...more

Wow, I really wanted to like this book, it seemed that it would be intersting, and it almost was. It had the elements of a short story and it dragged because it was made into a novel. The characters were hollow accept for the "Hero" Barefoot, but even then... The story telling was disjointed and confusing, I often had to double back in a chapter to see if I skipped a major event that was being discussed or I needed explanaiton that was skipped over. The non-sequesntial stroy telling can be done ...more

I read this book on the original language (Swedish) and it really is one of the best books in Swedish literature for a very long time. It takes you through adventures both amazing and horrible and feelings of joy and despise. The reason it doesn't get five stars is that on occasion it gets somewhat pretentious but overall it is a great piece.

It really is a shame about the title. I just know how a title like this puts me off reading the book and I would never have read it unless two colleagues o

I really liked this book. I thought it was great and it is a Swedish novel I would certainly recommend to everyone!

The story follows our protagonist Hercule Barfuss. He is born a dwarf with a severely deformed body. He is deaf and cannot speak. However, he has been given the gift of being able to read other people's thoughts. An incredibly moving and at times horrendous story which follows Hercule's life over about 80 years.

What really makes this book stand out, at least

Horrific Sufferings of the Mind-Reading Monster Hercules Barefoot: His Wonderful Love and His Terrible HatredNow you have finished wondering at the title we can, oh, you want a little more time with it, ok. The Horrific Sufferings of the Mind-Reading Monster Hercules Barefoot: His Wonderful Love and his Terrible Hatred. Ok can we continue.

- histor

Although the characters are quite one dimensional, and despite that the heroine is a damsel in distress dressed like an angel in white, and despite a few turns of the story that feel illogical and therefore disturb the flow of the story, I really enjoyed the book. Despite that the love Hercule feels for Henriette is manic and obsessive the book manages to say something important about love and hate and human nature. It's a brave book in the sense that it allows love to prevail over hate and sorr ...more

Deeply layered, rich characters, dark and foreboding, yet full of hope. Incredibly researched. Imaginative, seductive, surprising, a dream of a book from which I did not want to awaken.

This is a page turner, for sure. I couldn't really quit once I'd gotten a chapter or two into it. It reminded me of another carnivalesque "freak" novel, Geek Love. But I liked this one a lot better than Geek Love. Despite the fact that this novel sometimes seems to be "a series of unfortunate events" it has an underlying optimism and love for its characters that keep it from getting too bleak. And it does get bleak, yes indeedy do. Dickensian bleak without the Dickensian filter shielding us from ...more

This one was fairly grotesque and hard to handle in parts (the description of the protagonist gives me the serious willies, par example), but as you all may have started to learn about me, I like reading about grodie stuff in books. I thought the pacing was interesting (a.k.a. kinda bad) in that the author was very quick about moving the action from one major event to another, yet he tends to expound excessively on some of the more mundane details of the story. I liked the ending; I liked the da ...more

This was a pretty weird book. Not bad weird, but it was definitely not what I was expecting. Much like Life of Pi, it was extremely gory in parts, which seemed unnecessary but definitely added to the whole idea of the intensity of the main character's hatred. It reminded me a little of The Count of Monte Cristo...it's a book about revenge and forgiveness. It also reminded me of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (though I'm going off the Disney movie since I've never read the book). The main female cha ...more

Edebi yönünün gücü ve içerdiği mesajlarla mutlaka ...more

This book takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of emotions. While the book captures the essence of Hercules' character it also leaves the reader with a sense of pessimistic optimism. Hercules, the mind reading monster, gets the only thing he wanted--love, from the only person he wanted it from--Henrietta. However, circumstances lead Hercules on a search for revenge. This book is truly heart-breaking. One finds oneself filled with self-disgust. It brings out the fact that humanity is so unsa ...more

This Swedish novel had the perfect elements and settings which could have made it an extraordinary book: a deformed mind-reading "hero", overwhelmed by love and hate, living his life in a bordello, a freak show, a Jesuit monastery, an asylum and many more. Although the storyline and its characters remained too shallow for me to fully appreciate, the book wasn't bad and was definitely fun to read.

fantastic novel!
Dramatika
Grotesque and ugly, yet divinely kind and exceptionally talented. That is the main character. Too bad the author focuses too much in the physical troubles of the poor man, not enough on his mind. The story feels very familiar and predictable, despite the amazing potential.
