourself commiserating and laughing out-loud as you turn the pages and still want more at the end.

I loved this book! It's so beautifully written, and so full of insight and compassion. With humor and style, Joni illuminates her own foibles and vulnerabilities, and in so doing also illuminates our own.

I laughed through many of the stories, but I also felt deeply touched. Through exposing and coming to terms with her own secret insecurities, anger, and sadness, Joni taught me to love and accept myself a little better. Please don't miss this book!
I feel so lucky and privileged to have had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book! Joni Cole is not only hilarious but insightful, engaging, and makes you want to sip coffee all day long as she relates her stories to you. Another Bad-Dog Book made me laugh out loud on the subway and having just recently finished reading Tina Fey's Bossypants that is quite an impressive feat!
Another Bad Dog Book is chick lit and awesome writing all wrapped up in one. It is also one of the funniest books I’ve ever read, and at times really moving. This book would make a great read whenever you need a pick up, or a break, or just want to feel in good company, and laugh your face off. It’s also the perfect gift for a girlfriend, sister, mom… Buy it! You’ll be so so so glad you did!
I enjoyed this book, because I felt like I connected with the author. Some readers will think the author of this book is whiny; I felt that way while reading the first half of the book. However, as the book progressed I felt that the author shared many stories in which she was critical of her own behavior. This book was real, and I loved that about it.
Written with heart and laugh out loud humor, this book isn't so much about the author's dog as it more of a memoir. There are moments when you cringe for Joni and others where you laugh with her. By the end of the book you feel as if you've known her forever. This book is a hilarious and a fun, easy read!
Loaded with humor and stories that never gets old I enjoyed this book it's very engaging, spontaneous and really funny! a great way to start and end the day with a couple of hearty laughs.

I won and received this book for free thru Goodreads First reads.Thank you very much!
When I first read about this book on another blogger's site I expected something along the lines of lighter Erma Bombeck with a canine in the lead, giving a family's day-to-day a new dimension and teaching them a thing or two about themselves in the process. I got something different - an incredibly sincere and intimate collection of essays about a life that is often unglamorous and riddled with insecurities but is held together by love, family and friends.

Another Bad-Dog Book – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of A Book and A Dish, Stir, Laugh, Repeat and Think With Your Taste Buds

‘I had found myself up, thinking about all the ways my husband and I weren’t best friends: how we had nothing in common (children don’t count), and how we were going to end up in just a few short years like so many other empty nesters who look at each other across the middle cushion of their corduroy couch and think, Wow. What now? Why am I with this person? I hate co...more
If you are expecting or, in my case, dreading another sad but ultimately bittersweet memoir of canine/human interaction along the lines of Marley and Me, this book is not that book. If you are struggling with the competing demands of work, marriage and parenthood, and can see the humor and pathos in it, then you have found your new best friend.

The collection kicks off with the title essay, in which Cole plans her next best-seller capitalizing on the current wave of popular books about difficult...more
Another Bad-Dog book is a story about Joni herself. It wasn't what I was expecting at all in that I truly did expect another bad dog book. What I got was a story of real human experiences and Joni is very, very up front about her very human flaws, so much so that I felt like she was overtly hard on herself so many times that I got discouraged reading this book. There were times where I felt like I wasn't hearing all of the story or all of her feelings on things and that things were in the book b...more

I love dogs, and I love Joni's book. I think the fact that she was born in the Chinese Year of the Dog kinda says it all. [Full disclosure: I'm a Monkey.] This is Dog as Metaphor; Dog is God spelled backwards; the importance of having a dog in your life because it pretty much defines everything and everyone in the family. I can't imagine what it's like for a family without a dog to anchor human behavior, and Joni explores this subject from a hundred, or maybe a thousand, different perspectives....more
Contrary to what the title might lead you to believe, this book isn’t actually about dogs. The dog (he’s very cute, by the way) makes a couple of appearances, but he isn’t the main attraction. Instead, Another Bad-Dog Book contains essays on a huge range of topics: parenting, writing, public speaking, living in Vermont, marriage, Facebook, beauty, New Year’s resolutions, American Idol, family, pets, growing up, and more. In essays that range from humorous to reflective to sarcastic, Joni B. Cole...more

I am the audio-book narrator for "Another Bad Dog Book: Tales of Life, Love, and Neurotic Human Behavior" When I was first presented with the project I honestly never read the book.
