This may be my favorite IR romance featurign a BW/WM. Far too often the books in that genre are too short or filled with language that just isn't my preference. Rock Star is a real jewel in the genre though. The plot may be far-fetched, but the characters themselves feel as real as they could possibly be. If this type of situation were to actually occur, I could see it playing out EXACTLY as the author wrote it. I never read a book a second time immediately after having just finished it, and whi...more

First thing I have to mention is the love I have for the way Holcomb dealt with the issue of an interracial relationship, which is actually the main reason this book wound up on my list in the first place. It's a very real problem that just doesn't show up in fiction very often, and it was handled with an eye to realism, creating an effective stumbling block for Bryan and Callie without demonizing the people who raised the race issue. It wasn't something that was raised and then swept neatly und...more

She’s a small town bookstore owner from Maple Fork, Alabama.

He’s an international, sensational rock star with a scratchy, sensual voice.

Maple Fork, Alabama is about to rocked off its chair because once Bryan Spenser met Callie Lawson, owner of Books and So Forth, he had to know her. Had to be around her all the time. There were just a few differences which were actually hurdles they had to get through. In fact these hurdles included race, career, and their past.

If only every book could reference Chris Cornell! How awesome would that be?
I found this book during my search for a romance with a hot rock star, and I was only mildly disappointed.

Pros:
The hero -- Bryan -- was well done and didn't end up being cheesy.
It mentions Chris Cornell.
I couldn't put it down, and felt very glowy at the end.

Cons:
Typos.
The waiting game and indecision that Callie puts Bryan through would drive any regular guy to madness. It bothered me that she didn't give him the benefit...more

I'd give this a 3.5 rating. I enjoyed the overall story but had some major issues with the high-handedness of the racial themes. On one hand, I appreciate interracial romances that don't sweep race away like every thing is hunky-dory and sunshine when it's not. But the whole "white man's whore" thing just kept coming up repeatedly to beat me over the head. Although most of the story is set in a small Alabama town where that attitude is probably very prevalent, it was too much for my liking. Also...more

All in all, it was a pretty good book.I liked the fact that the characters were seemingly polar opposites.Callie is a bookstore owner and Bryan is (duh!)a rock star, but they were able to bond because Callie helps Bryan go through a difficult time in his life and because of their common interests. They really had some sweet and intimate moments and I could see how and why they fell in love. The writing was also really good,I had an insight on the characters's past but I was sometimes tired of read...more

Description: When Bryan Spencer, the lead singer of Storm Crow, moves to a small southern town to recover from his best friend’s death, he meets Callie Lawson, a bookstore owner who helps him to heal. But can their small town romance survive within the world of his big time career?

The Good: The story is very compelling, and it was so nice to read an IR romance with a hero that leaned beta. Not every author can pull a beta off, but Holcomb does it well, and crafts a very attractive hero in Bryan...more

3.5 stars. This book was interesting. I fell in love with Bryan and his story. But with Callie story, I know small towns are always in your business as well as your family but honestly. Her dad was very cold towards her after the situation and I honestly she had a good heart to accept his apology because I sure hell will not do it. She also did it very wrong not to speak to Bryan until he showed up, that is being a coward; and not having her head together besides of being a business woman. love...more

An interracial romance between a woman who owns a bookstore and a man who’s a rock musician. While I found the writing occasionally clunky or charcters being way too psychologically aware to be believable, overall it was a fun story; the characters were interesting, and the author doesn’t gloss over the real problems the couple faces. (Plus, when Callie says to Bryan that the Alabama-Auburn game is practically a religious holiday and that everyone in the state basically sides with one or the oth...more

Callie and Brian are the cutest couple. This book is often compared to another book that came out around the same time. I don't get the comparison because the only thing the two books have in common is the fact that the hero is a rock star. The 4 characters are so different and the plots are miles apart. I felt more for the couple in Rock Star because they had more insecurities and the book is more emotionally intriguing. Callie seemed to give up more by becomming a part of Brians world; she was...more

This book was amazing. The hero i totally fell in love with, he was so sensitive, and forgiving, and understanding, but i did hate his manager. As for the heroine of this tale, i also liked her. I want to address the issue of her not being interdependent, because she has to ask for her families approval. What her family thinks means the world to her, she respects her parents enough to ask them what they think.

this book does focus on race, and this is the major problem (for her, not for him)but i...more

Wow! Great story. I read Dark Star first and I was intrigued by Callie. On Dark Star she seemed so confident and strong, she was such an interesting supporting character. I was expecting more of the same in her story. But, she was more naive and innocent than I was prepared for. I LOVED Bryan! This was a really great read, and it stands on its own which I really love. Dark Star and Rock Star feature two best friends their stories support each other, both stories are equally good in their own rig...more

I liked this story. It had some passion, it had some romance, it had "music". This story also had some issues that some black women experience when involved in interracial relationships, particularly relationships with white men. Some women can identify with Callie and her encounters with people who she thought would be supportive, and those that many would consider 2-faced. The character that had me tickled, besides Tonya, was Granny. I feel that everyone needs to have a "Granny" in their life...more

This is a refreshing book which not only deals with interracial relationships but also explores the emotions and problems that can occur when a woman gets romantically involved with a celebrity. Callie Lawson is a owner of a bookstore in Maple Fork,Alabama while Bryan Spencer is a lead singer of the L.A. rock band Storm Crow. Callie and Bryan meet when Byran goes to Callie's bookstore, Books and So Forth, to find science fiction books. Although
Callie is intrigued by Bryan, she feels that he pro...more

Just An Okay Read

Callie has worked fervently on her five year plan and it is now time to start a new five year plan. Owning her own bookstore with her best friend in her small town home of Mapel Fork, Alabama has been her biggest challenge, but a rewarding one nonetheless. However, when Bryan Spencer, a rock star, comes into her book store, Callie will find a new focus to dwell on finding unconventional love. Thus ROCK STAR is the story of two people from different backgrounds who find the mind...more

I picked this up on a whim while fixing the romance section in Barnes and Noble, because the cover grabbed my attention. I admit...I was not expecting a whole lot, just a nice read to pass the time. But it is always nice when you get more than you expect...in a good way. I loved the main character, she was serious and focused and everything a person like her should be. Sometimes you read the character description and how the character is written does not fit who you think they should be. She fit...more

This has got to be one of my favorite books I've read this year.

She's a small town girl. He's an international rock star. She's black. He's white.

Aside from the obvious social and uhm, financial difference, I love how the author worked out the whole BW/WM deal. I don't really know how racism works but this book make everything look realistic.

I also love how Callie stands her grounds throughout the whole thing and how Bryan is just Bryan.

Since I completely suck at making reviews, all I have to sa...more

I thought that the story had a good concept and a good beginning. In the middle it started getting flaky and some of the conversations that were had could have been edited better or deleted all together because it didn't enhance the story (i.e.-the sherriff). The indecision was overly drawn out to the point that I started to believe that he should have told Callie that they were through. The book could have been about 20 pages shorter and it would have made it better.

I liked the idea of the characters meeting in a bookstore, and her not knowing who he was at first. I really liked the character of Bryan, talk about the patience of a saint! Callie was annoying. For someone who was supposed to be so intelligent, she didn't seem to have much common sense. What did the guy have to do to convince her? Open a vein? And what 29 year old woman still worries about what her parents would think if she went to California with a guy?

Over all a decent book. The first half is a little wonky in the way people respond to each other during intense scenes and the way the main characters get to know each other seems like it used to be in a different order then it's in now. Things smooth out once we meet the band and all that . The one problem I have with the second half is that the guy's jealous ex tells a tabloid that his new girlfriend is a prostitute and some other (racist) stuff. And my problem with that is no main stream goss...more

What are the chances of a small town girl falling in love with a big rock star and he falls for her too? Zilch! Thats pretty much real life but in this cool romance story not so. It is a interracial love story that just couldn't have been better. I LOVED it.

Bryan is in Alabama after the death of his best friend and bandmate. His manager sends him there to a cabin to relax and try and heal his wounds. His best friend had been with him since they were very little and abused children. So it is hard...more

Okay, I can't say that this was my favorite interracial romance novel. Callie got on my nerves one too many times and there were just too many slow moments. This was one of those descriptive books a whole lot of description and not a lot of action. I had to skip pages just to get to some conversation. I did like; however, when they finally came together and establised the fact that they were a couple but other than that it was eh okay.

I'm not a romance novel reader per se so when I found myself caught up in this book and not being able to put it down...I surprised myself. The characters were well developed and the writing painted perfect pictures for me. The story was excellent and to this day I still want to try that pie. ROFL!

This was TRULY a good read!

I really liked this book and the way it ended, but the development of the story and characters was a bit slow and drawn out. It took me a little longer than usual to finish this book, since there were a lot of slow scenes. However, I got through it and it left me with a smile. :o)

The story of Bryan who's a rockstar on hiatus and Callie, a small town bookstore owner.

I liked the hero more than the heroine. Bryan had alot of depth. He was a little tortured and alot sexy. The scene in the kitchen where he lets Callie know how much he wants her was sexy without being smutty. Actually, that's how the book is; high on sexual tension which made it sexy despite there being not much sex.

Callie's character was a little flat to me. She had a bit of angst because she was concerned w...more

What can I say about this book that hasn't been said? I've read and re-read and re-re-read this book, which is unusual for me and romances. But hell-Bryan is my musician fantasy come to life. Callie is one lucky woman, and this is one compelling, fun and steamy read!

I really enjoy interracial couples whether they are M/M or M/F. This story was pretty realistic for me being a southern black woman that did marry a white man. Except mine wasn't a rock star. Thanks for a great read Roslyn Hardy Holcomb.

Like it but thought that Callie was way to hard on Bryan and taking her advice from her DAD was crazy when she was that old. Once you leave to nest you make your decisions yourself!

Enjoyable story about a rock star and the strong career woman for whom he falls in love. I would reduce the rating to 3 stars if you're not a fan of this genre.
