Wow, what a fantastic book, "It's Not About You". I literally could not stop reading this book. As you can see, I read it in one day. This book is so intriguing and I sure would love to have my own business and apply the principles taught in this book.

The authors, Bob Burg and John David Mann, developed Ben's Keys to Legendary Leadership. I believe that Ben's wife, Melanie, in the story was referring to the car keys "but" it was the Keys of Ben's Manifesto.

Key #2 Build You...more

I picked this up because I needed something that was light, easy to read, but made it look like I was doing something work related. What a spectacular find!

This took many of the things I learned from "In Search of Excellence" many years ago and made it a very simple direct read. These are not new concepts. They are the same one I used so that my business broke even the first year, which was an almost unheard of accomplishment. However, it may have been helpful at that time to have them so easily...more

America has been on the brink of narcissistic collapse for far too long. Look around at our banking system, the way our corporations focus on profit margins, even our mass industrialization of food, insurance-controlled medical care and pharmaceutical proliferation. All this in the name of progress, yet ask most Americans and they will tell you that working for a company doesn't make them feel special or particularly valued. Anyone who owns a business or is thinking of starting one should read...more

I read this in one sitting. It was delightful. I thought it was a nonfiction, but it is a fiction teaching a nonfiction strategy.

Ben works in mergers and aquisitions at a large company. He is assigned to persuade 500 employees (or at least a majority of them) working for a small hometown furniture maker to vote for the proposed merger. He thinks it will be a piece of cake, but it turns out it is anything but. The company doesn't want to merge and Ben begins to learn that there are various ways o...more

Once again another great book from the combined efforts of Bob Burg and John David Mann. It's Not About You: A Little Story About What Matters Most in Business brings you back to the lessons learned from Pindar and offers some more great buisness advice that anyone can take away and feel they can better themselves. Such an easy quick read that you will not put this down and have it finished within the day.

I don't really know why I picked this up. It was on the New Arrivals shelf at the library, and was short, so I figured what the hell. I guess I figured it might give me some things to think about that might be applicable in my job, since I deal with people a great deal.

Basically, this book is a mini-treatise on how to win friends and influence people, packaged as a short fiction. Some of the advice and anecdotes in the book seemed a little cliche/obvious, but some of it did give me a new perspec...more

I got this book as a Goodreads Giveaway - I didn't have a lot of expectations, not having ever read a business book, but I found it hard to put down, and a quick/easy read. It's not in a style I would have expected, either. It's more (as it says) a parable. The story is believable and enjoyable. I was genuinely curious as to whether he would be able to win over Allen & Augustine, and curious as to who Aunt Elle was.

The lessons are obvious, and easy to apply not only to your work-life... but...more

What a wonderful surprise this was. The business part of the title almost made me shy away from it until I read the intro. It is not only well written by authors who truly did their homework but it's written in such a way that non-business types like myself can sink into the corporate chair and glimpse what it takes to make a business work. I think this should be required reading for most employers I've worked for. This is a feel good book because, like the cover states,it's 'A Little Story Abou...more

An excellent follow up to "The Go Giver" and a book that should be on the "To Read" list of nearly anyone working in any sort of business (and in particular, leaders and managers).

Told in the familiar parable format made popular by "The One Minute Manager", "Who Moved My Cheese" and other business books, this book outlines five keys to leadership focused on the idea made explicit by the book's title "it's not about you."

I want to go back and re-read "The Go Giver" again, and then re-read this im...more

I won this book in a Goodreads contest. I enjoyed the story format, versus a typical non-fiction, bullet-list layout. The message was clear, and the characters were believable and fun. I also think the moral of this story can apply to far more than just business. I would recommend this one to high school and/or college graduates, and professionals in any industry.

It's a quick, easy read with a powerful message. I'll be referring to the Keys in the back of the book in the future.

Received this book as a GoodReads Giveaway. I enjoyed the approach the authors took in teaching the leadership values, i.e. rather than merely stating key leadership techniques the reader takes a journey with the protagonist and grows and develops leadership skills along with him. The "reveal" at the end makes reading through to the end worthwhile.

A light, airy read that teaches you core business fundamentals along the way. Would highly recommend.

This is a quick read with information that is essential in both business and in private life. It's a sweet story created to present the importance of putting others' welfare first and making decisions based on trust, integrity, and solid, researched information. I enjoyed it. The story was adorable, and the similarities in running a business or a household are evident and presented nicely.

“It’s Not About You” is just that. Not about you, which is something many business professionals forget. This is a great book for anyone who works in business or is an aspiring business major. Lays the land of how to be a great leader and Ben’s “manifesto” provides some great insight as to how to succeed in business.

I was pleasantly really surprised by this book! The story was lovely and the the lesson behind it was not overwhelming, but just right. I easily read it in one short sitting, but that isn't to say there is nothing to learn from it. This is a really great read that does as the title says....it really isn't about you!

**I won this book in a First-Reads Giveaway. My review is a reflection of my honest opinion and is not influenced by the fact that I got the book for free.

Such a fantastic book. I first read the go giver which I was immediately a fan of the authors, now after reading " It's not about you", I'm a raving fan. This book is certainly a must read for all people feeling a Leadership calling in their life. I read a lot of Business Leadership books & really enjoy the Fictional approach they took.

A quick read, only a 107 pages but packed with many lessons. The concept that it isn't about you, it's what you can give to the customer, your employees, and the public that truly matters. It's the concept of customer service and quality that's missing in many of today's businesses.

I won an ARC copy of this book on Goodreads. It's a story, with a lesson behind it. Ben is a young manager who has just been promoted to the Mergers and Acquisitions department of a large company. It is his job to convince 500 people that the merger is a good idea. Going into the merger he has a idea of how to get the job done, but after meeting an eccentric old lady he learns valuable lessons in being a good leader.

Good story line. Quick read. Good for anyone in a leadership position.

This is a fantastic little short story about what matters most in business. Not surprisingly, the topics in this book are applicable to everyday life, not just in a business setting. The is a super-easy read, and you will very much enjoy the characters in this book.

I won this book through the Goodreads giveaways. It will prove immensely valuable and become well worn.

What a brilliant book! It is a very short easy read for busy business executives.

I want everyone in my oganization to read it. It simply and clearly sets forth the easy steps necessary to create a successful responsible business.

It points out all the important things large businesses appear to have forgotten in their success. I would love to see every executive read this book ans start applyi...more

One of those books that uses fictional characters as mouthpieces for wisdom on relating to and working with people. A little too simplistic for me to see how to apply the principles.

I graciously won this book through goodreads giveaway.

This book is short and straight to the point which I like. It tells the story of how to be a leader without realizing you are learning. The main character in the book is easy to relate with and I was able to enjoyably breeze through this book in no time.

My only concern is that I still don't really have a grasp on exactly what the authors are trying to say makes a good leader. Maybe writing another book and giving a new example with the same p...more

A quick-reading parable about who and what matters most in business. Everything you ever learned in kindergarten, revised.
Matt
There is nothing really insightful or substantive here. Aunty Zen provides some banal business advice in a coffee shop, while Ben tries to close an M&A deal. Don't waste your money.

Great book for business owners and beyond. Some of the principals can be applied to every day life.

An interesting read. Well worth the time. I will search out more books by these two writers.

“The single biggest challenge to any organization is the constant cloud of fear and doubt that swirls around the heads of the people involved. As a leader, your job is to hold fast to the big picture, to keep seeing in your mind’s eye, with crystal clarity, where it is you’re going—that place that right at this moment exists only in your mind’s eye. And to keep seeing that, even when nobody else does.

Especially when nobody else does.

Your people count on you to do this. It’s the biggest job you have.”
