If you've got a youngster in the preschool and early-elementary age range then you are probably familiar with Tom Lichtenheld's funny and brilliant books: Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, Shark vs. Train, and Duck! Rabbit!

In E-MERGENCY!, he and newcomer, Ezra Fields-Meyer, have fun with the Alphabet. The story is that all the letters of the alphabet live together in a big house. Everything's going along fairly well --okay F didn't have a good report card-- until E has an acciden More...

E-mergency! by Tom Lichtenheld and Ezra Fields-Meyer is a very funny book about the problems that occur when E is injured and unable to be used in words.

When E falls down the stairs and breaks a leg, he's taken to the hospital for X-rays, & TLC to rest and recover. A announces that O will take over for E, since he's so well rounded, and to substitute O for E in all words starting NOW. Letters fan out with the news. People are still confused & E isn't healed. Why isn't E recovering? More...

Don't be deceived by the alphabet theme; this ABColutely deee-lightful picture book, chock-full of wordplay, visual puns, and my favorite device - breaking the fourth wall - is for older kids. Like my 12-year-old, who giggled right through it as we identified side jokes sprinkled generously throughout the illustrations (I bet we missed a lot more). When the letter E takes a tumble and lands in the hospital, well-rounded O is called on to fill in for her. Since E must rest up, she's not allowe More...

The book E-mergency, written and illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld is a wonderfully illustrated children's story. I chose this 2011 Tom Lichtenheld original as a perfect book that in my opinion, should have won the 2011 Caldecott award. The book offers inticate, brightly colored, and animated illustrations that could grab the attention of any young child. Along with being intriguing to a young child, parents and teachers alike would appreciate the detail and creativity that are apparent in the illu More...

You know how we feel about the work of Tom Lichtenheld here in the Bonny Glen. Shark vs. Train. Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site. You can imagine, then, our delight upon receiving a review copy of his latest picture book from his publishers.

E-mergency!—created in collaboration with fourteen-year-old Ezra Fields-Meyer—is another winner. See, the letters of the alphabet all live together in a big house. They come barrelling More...

This is a deliciously delightful book filled with word play and visuals that will have readers laughing and wanting to share some of the lines with others. The premise that all the letters of the alphabet live together in one house is sound, and the letters all have different jobs to do. When E gets hurt one day while rushing down the stairs and must recuperate, there is a moratorium placed on the use of the letter E. Since O is called upon to fill E's place, many confusing words are created, an More...

2 November 2011 E-MERGENCY! by Tom Lichtenheld and Ezra Fields- Meyer, Chronicle, October 2011, 40p., ISBN: 978-0-8118-7898-2

"'Why isn't E even crying?' [asks the letter Y, who is always asking questions]
"'Sometimes she's a silent E.'" [responds the well-rounded letter O, who is going to get mighty busy in a minute]

Third, fourth, and fifth graders love to engage in word play involving double meanings. They are learning to pick up on puns and they More...

It was the cleverness of the letter play found in Lichtenheld's pictures that did me in. E-Mergency is a cute story - when E gets hurt, O has to fill in for E until E recovers, and words all over the world are a mess. The punchline that E is can't recover completely because the narrator of the book keeps using it plays in nicely to the "what's a narrator" discussion. But the sly humor of all the letters doing their thing is what will get kids to want to read this book over and over. In More...

This delightful and original alphabet book shows and tells with lots of jokes for those kids really familiar with their alphabet and sounds - 2nd grade-ish? The whole alphabet lives together in a house. When E slips and falls down the stairs, she is taken away to the hospital and, so she can recuperate, all the e's in words must now be replaced with o's. You try reading the rest of the book phonetically with all of the e's replaced with o's. It's hard. And fun. And silly. Look at how the l More...

E-MERGENCY by Tom Lichtenheld and Ezra Fields-Meyer is a language lover's romp through the alphabet - with every letterish pun you can imagine, played out in the house where the whole crew lives together. (P is in the bathroom in the first illustration...if that gives you a sense of the laugh-out-loud humor.) When E becomes injured, the other letters must come to her aid and take her place ("Boop! Boop!" go the cars) until she has time to recover. This book is simply so much fun - and More...

Oh, how I love this book. It's clever, funny and a true challenge to read out loud (think about NOT using any "e"s in words, and you'll understand why). But I truly fell head over heals for this book when I learned that the co-author, Ezra Fields-Meyer, is a young, autistic child who caught Lichtenheld's notice after creating an amazing animated short called "Alphabet House", which is the inspiration for this book. Ezra's story is so inspiring and heartwarming, and chronic More...

An alphabet book that tells the story about a houseful of letters than run downstairs to breakfast. E, unfortunately, falls on the way down and is hurt. I like it because it tells what different letters in the alphabet are for and also how they are pronounced, and also the different consonants, vowels, and other parts of writing and speech. I liked that it had a comic book feel in the pictures, but I really was not impressed with the illustrations. I'm not positive I would recommend it off the t More...

In the letter house all the letters work together to have a happy home, but when one of the letters has an “E-mergency” everything gets a bit chaotic. Suddenly there’s not an E in sight and it seems as though there’s a chance he’ll never return without a bit of TLC. As “O” steps in to help everyone gets more and more confused, especially one person in particular…the reader. Once everyone understands they all need to give E his time to rest he gets a full recovery and is back to his normal E-self More...

When the letter E runs down the stairs a little too quickly in her efforts to get to breakfast, she takes quite a spill and is injured. The doctor orders E on strict rest, so A takes over (he is Assertive, after all) and determines that O must take E's place until she has recovered. And trust mo, this makos for somo clover and knoo-slapping ontortainmont.

The entire alphabet lived together in one house. Every morning they all ran down the stairs to breakfast, but one morning there was an accident. E was running down the stairs too fast and took a tumble. The ambulance arrived and took E off to the ER. With E gone, A took charge and assigned E’s duties to O. In order for E to heal, no one could use that letter. The letters took to the airwaves to ask people not to use the letter E until E recovered. They even went to DC to tell the governme More...

This book is laugh out loud funny. Which I did at my desk at work when I first read it. When E falls down the steps and is rushed to the hospital, O is forced to step up and take her place until she recovers while the rest of her alphabetical housemates set out to tell the world the news that E is out of action until she recovers. The story in itself is amusing, but the artwork adds additional puns and general zaniness that children will love looking through them again and again.

Grades 1-5. This is Sooo much more than an ABC book. The fun is in the details. When letter E trips down the stairs, the other letters call the EMTs and then the search begins for a replacement for the Letter E. The Letter O is chosen. Soon all the text reflects this change. The details is where this book is really delightful. P always has to go potty. D and C are interested in comics and go to Washington.

Thoro would bo somo fun oxtonsion idoas for classrooms. Have fun!

This is the story of the letter E, who lives in a house with all of the other letters of the alphabet. When E is injured, it is an E-mergency!!! This book is full of clever and fun letter puns and jokes. You really have to look closely for them though, giving it a similar feel to books where kids need to search and find things. Also, since E is hurt, O needs to fill in for her EVERYWHERE, making much of the story super silly to read out loud.

One of the most laugh-out-loud picture books I have read in a long while. This is a book best shared by a single reader or a parent and child. Like a graphic novel, the illustrations lend so much more to the storyline, and should not be missed. Be sure to read all of the commentary of the letters and numbers in the story--the letter Y is always asking questions, X is always 'marking the spot' and Z is always tired. Too funny! I made everyone within arms reach around me read the book, too. More...

32 months - just not my cup of tea in an alphabet book. This doesn't make a very good read aloud book, so i'd say it's better for an older reader.... But then they probably wouldn't be reading an alphabet book to themselves at that point. In all honesty we didn't read the whole thing as O lots interest about 6-7 pages in. Maybe we missed whatever it was that appealed to the reviewers that gave it such a high rating.

One morning in the alphabet house, E falls down the stairs. It's an E-mergency and while E is laid up, no one can use this letter. O steps in to fill the gaps, but unfortunately this causes a lot of confusion! This is a clever concept for a book with lots of little humorous details that will appeal to a slightly older reader (I'd say K-1 and up... it's a bit too advanced for most preschoolers).

This book isn't a true alphabet concept book because it doesn't teach the alphabet within the text of the story. The main text of the story is suitable to read aloud to a preschool audience, but the illustrations are so small and so detailed that they are best pored over to catch all the little jokes and puns. Probably best shared with a parent or loved one instead of in a storytime.

The letter E breaks her legs and cannot be used at all or else she will not recover. Definitely for older readers of picture books even though it has to do with the alphabet. Pictures are cluttered and there are a lot of characters that make side comments, which the reader does not have to read to follow the story, but which add a lot to the story. Not recommended.

Ha! Double HA! This book made me laugh out loud, multiple times! There is too much to read this as part of my storytime, but all the jokes that can be shared one-on-one or as a picture book with enough to keep an elementary school reader interested. Perhaps a school visit book where kids will laugh at a book talk full of words without the letter "e". So fun!

This is an AWESOME book! I loved the story and the pictures were fantastic! Can you imagine a world without the letter "E"? If so, try reading this story aloud where E is injured and can't be used! It's a challenge! Older students will really appreciate this book for its story and the great illustrations!

It was delightful to read on my own, since it gave me time to peruse each page and find all the funny little details, but I'm guessing that this would be hysterical as a read-aloud. Of course, I would probably have to practice it quite a bit before trying to read it aloud, but I think it would be worth it!

There are lots of side comments that would make it difficult to use in story time but there are great illustrations and a great read with a child who is just starting to read.
The letter E has fallen and injured herself-- which letters will replace her and how will words be spelled without her?

The clever premise of this book is that the letter E is injured and to help her recover, that letter is not used any longer! This causes a lot of confusion because all the words are misspelled for the rest of the book. Best appreciated by school age kids, I think.
