Winter weather is keeping children from visiting the zoo. So the animals are out of sorts—listless, grumpy, and no longer fun. All except two little friends, a very small hippo and a baby kangaroo. Their hip-hopping, toe-tapping, and rap-rocking soon has the other animals joining in the hip-aroo beat. "Racoons danced in pairs, baboons danced in troops, and snakes joined th...more

ZooZical is a new picture book written by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Marc Brown. This is the type of book that screams to be picked up and shared with children. Those of you who love Marc Brown will really enjoy the illustrations too. This hardcover is big and bright, so are the characters.

Pretty cute. I am prone to dislike rhyming books. They grate on me. But this one, I like. The rhyme rolls right off the tongue, doesn't feel forced, and is full of fun phrases, to boot.
It's winter and no one is coming to the zoo. Families are staying home where it's warm, schools aren't taking field trips to outdoor locations. The animals are bored, bored, bored, until one little hippo hops out of the way of a collapsing large hippo. A tiny kangaroo sees him and hops, too, and soon they're hopp...more

It’s a wintery day at the zoo and all the animals are bored. What to do? Put on a show! A ZooZical! They practice their songs, dances, and acrobatics. They paint scenery and sew costumes. That night for the performance, despite the snow, crowds of people arrive at the zoo. The performance is a show-stopping success, the perfect ending to a snowy day.

Have you ever wondered what happens at the zoo when “frosty winds blow, when families stay at home, and when field trips are few”? In Zoozical by Judy Sierra, the answer is: midwinter doldrums!
To be more specific:
Little lemurs stopped leaping
Their yowling was keeping
The wombats awake
Then the snakes (by mistake)
Tied themselves up in knots
Ocelots lost their spots.
How does one get rid of the midwinter doldrums? For the animals at the zoo, all looked lost until a large hippo collapsed, a small hippo...more

"Zoozical" by Judy Sierra instantly became one of my new favorites after I read the fun story of the zoo animals who, in efforts to get people to come to the zoo during the cold winter, put on a musical, which they call a "zoozical." After practicing the songs with lyrics such as "if you're hoppy and you know it, clap your paws" and "for he's a jolly gorilla," the animals are ready to perform in front of an audience. However, hippo gets stage fright and the kangaroo falls asleep, and the fate of...more

Julia and I both really love rhyming books and when I flicked through this at the library I knew right away we'd like it. The story is pretty simple, it's basically about a group of zoo animals who get sad when the bad winter weather keeps the people away from the zoo. The animals are going through their boring days, not doing much of anything, when some of them started tapping and singing and twirling which got all of the other animals involved in turn.

A colorful, rhyming book that is lots of fun. The winter doldrums have hit the zoo.
"Owls did not give a hoot.
Pandas quit being cute."
And just when it seemed that things can't get worse, a little hippo and a little kangaroo start hopping, which encourags the other animals to dance, and the idea of a ZooZical is born! This sequel to Wild About Books continues with the same vivacious spirit of the first. It is winter and the visitors to the zoo start to stay home. All of the animals had the winter blues too. But just when the blues seemed to be inescapable, a very small hippo and young kangaroo started to hop. Soon everyone was dancing along with them and then everyone started to sing. The dancing and singing turned into their own stage show complete with sets and costumes. Once again, the zoo was the place to...more
This rhyming text describes how the winter doldrums are chased away by two clever zoo animals, the hippo and the kangaroo, who decide to put on a ZooZical. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and the other animals join them in planning the show. Some of the rhymes are a bit awkward, but with practice, they'll slip off the tongue with ease. Readers will enjoy finding the animal versions of song classics--"Oh my darling/Oh my darling/Oh my darling porcupine." The gouache illustrations of the animals'...more
Caldecott Winner
ZooZical by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Marc Brown is the book that I think should win the Caldecott Award for 2012. This book's illustrations were fantastic! Each picture was very colorful and used bright eye popping colors. The illustrator also used different pencil lines ( horizontal, vetical, and diagonol)that really gave the characters in the book texture. He also did a good job adding expressions to the animal faces, as if you could tell how they were feeling and what wa...more

It’s winter and it’s cold and the weather is miserable. Everyone is down in the doldrums. A group of animals at the zoo decide to put on a musical, adding new lyrics and dance numbers to old songs, to cheer everyone up. The musical, a “zoozical”, is a big hit.
‘Then onto the stage rolls ten seals on a bus,
Barking, “Let’s sing a tune that is all about us!”
The seals on the bus go round and round….’

This is a delightful rhyming tale about a bunch of animals at the zoo putting on a show during the winter doldrums. The illutrations are very colorful and entertaining and the narrative and snippets of songs are fun to read aloud. We really enjoyed reading this story together.
After reading other reviews here on Goodreads, I see that this book is a sequel to Wild About Books, with both books featuring the zoo animals. We've read both books and they are very humorous and great to read aloud.

The zoo is lonely for the winter months; there are no field trips anymore. The animals are plain bored. What can they possibly do? Well, they can put on a musical, and then people will want to come back, even if there is still snow on the ground! Featuring fun illustrations by Marc Brown and some twists on familiar kids songs, children will delight in the animals performances.
This is a cute rhyming book about animals at the zoo. It is the middle of winter and the animals are bored. The baby hippo and kangaroo start to sing and dance. Soon the other animals join in and they decide to put on a zoo musical--a zoozical. They all practice different songs and dances for the performance. The animals perform the zoozical for an audience and it is a success.

Cute, bright, rhymes, and ties in a lot of singalongs. Like its predecessor Wild About Books, this is a fun large-format readaloud for a classroom visit.

Wonderful Marc Brown illustrations of zoo animals and rollicking Judy Sierra rhyming lines tell the story of the small hippo and the baby kangaroo who cure the zoo's winter blues by enticing the animals to put on a musical circus show, which they present tho cheer up the town. Lots of opportunities for participation by young listeners.

In the middle of winter, nobody wants to visit the zoo, and that has made all of the animals unhappy. One day, some young animals decide to hold a musical (or ZooZical) to get people to visit the zoo again. After a lot of practice and creating props and sets, their plan works! The people from town enjoy watching the ZooZical.
What a fun picture book! The same animals that appeared in Wild About Books are feeling down during the cold winter months at the zoo. In an effort to pack the place with people the animals stage a musical. The rhyming is fun, the illustrations are terrific and my boys love the play on words using well known songs.
I'm a huge fan of Judy Sierra. While this book isn't one of my favorites and tries a bit too hard, there's still plenty of charm and humor to be found. Plus, I dare you to read this book and not have some of the (newly coined) songs stuck in your head! Would make for a fun storytime sing-a-long. :)

I'm not selfish. Sometimes I get books from the library for my son too. He loved this rhyming tale of zoo animals putting on a musical spectacular to beat the winter doldrums. He also liked that it made me break out in song at several points while reading it. "seals on the bus", anyone?
