However, in spite of her tragic family history and Tarot Alley’s reputation for being a mystical hotspot, Sophie has no psychic powers of her own – or so she thinks. Engaged to straight-as-an-arrow Boston PD Detective Roger Paris, and finishing her colleg ...more

Where I got the book: purchased for my Kindle.

An enjoyable paranormal mystery with a strong romance arc. I don't usually read paranormals, but having interviewed Sam Hunter about the interesting question of pursuing both traditional and self-publishing (in different genres), I was intrigued enough to give one of her self-published books a go.

The story: Sophie Hunter blacks out while giving a Tarot reading for a close friend, and when she comes to herself a murder has been committed. Naturally sh
I have read Samantha Hunter's Harlequin Blaze titles in the past and have always enjoyed them. She brings a little suspense into her romance titles and has always done a great job with it. Past Tense is her first foray into the mystery genre. I think she has done a wonderful job. Past Tense had a way of sucking me right into the story beside of Sophie as things happened. I felt like I got to know Sophie as she came to know herself and like I took part in every scene. I was just so absorbed in th ...more
I was invited to review the 2nd book in this series so I decided to read this one and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it! It has a mystery with psychic elements which I definitely love!

13 years before, Sophie's dad and aunt were gunned down and she fell down the stairs. She had amnesia so she did not have any memory of that day. The family ran a shop that specialize in tarot-reading as well as other things. Sophie taught herself to read tarots and she knew that many clients believed her aunt

I found this paranormal mystery refreshingly different from all the vampire and shifter books flooding the market at the moment. It's more of a "ghost whisperer" book with some serious twists, angry ghosts and a high amount of danger and tension. Sophie is the heroine, and she's about as down to earth and "real" as any character I've ever read. She's been through a lot, and has to go through a lot more in order to solve the murder she's accused of committing, but she takes it in stride for the m ...more
This book had such a satisfying ending…and you can't always say that about the first book in a series! I loved Sophie more and more as the book progressed. The Tarot, psychic and ghost elements were so compelling and the mystery kept me curious to the last. Definitely looking forward to the next book.
Loved it through & through. The author does an excellent job of giving us characters that could be people you know. Sophie Tucker comes from a family of psychics. She believes she does not share these talents so becomes a tarot reader instead. Up until the early hours of the morning because
I was hooked and just ahd to know what happenes and just who is what here. I found myself smiling and gratified for Sophie as she makes some life realizations and embraces the upheavil of change that promi
I wasn't so sure that I would care too much for a psychics story and then i started reading. I loved that the the main character Sophie Turner acts like a real person. the story doesn't fall into the stereotypical story of a psychic, but relays the trials and tribulations of a normal person who just happens to be special. The mystery solving while learning to find oneself made you sit at the edge of your seat wanting to know more. I recommend this book for those who love romance mingled in with ...more

Samantha Hunter lives in Syracuse, NY, where after working as a university writing instructor for ten years she's began writing full-time at home. Her first book was a Harlequin Blaze, Virtually Perfect (July 2004), which was the very first book she ever wrote and submitted (so don't think it can't happen!). Since, she's written seven more Blaze books, with more on the horizon.
