Ok, this is a tricky one. Overall, I didn't like it....but I did. So, bias on the table; I do love the show Castle and Kelly Sue DeConnick's script manages to make Derrick Storm sound like his fictional creator. The art, in places, seems to try and make him look like Nathan Fillion. That doesn't work so well. The art is the main problem here but I struggle to explain why. There is just something missing. It's not quite there in a way that makes you look at a page and think 'More could be going o...more

This was pretty ridiculous but I liked it anyway! A graphic novel adaptation of a book written by a character on a television show. Ah, media. I love you.

To be honest, I expected more from Bendis--given his experience with Powers, I expected a little more meta, a little more knowingness from the pulpy bestseller Castle is meant to have made his career on. But for all that it was predictable in the Michael Crichton sort of way, it was still pretty amusing, because it's like a reflection of Castl...more

Brian Bendis, Kelly Sue DeConnick, and Lan Medina create an excellent "adaptation" of "Richard Castle's" first novel. While not as twisty and meaty as Castle's more recent Nikki Heat prose novels, it's still an effective thriller, full of action and suspense. The art, by Medina, is equally effective in the quiet, dialogue scenes as in the moments of action. The script perfectly captures Castle's unique voice, and adapts the novel so smoothly it's impossible to tell if any cuts were made. (I say...more

I don't quite know how to rate this book, on one hand I want to give it 5 stars just because it's Castle, and I LOVE THAT SHOW!! But on the other hand it just isn't a 5 star book.

The plot was like an episode of Castle - full of red herrings, an over the top villain, sexual tension, and a bit of goofiness. Only I didn't find it believable like an episode of the show. It was too rushed and too far out there to come off as real. Furthermore, the characters were a bit to cardboard for me. Those that...more

This graphic novel was pretty fun. For those who don't know, the graphic novel is an adaptation of the books written by the author on the TV show Castle. I could 100% hear the Nathan Fillion character in Derrick Storm. And all the humor and snarkiness from the TV show could be heard in the lines of the graphic novel. The story itself was a bit unbelievable but I think that's the way the Derrick Storm novels are supposed to be. You know over the top and too much. But there were a couple of turns...more

This was a decent story...but I'm totally confused.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that I'm the only person out there who didn't know there was a tv show called Castle.
I'm right aren't I?
I don't really watch tv, so I've never seen it.
P.S. I'm not a pretentious douche who thinks tv rots your brain. I mean, it does...but that's not why I don't watch it.

So this is a graphic novel based on a fake author's book? Except the fake books are called Nikki Heat series, right?
So who is Derric...more

This graphic novel “adaptation” of fictional author Richard Castle’s first book in the Derrick Storm series, Deadly Storm, was rushed. It didn’t allow for a lot of time to get to know Storm, but what did come through was a cross between Castle himself and Jeffrey Donovan’s Michael Weston, just not as kickass or amusing as that combination should be. Even Clara Strike, the inspiration for whom we recently met on the show, wasn’t as compelling as I expected.

What I did like about this volume was t...more

Both the story and the art are what you might expect in a graphic novel marketed to non-format fans -- fine for what it is, but a bigger opportunity was missed. It is neither impressive nor especially fun.

As someone who must repeatedly explain to fans of the TV show that a) Richard Castle is fictional, and b) the Derrick Storm novels do not really exist (at least yet), the lengthy title list on the flap is exasperating. Nowhere is there a disclaimer that these are only mentions from the show (be...more

Being a fan of the show, and falling in love with Marvel (at the time, now head over heels for it) I picked this up as soon as I saw it. I had picked up "Heat wave", but I don't even finish reading it. I think I read one chapter, and remember being disappointed. So needless to say I wasn't expecting too much. But I liked the look of the art, and I was curious.
Imagine my surprise when I actually thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was just plain blown away with how good it was, and now I can't wait t...more

As any good fan of the TV show Castle knows, Nikki Heat is by no means Richard Castle's first famous character. The show starts off with his concluding his long-running Derrick Storm series, and the particular explosive ending he gives those books is a nice little character development point for Castle since it leads right into why he tags along with the NYPD. And given the success of the Nikki Heat tie-in novels, it was pretty much inevitable that additional material involving Derrick Storm wou...more

The people at the ABC show Castle are certainly having a lot of fun with their character, Richard Castle, a mystery novelist who joins up with a police detective to solve crime and then basis a new mystery series on her. Now they are releasing novels under the character's name and this is their first branch into graphic novels. The real author's identity is being kept a secret so far and mystery fans are having lots of fun trying to figure out who it really is.

This "adaptation" of Castle's first...more

A very intriging intruduction to the Derrick Storm universe. After reading it, I only wish the other books in the series really existed, especially seeing as now I have to guess as to how a certain CIA agent comes back from the dead. My guess: Derricks new handler is actually his old handler, although I guess I'll never know until they actually make more. Overall, its an action packed read with a decent plot and fairly good art work. I still love how they have it authored by Richard Castle too....more

Whoever thought to market the books of Castle from the series was a genius. I love getting in the mind of fictional character Richard Castle. He is witty, egotistical, jumps to conclusions, clumsy, jealous, real, and paints a beautiful picture with words.

The story was about what I expected from a Richard Castle plot: a little over the top, kind of goofy, and doesn't take itself very seriously, but still well-written and very entertaining; Moreover, The art was flawless. I'd love to see more of D...more

I enjoyed this book a lot, but it ultimately felt incredibly rushed. The copy editing was shoddy, the art was inconsistent (due to too many artists dividing up the task), and the plot didn't actually fit with what we learn in the "summaries" of the other books in this fictional series printed in the back. For such a high-profile comic marketed to non-comic fans, I would have expected a bit more care and attention. But I can't complain at all about the writing, which was lovely. The characters we...more

On its own terms, this probably wasn't worth 4 stars. But it can't be taken on its own terms: it has to be taken as an adaptation of a book written by the main character of a TV series I love. And if you put it in that context, it earns the 4 stars.

The meta is just fantastic. A forward and about the author written in character by Castle. A reference to Esposito and Ryan in the "making of". Précis of all Richard Castle's other books in the back. And an entertaining little story for a rainy mornin...more

If this wasn't a Castle book, with the classic Castle humor, I would have given it 2 stars. The humor is there in plenty, and you can easily hear Nathan Fillion reading off Storm's lines, but I don't think this is the right medium for this kind of story. The plot, as well as the humor, came on at lightning pace... not really giving the reader a chance to absorb the plot details or laugh at the jokes. In the end, everything just felt too rushed and confusing to be enjoyable. Read it if you want t...more

The first adventure of Derrick Storm and it's straight to graphic novel unlike the other tie-in's. I think I would have preferred it to have been a novel rather than a graphic novel. The story is very rushed and could have done with a few more pages. The artwork wasn't the greatest. Most notable were the faces. Sometimes the characters looked like they had Downs Syndrome where in others then looked like they were trying to hide chestnuts in their cheeks.

All in all in wasn't a great first outing,...more

An interesting graphic rendition of the first book in the other set of spin off novels from the TV show Castle. I didn't enjoy this story or these characters as much as I do the Niki Heat stories, probably because of the setting and subject matter. I haven't read the actual Derrick Storm novels yet, and based on this, I probably won't. While Derrick Storm DOES investigate things, and is somewhat interesting, he's not working in the same police procedural format as the Niki Heat books and the Cas...more

Even though I'm a fan of Richard Castle's Nikki Heat books, I've never had a chance to read any of his more well-known Derrick Storm series (they are, alas, all out of print and hard to find). So when I learned that there would be a graphic novel adaptation of the first book in the series, Deadly Storm, I was quite pleased. And although the format makes it into a quick read, it is a thoroughly enjoyable adventure with sparks of Castle's familiar style of wit. I hope to see more of the series tol...more

Okay this is my first comic book (ahem) graphic novel ever so I can only talk about my experience reading it and how it relates to the franchise.

I am a bit of a speed reader so it took some adjustment for me to not just skim the text and move on, but to actually take in and enjoy the art -which, by the way, is amazing. I'm still flipping through it and re-examining all of it. The collaboration between Marlowe and Mavel is fantastic. This has to be Castle's voice, but Castle before he met Becket...more

I love that this exists but it feels a little thrown together. A graphic novelization of the "first" Derrick Storm book (which doesn't actually exist!): SO GREAT. Excellent world building. But the mystery and the characters are lackluster (something about Nicaragua, Contras, and gold) and the storytelling doesn't capture the zingy style of Richard Castle the character on Castle or Richard Castle the writer of the Nikki Heat books. (Although you could counter this as further myth-building: Castle...more

As a fan of the show Castle I have heard so much about his first big series character Derrick Storm. When the first season starts we find out that Castle has killed off his money making character, Derrick Storm, and he begins to shadow a female New York city cop who becomes his new big character Nikki Heat. As the show progresses we the viewer get to learn little bits and pieces of the Derrick Storm story line.Marvel comics has put together a graphic novel which gives us the first chapter in the...more

I like the TV series, so I borrowed this from my sister. It was a fun read, even lighter than the TV series. Art was so-so. I have not read any of the "Richard Castle" novels that have come out the past few summers, so I don't really know the voice of Richard Castle. But this was not how I heard one of his books in my head. It sounds too much like the character of Castle. Perhaps that is really the point. For fans of the show, this graphic novel is a fun read.
Donald
Decent enough effort that gets a lot of mileage from readers' investment in the show Castle and the "reputation" that the character Derrick Storm has from that. The whole time I am imagining Richard Castle writing this piece with all the over-the-top ridiculousness that goes along with that.

I can't say how this would stand on it's own without the tie-in, but I can only guess that it would suffer if you were not a prior fan of the show.
Steve
As a stand alone graphic novel this book is just OK, the story is kind of flat, the dialogue takes some strange jumps a couple of times, and the art is merely passable. As a part of the "Castle" experience though it is fun, when the mediocrity of the plot of this fake novel is put into the context of the show it makes sense and the "also by this author" blurbs for the other non-existent books (as well as the three Nikki Heat Novels) are fun.
Rebecca
So far, I can tell you it's usually bad news when it takes me more than one day to finish a comic. This is day three. I'll probably finish this tonight, but there's no great urgency. I don't have to know who did it. I could easily bring this back to the library and never think about it again. But I won't. I'll finish it and come back to give my rating...

ETA: Although I finished this one, I returned the second volume without cracking the cover. No thanks.
Christopher
The cover art is great. The inside art is reasonable. The art does improve throughout the book.

The story is very interesting. Not great, but entertaining.

Now I am going to nitpick about the typography. I found the typewriter like font too harsh when Derrick Storm was thinking to himself. I assume you are supposed to believe the author is typing out the story. I do not think it works all that well.
