A great book to open discussion on the very important topics of responsibility toward animals and animal rescue. It does end happily, and "Maggie" - whom I had the pleasure of meeting - now lives a wonderful life. This book has the potential to be a tear-jerker for any animal lover, though, and if you have a tender-hearted child, you might want to pre-read it so you'll know what's coming and have the option of editing your reading slightly if that seems appropriate. The illustrations are beautif...more
This story will both break and warm your heart, as Maggie is left behind then taken to a shelter. The illustrations of the people are mediocre, but Maggie's expressions are expressive, especially for a dog. Overall, a fantastic introduction to animal treatment and shelters.
One line really bothered me. Jeff asks his teacher what will happen if Maggie doesn't find a home, which the author write "When she told him, he asked, 'Why does this dog have to die....'" So it does tell you what happens, wi...more

Based on a true story of a few students who worked with their community to build a no-kill animal rescue. Jeff, a fourth grader, read in the news paper about Maggie, a dog who was left alone when her family moved without her. He asked his teacher what would happen to Maggie if no one adopted her. Heart broken to learn about Maggie's fate and the fate of so many other animals Jeff and his classmates work with their community to start a no-kill shelter. Giving these furry friends a second chance a...more
My Review: If you are an animal lover then you would love to read all about Maggie’s Second Chance a gentle dog’s rescue. This is a true story about the important of responsibility shown by fourth grade students who read about how Maggie was going to be euthanized. The children were determined to go to the city council and convinced the members to set up a shelter that would house animals that would not be killed but can stay in the shelter till they are adopted.

ok, I admit I'm a sap and a sucker for animals. This beautiful story made me cry. Maggie is a sweet dog, pregnant and abandoned by her owners. She's taken to a shelter to have her puppies. THe puppies all get new homes, but Maggie is left to languish until a little boy sees a news story about her and begs his teacher to help him help her. His class petitions the city council and gets a no-kill shelter created- just in time to save Maggie who is about to be euthanized.
