As the cover artist for the book, I got a guest pass to read the first half of the book. I've read some passages that J.D. would post, but NOTHING compares to the teaser I was able to read. The writing is detailed and vivid, and it's clean and easy to read.. I fell in love with the characters, and particularly one :) and the storyline so far is keeping me turning the pages. I loved this book! If you took the torturous pasts/character depth from Lover Awakened (only young adult), mix in some magic from The Initiation and The Captive, Part I, and blend it together with the direct writing in the first Vampire Academy... you would get this book. I read this book before most of the other people. There are a few typos in the middle of the book, but not enough to detract from the amazing storyline. I did not notice any strange indentations. I truely LOVED this book! I admit it is my first witch story but it has hooked me in. The way that J.D. Straube writes is beautiful and compelling. This book is very addicting and I'm so excited to get sucked into the next one. This was an intoxicating read that people will fall in love with.

This is a very interesting fantasy novel. The author includes many twists to keep the reader on the edge of his/her seat. The ending is not predictable at all-a little unexpected. The reader will enjoy getting to know the characters and watching their progress and growth in the novel; there are a few sudden character development traits that might leave the reader a little confused for a few seconds, but it doesn't detract much from the story.

-I really enjoyed how the author uses Savannah's memories of her parents to convey their downward spiral into the darkness.
-The romance and how it was handled in the end was a complete surprise, and one that I felt really worked wonderfully in this story.
-That cover! It truly is GORGEOUS!

Airing of the Grievances:

(let it be known that my grievances aren't problems with the writing of the story, more like things that made me growl and groan during the reading of the book. these can actually be things that made the story better.)
-Back to Ash - what was up with the way he let his friends treat Savannah? I had a really hard time loving him because of this. In fact this is probably the biggest grievance I have with this entire book.
-Isis and Griffin are jerks! I can't figure out why Ash is friends with them. He actually admits to not liking Isis, but continues to hang out with her because of Griffin.
-Let's just say Griffin wouldn't be my best friend.
-Liam - he's as spineless as he is pretty. Enough said!

To Sum it All Up:

Caged in Darkness was a great read that kept me emotionally involved throughout. Whether I was freaking out about what a jerk someone was, or loving how amazing someone else was, I was constantly feeling. This book was easy to read because it never felt overly descriptive or character driven, it was the perfect balance between the two. I appreciated that the book had an ending even though there is another book in the series. I will most definitely being reading Caged by Damnation, book 2 of the Caged series.(less)

I was invited to read and review Caged in Darkness by J.D. Stroub, from the author’s invitation, and I am very glad that I read this one. The book captures the best of my guilty pleasure reading, that of Young Adult coming of age stories.

Savannah, the main character is a sixteen year old on the threshold between the nursery and the adult world. Savanah has found a sanctuary from her parents, who appear at first the embodiment of evil. But then her world is tipped over when she accidently bumps a box over and releases a devil from his crystal palace. The devil is now bent on killing and possessing the innocent in order to regain his strength.
The book reminded me of Dawson’s creek and the love triangle between Joey, Dawson, and Pacey. The kids are so hormonally charged and have no real way to deal with this energy that the sparks lay right at the surface, and are about to light into a dramatic volcano. J.D. Stroub then adds a bit of the supernatural to the mix and the volcano spouts in a captivating young-love story.
Stroub’s understanding of the teen years is apparent; she perfectly describes the psychology behind teenager’s complicated and intense feelings. She mixes this psychology with a sense of humor in order to lift the reader up from the intensity.
One problem I had, which was probably my own fault, was the switch of narrators. I would be reading and then ask, “Wait who’s talking here? Okay its Ash, so this is a guy’s perspective, which makes sense.” This at times distracted from the overall story. But the different narrators did add something to the overall effect of the story.
Stroub’s research into the supernatural was great. It left me wanting to find out more about witches in history, the role of the niphilim, and fallen angels. I wish she would have spent a little more time developing the setting. I wanted to know more about the town in which the story takes place.
I was hooked throughout the book and definitely was entertained by J.D. Stroub. I can’t wait to read another one by her, there are so many possibilities.

Wow! The end just hit me like a ton of bricks! I did NOT see that one coming! I am utterly baffled, and honestly, quite heartbroken. I would have rated this book a four had it not been for the last chapter. And I'm not rating it so low because I didn't agree with the end, but because in hindsight, the book wasn't written as well as I originally thought it was. As in the end made no sense at all because it came from NOWHERE. Instead of tying it everything together, you're left going WTH.

Overall, I liked the book (even though it wasn't anything special), but I had a LOT of problems with it.

First of all, the book was written in three points of view - Savannah, Ash and Liam - and while it's nice to be able to see what the three were thinking, I was annoyed from having to keep switching between the three. And then I find out that the points of views were not really the points of views - I know that just sounded confusing, but you'll understand what I mean after you finish the book. I feel like I've been led on only to be entirely disappointed.

The other thing that really bothered me about this was the characters themselves. The characters were poorly written because I couldn't grasp what their personalities were. Savannah was so wishy-washy, especially when it came to the guys, but also with everything else. Her character just infuriated me at times. And I was frustrated with Ash and Liam's hot-cold personalities. You think it's explainable at the end, but it's not. It did not explain why Ash would escape to Griffin's house. And he was there a lot, but he still had feelings.

As you can tell, the end is a HUGE part of why I don't like this book. It just DOES NOT make sense. It felt like it was just written in there at the end to throw the readers off, but I don't see how it ties the whole story together. It doesn't explain why HE has always loved her, and I still can't grasp how HIS presence has been weave throughout everything. It wasn't written in very well.

The last part that is bugging me is I'm hoping a lot of my confusion will be answered in the sequel. Seeing from the summary, I don't think it will be. Stroube's website says the book was released a week ago, but I can't find it anywhere! I liked the book enough, but now, I'm just extremely irked.(less)

I have to say that this book grabbed me at the start, and at the end left me with my mouth hanging open in shock. The overall plot was exciting, and I was anxious to see where things were going and what would happen next.

Savannah's story was heartbreaking. The character development made me feel for Savannah, and each twist and turn left me wondering where she was going to end up. At the end all I can say is wow. I completely didn't see it coming.

Could use an editor: has wording, punctuation issues that could be easily corrected.

This book is what I would expect would be written for a young adult/teen audience. The writing lacks the roundness I expect from an experienced author. Overall it’s somewhat juvenile. If not for a few more mature audience items I might recommend this for a pre-teen audience.

So the premise of this book was great. I liked the fact that she had been tortured and neglected by her parents and had to escape. But then what happened? All of a sudden Savannah is the interest of another coven. they waited until right before her ascension to be interested in her at all. No. let's not try to sway her while we know of her existence and have a better shot at making a connection while she is younger...So Liam i...more This started off really good. All of a sudden Savannah is the interest of another coven. they waited until right before her ascension to be interested in her at all. No. let's not try to sway her while we know of her existence and have a better shot at making a connection while she is younger...So Liam is sent to seduce her? That was ridiculous. It would have been fine if there would have been more of an effort made in convincing the reader, as well as Savannah, that she was actually being seduced. I mean she just meets the guy and he ends up fighting with Ash, and she automatically takes his side? I don't think so. That did not fit into Savannah's past or her personality. It made no sense at all. But let's not stop there...she then makes out with the guy? Not only does she make out with Liam but then she decides she wants Ash too. Yeah...Is it really every girls dream to go from invisible to whore? I wasn't aware.
So after she reads the text to Liam that he needs to up his efforts on seducing her, she runs home to Ash and makes out with him. This girl is horrible. Absolutely thoughtless. Cruel, and down right selfish. I no longer felt sorry for her after that. i'm sorry but being caged for 9 years of your 15/16 year old life doesn't excuse her behaviour. It's not like she didn't pick up on what was or was not acceptable in relationships from being in high school.
Anyway, so then there is no explanation to Savannah on Liam's part to absolve himself. You just see from Ash's perspective that she has obviously forgiven him since she allowed him to kiss her--after telling Ash she was going all out with him...? Again...this doesn't make sense. I couldn't see someone having gone through what Savannah did, being so quick to forgive a guy she barely knew after he was "seducing her" and betraying her trust. But I must say that I think seeing what Liam had to say for himself is something that the reader should have had access to. It was rather important in my opinion since it was made out to be such a big deal for a good portion of the book.
There is a half-assed introductory to Kali...which still doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I get it, you needed to know there were Hell Hounds since Willow is then made out to be one. I just thought it was cheap and lazy the way she was brought into the story. There really should have been some background on all of the other characters that this book encompassed.
Why in the hell was Savannah given a panther bond? Really? That just came out of no where. It wasn't even used as a way to try and convince Savannah she needed to join a different Coven. Actually...that never did take place at all. It was just a path that ended up going nowhere that really could have been played well if there would have been more effort to the storyline. I am still confused as to why it was necessary that Savannah have this animal bond. A missed opportunity to make this story all the more interesting.
I liked the idea behind what was going on with Asmodeus, but again, it was rushed and left without a lot of explanation and creativity when it came down to it. Like the fact that he was possessing the two guys Savannah had started whoring herself out to. Does she get mad like most people would if they found this out? No. Instead, she decides that she is actually in love with Asmodeus! Come on!
And do not get me started on the fact that rather than going to the covens and working together against the Fallen Angel, Savannah thinks it is best she take him on herself....or with a tiny group of people who you have no idea of their abilities.
The ending was tasteless. Making it appear she was going to kill herself...ugh, that was so tacky. And what little respect I had for Savannah disappeared with that.

All in all, this story really had some potential! And I was duped with the prologue. The play on words was amazing. I was really thinking this was going to be an awesome book. But there were so many missed opportunities to make this book a really great read. It felt slapped together. And in the end I was really disappointed.(less)

She's about to come into her power, and she has attracted the interest of a rival coven. But she also is going to face a legacy from her past, one with deadly consequences...

I thought it was good to see a broken heroine that actually was broken and wrestled with the issues that came with it. Savannah in the start has serious issues: she has nightly screaming fits, doesn't trust anyone, and even as she matures she still shows issues like not liking confined spaces, or lashing out at people when surprised. The idea of the typical love triangle was extended a little bit with one of the interests doing it because he was ordered to for political reasons, and the other having natural emotional reasons to, as he acted as a protector and spiritual center for a damaged girl. There's some decent ideas too: dark witches justifying themselves as being more grey and morally pragmatic, while not evil.

Unfortunately the book loses focus after and starts to add things and scenes that don't really work well. Savannah for one seemed to change radically from her fifteenth to her sixteenth birthday, and the damaged child aspect of her plot seemed muted or dropped entirely at times. She also gets a serious case of boy craziness that really isn't justified well in the plot, although at least she recognizes it in part. The "deadly consequence" I mentioned feels tacked on, especially with the way it ends. And one last problem is that despite Savannah's history and potential for power, and despite that deadly consequence ravaging the town, there is little to no action by the white magic coven or even the dark magic one. They both leave her more or less alone.

The author is doing a "special edition" of this book, so it might be worth holding off to get that one. It's a decent book, and YA paranormal readers will like it, but it gets a little too random and scattershot at the end to really go beyond ok/liked it.(less)

Shelves: kindle

This book was a quick read and a great story until after the halfway point. Then, things started happening that threw me off track (e.g., total character alterations, unbelievable circumstances) which altered my overall enjoyment of the book. I also disliked the ending.

NOTE: I thought it was interesting that the editor added her name next to the author's on the Kindle version of this book. I really like reading new authors and giving them support. But when I see so many spelling, punctuation, or...more
