One of my favorite Simpsons scenes finds Marge and Homer at some vegetarian friends home. Chickpeas and something is the answer every time the couple gets asked what a dish is. I love chickpeas. I love lentils. And quinoa and kale and tomatoes and cauliflower. In this cookbook, chef Dino Weierman shares recipes for what he calls “international vegan fare.”

He remains chatty throughout and says things such as:

The negative comments in this cookbook really turned me off. Comments such as "It [a salad served to author at a banquet] was so disgusting that I couldn't take another bite without wanting to emit the contents of my stomach all over the jerk [a diner at author's table who wanted some meat]..." and rants about how North Indians don't know how to cook a certain dish perhaps are OK on a blog, but I don't think they belong in a cookbook. The rating is strictly for the quality of the recipes. If you're put off by obnoxious people and can't get past that in a cookbook like I can, you may want to avoid this one.

Lots of personality. I liked the focus on customization. For me, though, the base-level recipes were too complicated.
