OMG I need book 2 right now!!!!
The plot and world building was amazing. Where can you go wrong with DRAGONS who turn into hot men??? And the dragon Council with the Court and all made for a very interesting backdrop. Although I am still a little confused, are wild dragons wild people? Or dragons who never turn into people?
Marina for me wavered between really brave to really annoying. She seemed to throw a lot of temper tantrums and be a complete flirt which bothered me a bit. She was supposed t...more

Penelope Fletcher's Smolder is an entertaining read if you are willing to suspend any expectation of realistic behaviour (and I don't just mean because it is fantasy). Marina and Koen are another stunning example of insta-love, granted it's also a case of instant hate too. The whole scenario is made more ridiculous by the fact that she is COMPLETELY unfazed by the fact that he is a dragon. This is where my sense of realism is stretched beyond it's brink. Marina isn't afraid of anything. (view sp...more
”Oi! Penelope!” I have a headache from the tons of spelling, grammatical, ”and writing and writing” errors <=== done on purpose, its done in this book several times. I can usually ignore small typos but the errors in this book were distracting! I had to re-read passages and sometimes it took a moment to figure out she meant ”past” and not really ”passed”. I got the book for free so I know I must sound ungrateful, but it's frustrating! What a shame too because I really got into Marina's story....more
FANTASTIC!!! Best book yet. I've read all of Penelope's novels so far. And I am blown away, to a point fanatical.... inspired. She is an incredible writer. Please look past the grammatical errors. We can not all be perfect. I loved the Rae novels but as a writer, she has progressed in Smolder; this is by far her best novel yet. I love the characters. I laughed out loud, (to the point my husband thinks I am legally insane and pretty sure he wants to confinscate my Nook), cried and want to kill so...more
This book made me realize how much I miss dragons. I definitely need to read more books about dragons.
I really haven't seen too many review floating around for this one, so I didn't really have any expectations set. But I loved it. I loved the story and I really liked Koen and Marina's relationship. It was literally the definition a love/hate relationship.
I like when characters have 'mates' because it makes the destined-to-be-together books work for me. It depends on the book because sometimes...more

4.5 stars.
What a fantastic cast of characters -- this is a great new series by Penelope Fletcher. I loved the Demon Girl series and I can see the growth in Ms. Fletcher as a writer as I like this dragon series even more. Ms. Fletcher is deconstructing a fairy tale here and it is riveting. The dragons in this book live in a brutal world which is on the cusp of evolving. Of course our heroine Marina is just the shove it needs. I am not a fan of plot summaries in lieu of an actual opinion of a book...more

Okay....finished this one in a few short hours! Let me start off by saying I am a huge Penelope fan. Love her writing and her Rae Wilder Series. Since this one is not considered YA I was super excited to read it. Anyways on with the review.....

Ha! I like the blurb!
Wounded, a dragon drops from the sky to crash in front of Marina in an explosion of fire. She does the only reasonable thing a woman can do – she saves his life.
The reasonable thing to do is save its life!? It's a friggin' dragon! What if it eats you!? And it dropped in an explosion of fire! So it's on fire, it's a dragon, and the chick approaches it!?
Oh well. Maybe that's just me. But it sounds intriguing, so I will give it a go.

3.5/5; 4 stars; B+
This was a pretty good dragon shape shifter fantasy. Some of the plot development seemed too slow but the world building was interesting enough to make up for it. My only complaint is it ended rather abruptly at, what I thought, was an inconvenient place in the story. The next book was supposed to be out a few months ago so hopefully it will be available soon. I an definitely interested in seeing how things go with Marina and Koen and the Aver!

Good plot and character development. Definitely some new twists for dragons who can shapeshift to humans. If you don't like books that leave you hanging for the sequel, that have a nonending, this book is not for you. Normally, I find that irritating, but the story and characters are so engaging that I didn't mind. My only complaint is that the proofreader of the book needs a new occon because proofreading ain't their thing
This book Should have been a stand a lone. Instead it ends in a gliffhanger. The beginning was good, promising and I read it eagerly.
Then she went to the other world and turned out weeping little girl. She couldn't do anything. I hoped she world pull out a gun or something, but no. The promising feel fell flat soon.
I wouldn't recommend this one. It was readable but not a keeper.

Ugh. Where do I start? Alright so many people really enjoy this story. But honestly, I just could not get into it. I love stories with dragon men thingies in them, cause that's the shit right there. So I saw this book and heard there were hot dragon men thingies too, so I got a sample from the kindle. I. Was. So. Fucking. Bored. Which doesn't make much sense because a lot of things happened in the beginning. I think it was just the way it was written that made me want to curl up and die in my sl...more
It started off very shaky, with Marina being extremely unlikable and the plot being weak. There were many, many spelling and grammatical errors, and plot problems large enough for a truck to drive through... sideways. But the story itself was interesting enough to keep my attention. Oddly enough, I remarked on how this one was much better than the last self-published book I last read... Only to learn that the last one was written by the same author, so there's an improvement there at least!

So much potential for this one. Dragons are so much better than puny werewolves and shapeshifters.
I really hope the sequel will be as entertaining.
I dont mind a typo or two, but in this case, I had to re-read a sentence to be able to comprehend. I just hated that. I would have given this more stars.

Enjoyed it. Hated the ending. It says the next book is out winter 2012. It is almost summer 2013 and no sequel:(
