Continuing on with book two in Carofiglio's most excellent series, time and Guido Guerrieri have both moved along some two years since the events of the previous novel, Involuntary Witness. Now Guerrieri is in a comfortable relationship, he's started cooking, and has recently been mulling over the fact that he's approaching middle age. In his professional life, he is serving as attorney to a woman who has pressed charges against her former boyfriend. Martina Fumai now lives at a secret refuge fo ...more

Carofiglio is just so dependable, you know? His writing is so engaging . . . it draws you in without intruding on the story he has to tell. For instance, here are the opening sentences. "You never quit smoking. You give up for a while. Days, months, years. But you never quit completely. Cigarettes are always there, lying in wait." And by the way, this is not just a great opening. The cigarettes do figure in the book.

Characters? Here again, Carofiglio is great. Sister Claudia is great--a bit of a

È strano, ho letto diversi libri di diver ...more

Excellent court room drama set in Bari, Italy. I really enjoy the main character who, while a bit cynical, will still take on cases that others avoid. Was also impressed with how much plot the author was able to squeeze into a rather short book. Listened to the audio version which was narrated by Sean Barrett who is fast becoming one of my favorites.

Second in the Guido Guerrieri of Bari, Italy, series.

Guerrieri takes on a case out of sheer perversity, one he figures he has no chance of winning--that of a woman who is accusing the son of a prominent, politically influential judge of domestic violence. it’s her word against his, she has a history of depression; although Guerrieri has the assistance of a competent public prosecutor who is also an advocate of women’s rights, there is much stacked against Marina.

There is nothing particularly ori

This translation from the original Italian was excellent. The author is a (former?) prosecuting lawyer in southern Italy, as is his character, who lives and works in the city of Bari. I love the crime and mystery genre, and have an especially soft spot for Italian mysteries, by Italians or by any other nationalities. (And Greek crime novels, and Spanish, and French, and ... .) This one is a standout. The characters and plot are original, the lawyer's personal relationships unexpectedly interesti ...more

A former anti-Mafia prosecutor in Bari, Carofiglio writes legal thrillers. A Walk in the Dark is the third book I have read by him and, honestly, I couldn't put it down. Carofiglio writes these relatively short books that feel leisurely yet dense at the same time. The character of attorney Guido Guerrieri is honest, flawed and endlessly fascinating.

This case is not about solving a crime but the aftermath of a series of crimes, legal proceedings against the son of a prominent judge who is a stal

Potendo avrei dato tre stelle e mezzo, sinceramente tre sarebbero poche. Mi riservo di leggere qualche altro titolo.

I love books that make me cry. This one brought tears streaming down my face in a cleansing, uplifting release of emotion. Avvocato Guido Guerrieri is an immensely likeable character who is courageous and smart yet very human in his fallibility. The story is suspenseful and like the Montalbano series filled with interesting details of Italian life.

A fine follow up to 'Involuntary Witness'. The strength of these books is not in the plot, but in the character of the narrator. Carofiglio has created a lawyer that we can empathise with - a truly difficult task. This is man who has recovered from a severe depression in the first book and who redeems himself through his work. Trouble is he still doesn't think much of himself or his work. The character is flawed (who isn't?) but I felt attracted to him as he struggles to confront his demons (suc ...more

Carofiglio has a unique style of writing, fairly simple and leisurely, like an Italian siesta. He spares the reader much of the descriptive garbage other writers feel is so necessary.

Excellent. Much better than Involuntary Witness. Carofiglio has obviously matured as a writer between that book and this one. Highly recommended. I want to read more.

This is Carofiglio's second book starring defense lawyer Guido Guerrieri, and the third that I've read. It's the best by far. It's a short book that comes to the main story pretty quickly, the story of a woman being stalked and abused by a vicious man whose father is a powerful judge. Two lawyers have already refused to help her fearing retribution. The woman is assisted by a Sister who runs a secretive shelter for battered women.

As in the other books, the story is told chronologically which me

The second book of the Guerrieri-series. This time the lawyer defends a woman who was abused by her partner. The trouble about this case is that the father of the accused person is some kind of VIP in the local jurisdiction. So again, the author shows his heart for underdogs and the weak. Also included in the plot is the story of child abuse, which makes it sometimes hard and depressing to read. Speaking of depressions: the protagonist seems to have overcome his mental instability - nevertheless ...more

The third i have read one after the other, from this author and I really, really enjoy these books and wish there were more waiting. The author is former attorney in Italy, who put away influential criminals and Mafia members in his country. His protagonist, also criminal lawyer, is self deprecating and a very interesting personality, whom you never expect to win out in court, but he always does. Similar to Connolly's Hieronymous Bosch. The Title in English is A Walk in the Dark.

Guido Guerrieri is an Italian lawyer in Bari whose first person musings on the Law, relationships, life’s challenges and moral ambiguities pave the way through this interesting story about his latest client, an abused woman who decides to take her ex-boyfriend before the court. The story is full of irony, social comment and sharp satirical bursts of word-play. It alerted me to consider the translator, without whose skills I would not be able to enjoy this author’s work. A thoroughly enjoyable book. Part legal drama, part police drama, the book is fast paced, easy to read and has an engaging plot.

The main character of guido, the lawyer, has issues but still manages to be an excellent lawyer who is really rather like able. The other characters are also believable as real people. There are also two surprise outcomes at the end of this.

I'm looking forward to reading more from carofiglio.

This is another fine character driven legal drama featuring Guido Guerrieri. The case this time involves an action brought by a young woman who is accusing her ex-lover of abuse. The ex, a professor and the son of a powerful judge, seems to be untouchable. It looks like a hopeless cause, but that's what draws Guido to it.

Carofiglio writes so well, and his characters resonate. He has a fine ear for the rococo - even operatic - language of the Italian legal system, and personal knowledge of the li

This was good, although not as I expected. It's a crime novel, but it is more about the lives of the characters with the crime wrapped in. It's worth reading and interesting to read about a different legal system and process.
