15% into this book and I gave up. It feels like I'm reading fanfiction, it really does.
The protagonist has no personality, there's barely any dialogue, I feel like I'm reading a movie script, or a Wikipedia plot overview.
And if someone rips you out of your life, only to have a military force come bursting to your rescue... why exactly would you go with the person who upended your life? And then to later shoot a random stranger with no hesitation to save this upender?
Yeah, not buying it.

Ok, WOW. What planet does Kailin Gow come from, 'cuz her stories are outta this world!!!

I have never read an ending like this one. My God, I'm still recovering from it. I think this will be my favorite series from Gow. It's not just the storyline that's fascinating but the characters and all the history that connects them. Apparently, it's a small world when it comes to the Underground and the Others.

There seems to be nothing that Kailin writes that I don't like, her writing is superb and she draws me in with each and every new book or series that I read.

Fade is the first book in the Fade series by Kailin Gow. This is also the first time I’ve read anything by this author. While the premise of the book itself was a bit different for me, there was the usual teenaged angst, and of course the dreaded and hated 3-way relationship love triangle between Celestra Caine and two other possible love interest.
Imagine if you will that you are an average teenaged girl who is a high school senior. You are in a relationship with fellow jock Grayson, and things seemingly are going well. Then you come home from school and your entire family has disappeared without a single trace that they were there in the first place.

Then, imagine that you get a call that says that you are going to “Fade” and wake up with a stranger looking over you. This is the start of Celestra’s journey to find out who, or what she really is. It is also a story of discovery that she isn’t a normal teenager, and that she has the ability to run faster than anyone else, except the mysterious Jack who becomes not only her mentor, but something else entirely. She also has the ability to smolder a person to death with fire which comes in handy as she is chased by the Others who supposedly want her dead.

I’ve read where people are confused by what Fade means. Think of it as Witness Protection except that you don’t remember anything about your past life, including the family that raised you. They basically erase your memories, give you a new name and fingerprints, and a whole new look. This isn’t a story where the girl wakes up in a new body. It’s a story of self-discovery and awareness that you are not normal and there are those who will do anything to rid the world of your presence in it.

There are two negatives for me.

1. The so called bad guys, called the Others come looking for Celestra because she is dangerous to mankind and has been dragged outside by Grayson who may or may not be working for the enemy. Just when it seems as though Jack and the Underground are ready to pounce and save the day……….:::crickets::::

2. I guess I am happy in a way that I did not pay for this book. I borrowed it from www.booklending.com which is part of Amazon.com. They give you 14 days to read the book before it is sent back to the owner. Good thing too. I would not pay for a book that is so short. Free, absolutely!

Fade is a very unique fantasy thriller. This story has potential. It's a page-turner with a number of interesting twists. But... the characters seem pretty shallow to me, and most importantly, this is not a complete story. The "book" is fairly short (3000 Kindle locations) and ends in a cliff-hanger. The only way to protect herself and those she loves is to fade, to have never existed, to have the memories of those she loves wiped away, as well as her own and become a totally different person, but Celestra is quite willing to submit on the memory issue, which makes things really interesting.

Fade is a fast-paced thriller with elements of science fiction, fantasy, and of course, romance all combined. It is not a very long book, but the action starts and the beginning and keeps you on your toes throughout the whole book. The concept is unique and keeps you guessing as the story progresses. To me, it has the feel of the television shows Nikita and Fringe mixed together. Then there is the oh so hot Jack Simple, who is not only beautiful to look at, he has a British accent, is a secret agent, and always knows just what to say and what to do in every situation, even when Celestra really screws up. Grayson, the boyfriend, is also pretty hot himself, but things aren't as they seem with him either. As the story progresses, the mystery unfolds further, culminating in a life and death battle between the two factions that are vying for control of Celestra. If you are looking for a great fast-paced and thrilling read, Fade is something you might want to check out. (less)

I liked this book. It's my first Kailin Gow book. I googled her a little bit, and I was shocked to find out how many books she has and I never heard of her, so I had to read something of hers. I will definitely be reading more. Kailin Gow has a simple writing style, which I hated before. But now, I am beginning to appreciate the style, it's very easy to keep up with and to understand.
The plot is different from anything I have read before, but part of it is very common. For example, many books start with a girl/boy who doesn't know that she/he is special, then suddenly something happens and her/his powers are unleashed. I like the fact that Kailin Gow doesn't explain everything in the first book and she ends it with such a cliffhanger that I am DYING to read book 2.
I liked most of characters. Celestra is wonderful, she would make a great friend, although I hated the fact that most female protagonists nowadays, are all gorgeous and model-looking girls. I liked Grayson, he is over-protective and helpful, but I didn't like Jack that much, he grew on me eventually.
I have to try to keep my reviews SHORT these days. So let's rap it up. I will surely be reading the next book in the series, and the third book, and maybe more. So, if you want an enjoyable, paranormal, and mysterious read then Fade is the one for you... Go grab a copy!(less)

Someone already said it, but I feel I should mention it again: this book reads like fanfiction.
I loved the concept, and how disturbing it must be to find yourself instantly forgotten, but... a few pages in and I could see what I had been tricked into reading.

Right off the hop you meet Celeste who learns that not only that she will Fade but her family and everyone around her will no longer remember her. Ya not exactly what you want to hear right? However she does prove to be a determined and strong main character. She stands up for what she wants or finds some way to accomplish what she wants. Even after being removed from the world she knew and loved her ability to rationalize what is best for everyone and then adjust to her new situation was relatively quick and easy. Not saying that there was no issues but she let most of it go fair easy and quick. The things that she couldn't just walk away from I got to a point but felt that she was risking more than needed. For the most part though I could understand the reasoning behind her actions.

There are two guys in this book and just putting it out there for all of you that are a little cautious when it comes to the possibility of the "triangle." This does not pose a problem for me though. I found that even with the two guys there wasn't really enough focus on the romance part of things to really worry about it all for the most part. Not saying that there aren't moments that you will love *cough* Jack Simple *cough* but this was more about the action than the boys. Both of the guys definitely have their perks but ultimately I have high hopes for Jack for reasons that I can not disclose with out some large spoilers.

The story itself was unique and easy to follow despite it's fast pace. Kailin Gow has a way of giving you most of what you want and need while keeping it for the most part simple. The fading itself is different and I didn't quite understand why Celeste and why then but it is totally a patience thing. Things are revealed in good time and while you are getting there, you get a good idea of what the general process is like for people that fade. The only thing that you don't really learn much about is the Others... The idea that they are not the good guys is defiantly out there but who they are exactly is left a mystery for the time being.

This book will pull you in, strap you up and take you on one heck of a ride. Kailin Gow has created an action packed thriller with this one, there is not doubt about it. There are a few twists that left my jaw hanging and to be honest the ending seems to promise yet another action packed start to the next book Falling. I think once I was completely in this book one of the biggest questions was who do you trust... Still a question and I can't wait to pick up the next one to find out the answer! Well I hope the answer is there in the action and at times heartbreaking story.

Straight away what seems to be a perfectly normal life, takes a dramatic turn when Celestra comes home to find her family gone. This is where it all starts to get really interesting. First, comes one Jack Simple. How is it not possible to fall in love with him at first sight? Remind you of James Bond much? Super secret spy protecting the ladies, and secretly saving the world. The action increases as we get to know Jack and we delve deeper into the story. When Celestra starts asking about what's happening, we are just as anxious for answers as she is, where is she going? Who are the people out to get her? And what is going to happen to her?

Instantly our connection with Celestra grows as the novel continues, her questioning of who and what she actually is matches ours, and we are both eager to learn more. With learning about the Underground, herself, Jack and her Faded self, you would expect to get lost in the amount of things happening in this novel, surprisingly it doesn't at all. Gow has done a fantastic job of mingling in all the information that is relevant, without making us forget about other important bits of information in the process.

As the book develops, what she is becomes a more pressing question. Her powers are developing and more are out to get her. Who she thinks she can trust is blinded by Jack and the Underground trying to protect her. A she is Faded her relationship with Jack develops, much to our pleasure and prediction :) She becomes more confused about if Jack really likes her, as well as guilt felt for Grayson, who has no doubt forgotten about her already.

We have no trouble connecting and falling in love with Celestra and all the minor characters. When Grayson gets throw into the picture there is a lot more action involved, including a love-triangle. You all probably know by now how much I hate love-triangles, but this one is purely entertaining, and we know Celestra's mind is made on who she wants.

The end. Just WOW!!! Be prepared to be on the edge of your seat. Betrayal, emotions on a high, love, memories and a hint of war, leave us utterly shocked and craving for Falling (Fade #2). The way this ends, I can't even begin to describe the torment. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! This is a must read series, pick it up now!

Learn a new life, keep herself safe, and make sure she doesn’t hurt anyone else in the process.

And then along comes Grayson. He’s her “past” boyfriend. She still has feelings for him, how could she not. But when trouble comes, she has feelings for Jack too. Does she follow the future with Jack, or stick to what she knows from the past with Grayson? Hmmm guess we’ll have to find out later LoL! I will say I’m on team Jack for right now. Lets just say I don’t know if I trust Grayson anymore. But I want to. I want to think when you have a relationship with someone for a significant amount of time, you know that person. Hmmm… Time will tell!

I love a story that gives me crazy plot twists. Just as you’re figuring out what’s happening- BAM!! Something will shake your feet on the ground! And Ms Gow definitely through a whammy in there for me. Her writing has always been so fun and enjoying to me. It is so easy to be sucked into the story. And it’s so easy to connect with the characters! I absolutely love reading EVERYTHING this woman touches- and she has A LOT!!

My suggestion is to check out Ms Gow. There is something for every person in one of her series- but this one is quickly becoming my favorite! Well, except for maybe her Wick Woods- there’s werewolves in there hahahaha! I love the story, I am really enjoying the characters and I can’t wait to see what’s gunna happen next!! A while back I read a book called The Serialist, about a man who wrote a variety of YA paranormal romance novels under various pseudonyms. This book seems like it was written by someone like that. It definitely stuck to the YA formula without delving too deeply into any of the characters. The book didn't have an ending so much as a last page. I understand using a cliff-hanger to keep people reading, but this was more like the author just stopped writing. Decent story though.

The concept was very original and while I enjoyed the idea I was very disappointed in the book. Most of my disappointment stems from the length of the book and where it ended. To me this book felt like the first portion of a longer book. It was the establishment of a back story and not really a novel.I felt like I paid far too much for back story. While I am interested in reading the remainder of the story I don't feel like the $$$ is worth it. That really pains me to say because I love dystopia...more
