My thoughts:

It's time for another Jane Austen variation. This one was different because there was more passion and there was a whole new side to Mr Darcy.

In this one Mr Darcy is falling for Elizabeth, and when Wickham shows up he decides to tell her the truth about things. This leads to Elizabeth seeing him in a whole new light. There is courting and there is passion, yes that is the thing that makes this book stand out. Mr Darcy is really in lust with Lizzy, and she is starting to feel passiona...more

This novel starts off with a very funny prologue that immediately captured my interest much like Elizabeth captured Darcy's. Watching Darcy convince Elizabeth of the depth of his emotions was sweet and enjoyable. However, the novel takes a dark turn with Wickham and never quite recaptures the blissful and erotic nature found at the beginning of the story, leaving me more sad than satisfied at the outcome of the supporting characters. The author is quite adept in her description of Elizabeth and...more

I don’t like to think of Darcy as enduring life rather than living it prior to Elizabeth. I don’t think Elizabeth consumed his life but enhanced it. I think Darcy and Caroline Bingley were friends. He might even have thought her pretty. They talked, spent quite a lot of time together and even schemed against Bingley together. I don’t think Darcy was shy, but rather above the small talk of the local gentry. When Colonel Fitzwilliam said Darcy didn’t take the time to learn to be easy in company, I...more

The best way to describe how I felt about this book: it was a guilty pleasure. Another great way to describe it, if you'll forgive me, is that it is a Jane Austen porno. Basically, it starts where Elizabeth meets Wickham in the original Austen novel. It quickly changes course when Mr. Darcy gets over himself in a hurry and lets Elizabeth know what kind of guy Wickham is. An interesting premise, yes. But not really consistent with Mr. Darcy as Austen created him. Which becomes rather immaterial,...more

Ho notato fin...more

I'm going back-and-forth between 3 and 4 stars, but I'll round up.

I've read a few P&P sequels or re-tellings, and this was one that didn't cause me to become unduly upset. Lydia has always been my least my favorite character, so I was glad to see she had her day of reckoning in this one, but ended up becoming (view spoiler)[ a fine, young lady. (hide spoiler)]

It was rather annoying to see Darcy and Elizabeth sneaking (view spoiler)[ into private rooms to sleep together ALL THE TIME. I mean,...more

The truth is, it had nothing to do with the jacket cover--50 pages in, Darcy and Elizabeth were together and basically it was 50 Shades of Grey, Jane Austen-style.

I read it in a day and the only thing that kept me reading was the steamy sex scenes, certainly not the plot where little to nothing happens. Any little problem that comes up is basically solved by Mr. Darcy's money. No need to have propriety, and the hypocrisy of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam is appalling. How can you anticipate your wedding vows, get married early because you want to screw like rabbits, and THEN admonish your younger sisters for trying to follow in your illustrious footsteps?

I've read many sequels to P&P, and for me, this was one of the most enjoyable. It's a reimagining of the original novel based on the premise that Darcy makes one choice differently - he tells everyone about Wickham right from the start. I liked the concept and the direction that the author took with the characters from that one moment. I do agree the Darcys come across as hypocritical at times, but I nonetheless enjoyed the story. There are some rather romance-novel-esque sex scenes, which w...more

"The Truth About Mr. Darcy" by Susan Adriani

I really liked this "what if" version of P&P. Very spicy so purists may not appreciate it.
Although Darcy & Elizabeth come together fairly quickly in the story the author does a great job of developing the rest of story of their courtship & marriage. They face obstacles and difficulties but she doesn't resort to any "big misunderstandings" & long separations (which I hate).
It really kept my interest. I would be interested in reading any...more

I've read several Jane Austen Printed Fan Fictions (as I call them) and love the different looks the various authors take of one of their favorite books. That's whats so great about fan fiction, it's the highest form of flattery that someone puts the time and effort into envisioning your characters after 'The End' or in 'What Ifs?'.
Pride and Prejudice one are some of my favorites and there are so many to choose from. This one falls just about in the middle of what I've re...more

I certainly wouldn't say that this was the best book I have ever read - but I also wouldn't say that it lacked depth or interesting moments!

There was a nice twist from Lydia's story, as well as Wickham's - but this novel was all about Darcy and Elizabeth and finding themselves after a "what if" scenario: what if Darcy told Elizabeth, upon that fateful ride into Meryton, just who George Wickham really was?

(view spoiler)[
The retelling of Pride and Prejudice was quite cleverly done, as was seeing s

What is the truth in Susan Adriani's THE TRUTH ABOUT MR. DARCY? The truth is Darcy is madly, passionately, obsessively and desperately in love with Elizabeth and doesn't know what to do about it. The Master of Pemberley has met his match and his well-ordered world crumbles. How to put the pieces back together? By swallowing his pride and telling Elizabeth the truth about Wickham before her prejudice can hurt them both.

Darcy's early confession changes Elizabeth's opinion of him, leading Darcy to...more

The Truth About Mr. Darcy is a beautifully romantic variation of Pride and Prejudice that was originally self-published as Affinity and Affection (a more fitting and attractive title, in my humble opinion) in 2008. In this variation Ms. Adriani alters the scene where Darcy and Wickham first encounter each other in Meryton. Instead of letting Wickham insinuate himself in Elizabeth's good graces and tell vicious lies, Darcy shares his side of the story first. Instead of maintaining a healthy disli...more

I’ve come to the realization that Pride and Prejudice “what if’s” are my favorite sub-genre to read in the world of Jane Austen fan fiction (JAFF). They give us the opportunity to cut and mold the storyline of Austen’s work in a fresh new way, and to explore all the different avenues in the plot that are previously undiscovered. It’s fascinating that by changing one line of dialogue or one person’s action, you get an entirely different story that gives the reader an opportunity to discover somet...more

I enjoyed this books plot. I enjoyed Darcy and Elizabeth's unswerving devotion to each other and family ties. Even the changes in Lydia's personality for the better and Wickham's demise. There were several laugh out loud funny parts for me. Mr. Bennet's wit and personality were more clearing drawn out. Mr. Bingley was also painted much more intelligently than most times. And tho' they were newlyweds I still have a hard time that the intimacy would have been shared in so many places and with such...more

While I found this a interesting, I could not see it as a Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy AU novel. I mean at the beginning it had a good and interesting start, but it changed after a few chapters. I would read it again if I was just wanting to read an interesting story, but I think the story could have done better with it being Lizzy and Darcy.

One of the more enjoyable P&P variations I've read recently, although the author's Mr. Darcy doesn't behave much like my Mr. Darcy. Getting into a fight with Wickham in the middle of Meryton's streets? Albeit, it was to protect Elizabeth's honor, but still... that is not Darcy. And this is in the first few pages of the books. Many more character discrepancies come, and yet, it didn't really bother me, in part because it was so different and I enjoyed the voyage.

I rather enjoyed the writing of Ms. Adriani. It was exciting, engaging and complete page turner. Very much close to Elizabeth and Darcy true voice. So..... I cannot say that I regret reading it. In fact, it was a nice change from the many other P&P sequels etc. that I have read. What I did not enjoy is (Warning a little Plot Revealed) that in this "what if" story Adriani would suggest both Elizabeth and Darcy are so consumed by their passion for each other that they forego all manner of prop...more

The Truth is I have a problem with the storyline of this book, specifically dealing with Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth and Lydia. I don't want create a spoiler review, so I'm just going to say there is no topping the original work! I like erotic literature and this definately falls into that category but I REALLY had a problem with Darcy's character in this story. I just feel that the author took liberties with Darcy she ought not have.

I read this book under the new title The Truth About Mr. Darcy which has 435 pgs. The first 200 pgs was a breeze but the with all passionate interludes, that I skipped a bulk was quite tiring for me and made it a bit of a chore to read. The excitement from the beginning flatlined in the middle it picked up with Wickham drama.

I think I've finally learned my lesson about P&P spinoffs/sequels/etc. I think this one broke me. It wasn't necessarily bad, but by the end it was kind of pointless. The "what-if" scenario was interesting at first, but the whole latter half of the book was devoid of any real conflict or interesting plot. It was simply day-to-day life of the Darcy's, and far too much "romance" for my tastes. That may be interesting to some, but I found it tedious, hence the reason it took me so long to finish...more

I enjoyed reading this book although I knew I already read as "Affinity and Affection" The story was wonderful and Darcy was truely a knight in shining armor! The only thing that made me uncomfortable was the amorous sex scenes. I'm not really a Jane Austen purist, but I like have those scenes left to the amagination. This book reels me in right from the begining with Darcy in the Library dreaming of Elizabeth. I loved it the 1st time I read it and deffinitly loved reading it again. This story h...more

An interesting, quite "shocking" version of Pride & Prejudice.
I'll never be able to look at piano's & library desks in quite the same way :-)

This variation explores what might have happened if Darcy had told Elizabeth in the very beginning what a scoundrel Wickham was. A little heavy on the romance but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Didn't like - just not my idea of how Mr. Darcy or Elizabeth would behave and Elizabeth is too sweet...just couldn't warm to it. Didn't finish it.

Fantastic! For awhile at the beginning, I was wondering if Abigail Reynolds was writing under a new name, but I concluded that Susan Adriani is in fact another highly skilled P&P fanfiction writer. Lots of romance, lots of passion (no, they aren't the same thing), actual plot, and a satisfying conclusion to Wickham's evil misdeeds. The only thing I didn't really find believable is Lydia's transformation. She's too much of a twit to ever really settle down. I would love to see a sequel to thi...more

The writing, overall, was pretty good. It was a romance, however, and I don't really enjoy that genre.

Susan Adriani has been a fan of Jane Austen and her beloved characters for as long as she can remember. Originally from New England, she attended a small art college close to her home, where she majored in illustration. In 2007, after contemplating the unexplored possibilities in one of Miss Austen’s most celebrated novels, Pride and Prejudice, she began to write her first novel-length story, The...more
