This is a book that from the very first page had both my children 'entranced'. Prior to this book, my son was a bit 'meh' to listening to stories and would only tolerate noisy or tactile books.

Now, this is,'The Book' that quite frankly has superpowers. When I need normality to resume in the household due to the kids either squabbling, crying, getting bored and so on I now call out to them asking for,'The...more

As a parent, I have to say when I read this without Zat & Mat I was a tad bit disturbed by the plot. The Beastie is very much a mean beast and does exactly what fearsome beasties do in a young child's eyes. It's fearsome, sneaky, mean, tricky...more

The Fearsome Beastie by Giles Paley-Phillips (illustrated by Gabriele Antonini) is about a fearsome beastie who is searching for something to eat and the children are at the top of his list. Will they be fooled by the fearsome beastie and his clever tricks?

I have to admit, this book caught me by surprise a little bit. I reminded me of the Grimm's Fairytales. As someone who has read not only our watered down versions but the originals as well I must say that The Fearsome Beastie does a lot to bri...more

The Fearsome Beastie is a fun read that both children and parents can enjoy together. It's a silly read written in rhyme, and brought to life with bright, colorful illustrations, making it appealing to younger readers.

The story is about a fearsome beastie who wonders into a villages acting like he's sad so he can lure children to him and than he eats him. The beastie meets his match when he wonders into the wrong village and meets his doom with a fabulous axe wielding Grandma who not only frees...more

I don’t usually read children’s books unless there is a child asking to be read to, or in a waiting room as it’s the only thing to read> However i am so glad i got to read the Fearsome Beastie. We did a lot with this book, we read it ourselves, then read it to some children, then let them have it for a few days. The results are, it’s a fantastic story with superb illustrations that allow the kids to talk about and discuss. Even down to the material used in printing gives this book the edge ov...more

Thoughts

So I have two very special guest reviewers for this book today.
As it is a children's picture book, my two youngest daughters and I have sat down to read this book together and we will each give our own review.

It’s not often that I find a kid’s book that I’m not excited to read in my kindergarten classroom but with “The Fearsome Beastie” I don’t think I can find a lesson that it will tie into. The story has great rhyme and predictability, and heck, even the illustrations are great. It’s the plot that I can’t get past. The beastie in the story is mean and lurks in the corners waiting for the unsuspecting children. And then he eats them. One child gets away to run to grandma and then they split the beas...more

This is my first time reviewing a picture book, and what a delightful reading experience it has been. My son Gavyn loves picture books, even if he is now 9 years old. So I told him read it with me and tell me what he thinks.

The story is written in rhyme that makes my son so happy, it is illustrated by Gabriele Antonini. My son described his work on this book as "cute", "fun" and "colorful". When we finished reading the book, his first words were; "That was weird and I think it would be kind of s...more

My son really enjoyed this book. He liked the drawings and the colors right away and laughed a lot. He really enjoyed it when I read it to him. He was focused on the book the whole time and paid close attention. In fact he liked it so much that he told his Dad all about it when he got home from work.
I thought it was a great story. However I will give one caution. My son is 3 years old and he did seem a little scared and concerned over the Beastie. My son is quite good with books though and soon...more

When I received The Fearsome Beastie to read and review with my son, I read it through to myself first. The book is written in rhyme and reminded me of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson in its style, although it's definitely more dark and scary. I did feel at first that it might be a little too scary for a younger child and I did have some slight doubts about reading it to my ‘only just’ 5 year old son, R, but he’s quite a level headed child and so I gave it a go.

The story is about how The Fearsom...more

Ok I don't normally do children's books but when i got asked to take a look at this one I was shocked at how much I liked it. it was alot darker then most children's books but i think that's good, its moving with the times, I know this is a good thing because I have two children one aged 6 and one aged 11 and both children loved it. when i hear my children play they play monsters, and they love it. so why not bring that into there books as well. my children loved this book, I had to read it twic...more

How many times has your child complained they couldn't sleep because of a strange noise? What if there was a story behind those sounds and it had a name? Giles Paley-Phillips has taken this concept and created a fully realized, enjoyable picture books in the style of a milder Brothers Grimm tale of things that go bump in the night. And coupled with Gabriele Antonini's colorful and thoroughly enchanting illustrations, The Fearsome Beastie is a quirky, humorous story. Beware of axe wielding grandm...more
Apageaway
*With help from my three year old son.
This book was very cute book written by Giles Paley-Phillips. It is wonderfully written and illustrated. I have had to read it to my son several times. He loves the colors and pictures. He really enjoys the rhyming. I think it is a very courageous book for kids who have fears of monsters. I think there is also a hidden message of not always trusting something just because of the way it looks. On a children’s book level I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

In the classic style of children's rhymes, peppered together with a twist of Edward Gory and the Brothers Grimm, this terrifying tale will definitely raise a few hairs. But, if you are brave, and you trust in those who you love, everything will turn out okay. I enjoyed The Fearsome Beastie by Giles Paley- Phillips ~ DMS

The bright and colorful illustrations are absolutely gorgeous! The author's writing and rhymes were fabulous. However, the plot is a little hard to swallow. To be fair, it has a very nice message that alerts kids to be aware of strangers and always find an adult. Many parents will appreciate that. Yet, I did find it a little too spooky for the younger part of the picture book crowd.

The Fearsome Beastie is pitched as having a dark tone. So readers are warned. But I must admit I don't want to read...more

Not for the faint-hearted, so I wouldn't recommend it for kids with a more sensitive souls, However it a clever book and I can see why it won the people's book prize.
