Executive summary: a rather charming and fun book.

This novel would never have come to my attention if it hadn't been featured on the blog of lousy book covers. I'm serious: that's where I ran into it. (OK, to me, the cover isn't great, but it's not the worst I've ever seen by any means.) Now that's out of the way... I liked the book, and particularly the protagonist, who is also the narrator.

This is a book that makes me want to discuss the difference between author and protagonist in first-perso

I am very impressed with this series, and I already wish there were more than two books out. Gretchen Gallen leaves the city and the memories of a terrible night behind. Seeking time to recover from "the incident", she settles in as the general helper for a wealthy woman who does not drive. The discovery of the woman's body from an accidental death leads Gretchen, pushed by her employers daughter, to develop a business cleaning up after death to offer a small bit of peace to the families. With ...more

This is apparently a new author. Reminds me of Janet Evanovich in humor and female sleuth motif but this is both darker and funny. The main character is flawed, complex and a survivor which is a nice change from most mysteries. I like the psychological aspects whic kept the book from feeling like a formula. The only issue I had with it was the slightly slow srart. Really glad I kept with it. I would have given it a 4 for the slow start but fell completely in love with the characters. I almost ...more

Gretchen Gallen has just been let go from her high-powered financial job in the big city. Now she works in rural North Carolina as the companion to a nice older lady and living in a cabin she earns as part of her wages. When the lady dies, Gretchen gets to know the lady's daughters, becoming friends with one, and helps to go through the lady's personal effects. What the gals discover leads them to some disturbing observations: was she, just possibly, murdered? When the cops get involved, ...more

How does one get into the job of cleaning up homes after the dead are removed? Intrigued from the get-go with Bridget Allison's "Maid for Mayhem." Then I find out the main character also volunteers with animal rescue. Did she really just chase the dog she's watching out the door in her underwear? Oh yes. (Cue the Cute Stranger).

Ms. Allison's book has the feel of Evanovich without the bad language. Recommended to readers who enjoy the Stephanie Plum character.

This was an OK read, the story line was fairly interesting but couldn't keep my attention. I made it about half way through and ended up skimming the rest of the book. I doubt I will continue with this series.
