Oh look! It's another Dr. Seuss title (just like The Lorax) that I'm going to find well-nigh impossible to review! Such was my thought, a few weeks back, when adding How the Grinch Stole Christmas to my goodreads shelves... And sure enough, confronted by my utter inability to muster even one coherent sentence to describe it, let alone my feelings about it, I deleted it from those shelves again. And then subsequently added it, and deleted it a second time. Third time lucky, as the saying goes, so

Whenever someone asks me if I celebrate Christmas and I'm about to be catty and say that I don't because I'm not a Christian, I wish an alert would sound in my ear and warn me not to be like Grinch. "Don't steal Christmas, Yulia. Don't do it!"

If your only knowledge of this story is through film (either animated or live-action) you must . . .MUST . . . run out and read the actual, original text. Seuss's work is so visual and his playful, inventive language is so captivating that filmmakers (even when Seuss is directly involved as in the Boris Karloff-Voiced Grinch) can't help but pad his work with long passages devoted to interesting drawings of wackily-named who-toys.

This book is one of my two holiday traditional reads (the other being “The Firflake: A Christmas Story” by my good friend, Anthony Cardno (in fact, I urge you to go to Amazon or Barnes & Noble—or even better, your local independent bookseller, and pick yourself up a copy or six). Unfortunately, this year, I just couldn’t get in the mood to read “The Firflake” this year (just too much depression), so “The Grinch” had to be it this year.

This is a fantastic book written by Dr Seuss about a town called who-ville where everyone loves christmas except for the Grinch. The Grinch hated christmas because it was believed that his heart was two sizes to small. He decided that he would need to stop christmas from coming and he dressed up as santa and went to who-ville. He removed all of the christmas presents and the decorations and the christmas tree and when a little girl called cindy-lou found him taking everything from her house the

This wasn't one of those books that I read a long time ago and forgot to add to my shelves. I literally read this book for the first time today. Don't get me wrong, I knew the story. Who doesn't? But it was from movies and word of mouth. I hadn't actually read the honest-to-God book. Which apparently -according to my friends- is a crime against humanity. I even got assassinated by my friend. (Long story short- We have an book nerd assassins club to take out people we don't like, especially the p

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is about a creature named the Grinch. He lives in a cave on a moutain (MT. Crumpit) with his dog, Max. Mt. Crumpit is located north of a little town called Whoville. The book begins with the Grinch standing outside of his cave looking down at Whoville. He expresses his hate of Christmas. He explains that he can't stand when the Whos (citizens of Whoville) make noise when they play wih their presents, feast on "roast beast", and most of all, when they join

The Grinch didn't steal my Christmas. I had one of my "I hate everybody I'm related to except for the twin who is a lot like me" moods today (it was understandable as they are assholes. They deserved it and I did not). Everything breaks around me except for hearts long drawn out sigh. The day was already shaping up to one of those days that could only be improved by the ground opening up and swallowing me hole. Coming home to find vehicles of people I would rather not see again? Where

Here's a classic children's story that has been adored for over half a century; a tale of an unpleasant guy who learns an important lesson at Christmastime and becomes a sweeter person. It's basically Dickens' A Christmas Carol, delivered in a shorter time frame, with illustrations and rhyming lines.
The Whos are the good guys in this story, but they're also the antagonists, since they represent everything the main character detests. They like food and presents and company, bu More...

"The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! / Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason." Dr. Seuss's small-hearted Grinch ranks right up there with Scrooge when it comes to the crankiest, scowling holiday grumps of all time. For 53 years, the Grinch has lived in a cave on the side of a mountain, looming above the Whos in Whoville. The noisy holiday preparations and infernal singing of the happy little citizens below annoy him to no end. The Grinch decides t

Somewhere north of Who-ville lived a small hearted Grinch who HATED christmas, but everyone who lived in Who-ville loved it a lot! Why did he hate christmas, no one quite knows.. but he does, and this time he HAD to stop this season! He was tired of the little who kids running for their toys and eating their fabulous meal, they would surely enjoy their 'Who-roast-BEAST' which the Grinch could not stand! The singing, ah the singing, the Grinch was adamant to stop the singing. How did he stop Chri

Another timeless book by Dr. Seuss. I would read this book during the Christmas season. I would also allow the students to watch the cartoon version of this book. Then students could compare and contrast between the movie and the book.
Also, the book talks about emotions and how things makes a person feels. Students will learn how to appropriately express their emotions. Students could write about if they knew someone like the Grinch, how would they welcome him and make him feel bette More...

How the Grinch stole Christmas by Dr. Suess is an all-time classic! It is about the Grinch, the people of Who-ville, and the Grinch’s dog, max. The story is about how much the Grinch hates Christmas. He hates it so much he attempts to take Christmas away from the people of Who-ville. So he dresses max, his dog, into an reindeer and builds a sleigh, then rides into the city and takes the all food, presents, ect. In the end when he heard all the people of Who-ville cries, his heart gre More...

I love this book. It is one of my favorite Christmas stories of all time. This book is about a character named the grinch. The grinch is an outcast who lives outside of a town called Whoville. Everyone in Whoville loves Christmas, but the grinch hates Christmas. The grinch comes up with a plan to ruin Christmas for all of the people in Whoville. He steals everyones presents, trees, and food. Later, he feels guilty and decides to return all of the belongings and hosts a big feast for everyon

Great book. Disagree that this is for ages 3 - 8. It should be required reading for all to help counter-act the messages of commercialism that we are exposed to on a daily basis from October to January. Dr. Seuss has a marvelous way with words which would be reason enough to read his book but to add to that he has a "monster" in the form of a Grinch, an angel in the form of Cindy Lou Who, and a heist-turned-miracle. This is also one of those rare books that were able to be turned i

My all time favorite children's book. I can read this over and over again. The kid in me had to put it on my ever expanding bookshelf. A wonderful Christmas tradition that I thoroughly enjoy. I love to read this book aloud.

Absolutely LOVE Dr. Seuss and everything about his books. This story gives a great moral to small kids and it is fun because it rhymes. This book can open ideas for several different units; for example, math, writing, etc.

It's interesting to come back to the book after having experienced this story so often via the famous Chuck Jones/Boris Karloff full color Christmas TV classic. There's definitely an affinity between the illustrative styles of Seuss and Jones; certainly no better pairing of artistic talents for the purpose of interpreting a visual story into another medium. The Grinch is scrawnier and more impish in the book, almost fish-like or reptilian. The world of Whoville is best experienced in both versio

Without question, the best Christmas story there is. We've read it so many times, I can very nearly do it by heart. Kate loves when I do the Cindy Lou Who voice best.

The Grinch had never liked Christmas. He did not know why he kept putting up with it. This year he will make sure everyone would have an awful Christmas. He had a plan. He went to every house and stold all the gifts, decorations, food and more. But he realized that everything seemed the same in the village even though he stold everything. He eventually returned it when he realized that it was not about the things but sharing time with loved ones. Children should know and be taught the moral of t

Genre: Picture Book

Personal Response: I love this story. In enjoy the hyperbole in the descriptions, the thoroughness of the Grinch's plans and execution of them and of course the happy ending, along with the moral.

I weep for our Eid. I wish we, Saudi Muslims, enjoyed Eid as much as American and European Christians enjoy their Christmas, or even how other Muslim countries enjoy their Eid. It saddens me how dull Eid has become here in Saudi.
I do believe that it's special and we should restore it's joy and happiness to it. I also believe in change. (Obama Mode Activated) I think we should start making Eid special to ourselves, first, then our loved ones. This can be easily done, right? :c

What a fabulous book. Of course I love Dr Seuss and remember many of them very fondly from my own childhood. Not this one though for some reason. I had to wait til I was a 40 something to discover this book. I don't think it will ever become my favourite Seuss, but it is one of his many wonderful books. I love how a curmudgeonly old grinch helps us discover the meaning of Christmas, as he indeed discovers it for himself as well. Who can't love a book with a line:

This book is a classic. It teaches children the true meaning of Christmas. The number of gifts under the tree, decorations outside, or food on the table is not what matters. Family, friends, and love are what Christmas is really about. The rhyming of the book makes it even more interesting and exciting to read. This book was so great that it was made into a movie that is watched by families yearly during the Christmas season. It would be a great addition to the classroom, especially during the h

I was scared off this story by Previews of the 2000 movie version - another Jim Carey-in-a-mask movie. (let alone the Previews of the 2003 Cat in the Hat movie!).
So I came to this book with some sceptisim - but it is Christmas time and it was just sitting there on the library shelf!
I was pleasantly suprised. The Dr Seuss rhyme and rhythm is there, although it seems not as pronounced as If I Ran The Zoo. The anti-consumerism sentiment was agreeable (after emptying a More...

A favorite memory of my son's childhood... I never shushed a child while I was reading them a story. It was always interactive time (well, except when I got carried away).
And, as it happens, I remember the first time I read How the Grinch Stole Christmas! to my 5-year-old son. We were deep in the story, having a blast, when I got to the part about "Little Cindy Lou Who, who was no more than two."

I'm not sure exactly when I read this book but I think it must have been a few years after it first came out because I remember reading it for children I was babysitting. I thought it would be boring but as I read it aloud, I loved it and I remember laughing out loud. The children loved it and so did I. Even though I was by no means an adult, I enjoyed it in a different way than they did. This is one of those perfect read aloud books. The language is fun to read and the story keeps even a quasi-
