I really wanted to give this one four stars but I can't. The problem is all with the female lead and her moronic behavior.

This had a very engaging story, a decent mystery, some good suspense and an angsty, but plausible romance. I did look forward to getting back to the book every time I had to set it down so that's where all three stars come from. I also liked the male lead, Mickey Drake. It's Cassie Hart, an ER doctor, who is the big problem.

Everything starts fine, but within a scene or two, H

From the moment this reader met Dr. Cassandra Hart, dealing with extreme claustrophobia while riding in a medical helicopter with a patient, I was in her corner.
I was also in her corner later in the story when Cassie made some foolish decisions putting herself in grave danger. There were times I wanted to grab her shoulders and shake her for those choices. In some books, that would have been a deal breaker and I would have tossed the book aside. Thank goodness, I didn’t have to do that. Throw

A cross between ER and NYPD Blue, Nerves of Steel is, hands down, one of the best Medical romances I have read to date. Cassandra Hart's character deals with more than just typical drug overdoses, she's dealing with an unstable ex and his vindictive family as well. Throw in drug dealers and her life gets a little bit messy. Enter Detective Mickey Drake. The chemistry between Cassie and Drake is electrifying and not just at certain moments, the emotional pull continues throughout the book. The bo ...more
"Nerves of Steel" by C J Lyons was a wonderful read. I simply could not put it down until I was finished with it! Indeed CJ Lyons is good medical suspense thriller writer. By her being a doctor she knows how to bring out the best of what a reader needs to know about the subject. You definitely are lead to feel that you are in the hospital with all that is going on while working on a case with the detectives. Cassie Hart was a ER doctor in Pittsburgh and the story starts with her dealing with dru ...more

CJ Lyons is a wonderful author when it comes to writing medical thrillers. I was hooked by this book and can’t wait to read more. The characters come to life and it feels as if you are in the hospital with the doctors and working the case with the detectives. Cassie is an ER doc who is trying to save her patents from forms of drug being used on the street called FX. Drake is a detective on the task force put together to stop the FX. The latest batch of FX to hit the streets is from Cassie’s hosp ...more

Recommends it for: Anyone who enjoys a good story!
I've just discovered CJ Lyons and I'm definitely hooked! I enjoyed this medical thriller and found myself drawn into the story very quickly. Yes, sometimes I had to wonder what the characters were thinking when they took particular actions, but, for me, it didn't detract. I recommend - it's a good read. (Nerves of Steel was a free e-book and the first book I had read by this author. I read purely for enjoyment, not to pick apart the book or author. I loved this book, was hooked immediately and w ...more

I would like to start by saying I like CJ Lyons, ok let me amend I like CJ Lyons's Lucy Guardino. So for me, she's a great author who can manage to create strong, balanced female characters which is why I read this book to start with.

Now, let me say that, man, Cassie Hart just got on my nerves! She's one of those irritating, teeth-grounding type of heroines I dislike. Unconsistent, reckless to the point of stupid, supposedly an ER doctor so we would assume fairly intelligent but the intelligent

Cassandra Hart has a lot of problems in this book. A street drug is causing users to have horrible symptoms, spasms and ugh. So, Cassie has a lot of people in her ER with this drug complication. She finds a bag of FX, the new street drug, on one of her patients. Now she needs to decide what to do with this pack-o-drugs. Does she follow hospital protocol? Of course not.

She marches into the police station with FX bag in hand and runs smack dab into Mickey "DJ" Drake, part artist, part bum and all

I found this book in the mystery section purely by accident. Too bad it's not shelved in romance since it is definitely one. Anyway, Cassie is an e.r. doctor and works hard to help people. But she has issues: an ex-husband who abused her and ghosts from her past. I had to work hard to like her. She's strong yet weak too. I got a little tired of her secrets, know what I mean? And she runs away rather than dealing with them. Then there's the hunky detective Drake. He's drawn to her immediately, no ...more

I wanted to like this book based on the reviews, but as I was reading I just grew more frustrated at the stupid things that Cassie did - going to a rave?? Also, how many times do people almost kill you? Don't think I will read the rest of the series, althought I am curious to how many injuries Hart and Drake can live through. Also, the ex-husband was over the top. Can't imagine a hospital hiring him back as a surgeon, don't care whose upir family is.

I've known about author CJ Lyons for quite some time because of various interviews she's done, but I just started reading her recently. There is, without a doubt, a reason she has earned the reputation she has. Dr. Cassandra Hart is a strong, compelling heroine, and the plot of this novel -- the emergence of a new designer drug on the streets that's killing young people in horrific ways at an alarming rate -- had me from the start. Great pacing, strong writing, and a sizzling love story between ...more

This book allows you to see into the life of a detective and an ER doctor as they try to save lives and find the bad strain of drugs that is killing Hart’s patients. Lyons does a great job of creating characters that were likable and believable. There is plenty of action and suspense and the end is sure to surprise you. This is a great combination of love, compassion, heartbreak and suspense.

* strong, likable main characters
* supporting characters have relevance to the story throughout

Nerves of Steel (Hart and Drake Book 1) by CJ Lyons I received a free kindle copy of Nerves of Steel (Hart and Drake Book 1) by CJ Lyons in an Amazon promotion in exchange for a fair review.

I absolutely love meeting Hart & Drake. CJ Lyons is my favorite suspense thriller writer. This is another five star read!

"I'm not going to walk out again. I'm not going to abandon you in dark places. I'm not going away like your parents did. I will always be here for you." Drake told Hart.

'Nerves of Steel' had me glued to the pages from the beginning and didn't let go. The storyline was well written and well thought out. The way this story unfolded was full of suspense, mystery, action, romance and very thrilling. I love how Cassie and Drake, as stubborn as they both are, were drawn together. They had a great partnership of sorts. The characters were great. This is a series I'll definitely read more of. A great add to your tbr list. I found CJ Lyons writing style captivating. An ...more

Nerves Of Steel was the 3rd CJ Lyon's Book I have read. After Reading both FBI Special Agent Lucy Guardino Books I was hooked on this Author! I was not disappointed in the least as this story took off from page one and kept me hopping from page to page on my Kindle.

From The Exciting opening chapters I Loved Dr Hart. It took me a while to warm up to Drake because he is not your expected leading man type. He has a past. I was a bit put off by his mysterious and macho side but his vulnerable and se

I cannot rate this book, because I haven't finished it. It's not inherently bad, but it's also not worth my time right now, when I could be reading books better suited for my taste.

The characters were meh, a bit flat, and the writing wasn't exactly stellar either to be honest. A plus point though were the correct medical terms, which is always important to me in books. You can really see the author's medical background.

Maybe I will give it another chance one day.

Cassandra Hart is an EDR physician, divorced from her physically abusing/rehabilitated drug/alcohol addict and orthopedic specialist ex-husband. A young girl is admitted to the Emerg, a victim of a drug overdose. Cassie finds a bag of drugs with the hospital's logo on them among the girl's belongings. She suspects they are the cause of the young girl's OD. She takes the bag to the local police dept. but instead of being appraised for her actions, she is looked upon with suspicion. Fast-paced, page-turning, nonstop action. Nerves of Steel is a well told, engaging story about finding the source of a prescription drug finding its way on the street with catastrophic effects. An engaging thriller with a love story woven in with the action.

Loved this book. The author develops her characters so well and leads into the dark world of drug addiction. Would highly recommend this book.

The book was ok, but it took me FOREVER to get through. Not quite sure why, but it didn't hold my interest like others by the same author. I could put the book down and not return for a couple days, which is not common for me.

Typical romantic suspense. Hart is a young female ER doctor with a challenging past. Drake is the detective on the abuse of prescription drugs resulting in deaths case.

What a fun read! From page 1 to the end, the story is fast and engaging. I did not want to stop reading until it was finished. The ER medical details are fantastic. I dont read many thrillers but I was surprised how much I enjoyed reading this one. I really liked Hart even though some of her actions were kind of silly. I mean, what kind of woman goes to an abandoned building hoping to get information from homeless drug addicts? Yet, I was able to put my disbelief aside because Hart and Drake are ...more
