I bought this book because part of my current research involves looking at British travel guides from the 1910s. I don't know if it will help that but what I did get was a really excellent personal reflection on Baedekers and other guide books from the 19th century. At some point I realized this wasn't so relevant to my research but I kept reading because Mr Keates writes with such a clear and elegant style that he makes his subject fascinating.

Why should we care about old guide books? Mr Keates
