I expected more from this book because I enjoyed I Don't Know How She Does It. Unfortunately, "I think I love You" was so bad that I only got to about page 100. At that point, I made the decision that there were too many good books out there to waste my time on this one.

I listened to this on audio CD, which provided the wonderful Welsh and British accents that really enriched the story.
The first half of the book describes the extreme crushes on then-teen-idol-David-Cassidy held by a 1970s Welsh teenage girl, Petra, and her friends. Hello World, there's a book that I'm reading/ Come on it's Crappy!

Ugh- it started out well enough- very evocative of adolescence with an interesting Welsh setting. Though sometimes the dialog felt forced, as though some characters were just setting for a "spike." I grew up watching The Partidge Family and alot of my friends were gaga over David Cassidy. I wasn't, but my sister was. So opens up I Think I Love You by Allison Pearson. Petra is your average thirteen year old girl with a crush on star David Cassidy. Her mom, a cold woman, doesn't understand, but Petra's friends do. They find him groovy too.

Bill is a college grad who gets the unlikely job of ghost-writing responses of David's fan letters. They get published in the magazine, The Essential David Cassidy Magazine. Petra falls in love with David after reading the magazine. There's a contest where the winner gets to meet David, and Petra and her friend immediately enter, hoping beyond hope that they win.

Enter the second half of the book, where Petra is an adult woman still trying to find her path in life. Her husband has left her for a younger woman, and her own daughter has her own celebrity crush. But when she is looking for her mom's things, she finds letter - a letter that her mom had hidden of Petra winning that David Cassidy contest. Obviously, the contest is years over, but makes a phone call anyway. This begins the journey of her meeting Bill. Bill, who answered the fan letters with his own ideas instead of facts, may be a huge disappointment to Petra,who thought herself in love with David. Did she fall in love with the idea of David or did she fall in love with Bill? Petra will do her own soul-searching and self-discovery before she can move forward into her future.

I Think I Love You is a coming of age novel and a mid-life crisis novel all in one. The characters are very believable, warm, humorous and complex. Pearson has well-researched her novel, and the interview with David Cassidy at the back of the novel pays tribute to that. You're in for a delectable treat with I Think I Love You! A very satisfying read.(less)

This is totally a feel-good novel and I could hardly put it down. In 1973-74 two young girls in Wales, Petra and Sharon, are part of a group of girls completely obsessed with David Cassidy. It’s kind of the fase I’ve been in since I was little, and I refuse to grow out of it. The thing is my idols are not-that-famous-yet-just-famous-enough-to-know-about-them rockstars. And I happen to fall for their music and story, not immediately their looks.

Anyway, the book was different than I expected. The start was slow. Too many details about too many characters. Yet, that was exactly what kept me reading for the first 100 pages.
The point of view changed quick and unnoticed, so I often read little bits with the wrong voice in my head.

I you exect, like I did, that most of the book is about the older grown-up point of view, looking back on their younger selves, you are horribly wrong.

Most of the book is told from the young characters. The last bit is told from the grown-up characters, thinking back to the story you just read. Aslo, the further down the book, the more predictable it gets.

And there was something else that really REALLY bothered me about the story.
Petra, the main female character, tells you about the concerts. Apparently, the crowd was pushing forward so bad that people fainted, broke ribs and other bones and one girl even was pushed to dead.
So Petra, who lost one of her mates, crawled through the crowd on her hands and knees to find her friend, who had a broken rib.

I wouldn’t even try to get to my hands and knees at a concert. That is simply impossible, especially when you are standing at the barrier.
I suspect that either the writer has never been to a concert, or she has a weird and wild fantasy about it. I just hope for her sake she isn’t going to try and crawl through a concert crowd to find her friends. That could end in her own dead...

I like the plot. But I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I wanted to. It was too long, with too many unnessasery details and a very predictable ending. (less)

What I liked most about this book was Pearson's strong writing style that easily evoked a lot of emotions and memories within my own self. My own obsessions with musical stars when I was 13-15, the "safety" of loving them because they can never love you back, and so on. I found I Think I Love You to be rather refreshing, in the sense that it also gave my memory a good refresh. I'd forgotten how I used to be at 12, 13, 14, when I thought I was madly in love with pop stars. (For God's sake, I swore I'd marry Michael Jackson when I was 3! I call myself tenacious! It took me a little while to get in to this story. I abandoned it earlier this summer when I couldn't connect with the mindset of the pre-teen Petra who narrates the first 1/3 of the book. After listening to a repeat of interview with Allison Pearson on Fresh Air a few weeks ago I picked it up again and stuck with it. I'm so glad I did, there is some really beautiful prose in this story. While the plot seeks to examine the phase of teenage obsession that so many girls go through, I found Pearson...more It took me a little while to get in to this story. I abandoned it earlier this summer when I couldn't connect with the mindset of the pre-teen Petra who narrates the first 1/3 of the book. After listening to a repeat of interview with Allison Pearson on Fresh Air a few weeks ago I picked it up again and stuck with it. I'm so glad I did, there is some really beautiful prose in this story. While the plot seeks to examine the phase of teenage obsession that so many girls go through, I found Pearson to be at her best when dealing with the complex territory of mother-loss and female group dynamics in the last 2/3 of the book that focuses on the adult Petra. A few favorite passages:

Page 172: "Surely you should be able to call come kind of emergency service and say, "Look, I'm terribly sorry, but I am unable to process these two appalling blows simultaneously. Can I arrange to have one of them taken away?"

Page 182: "It's not always easy to recognize the significant moments in your life as you're living them, but Petra understands this is one of them. To stand in the hall and to realize that neither of her parents will ever answer the phone again. Nor will she need to ever dial their number. Death itself is too big to take in, she already sees that; the loss comes at you in an infinite number of small installments that can never be paid off."

Page 202: "Extreme thinness has become yet another way to compete with one another. Trust girls to get into a contest to make themselves disappear."

Page 210: "Colluding with what other people thought about you felt easier than explaining who you really were."

Page 210: "Getting the emotionally unavailable public schoolboy to become available to her, the girl from Gower, that was what gave her the special jazzed-up feeling, the feeling she craved...where was the thrill in conquering those who wanted you?"

Page 289: "All of the Cassidy girls have entered the age of grief, that time when life's losses start to stack up. Few will have been spared. Count yourself lucky if you get to your mid-thirties without knowing death, divorce, or other species of grief."

Overall a great novel that reads almost like a self-help book. Likely to be most interesting to women who remember or can reconnect with their early teen years or for those parenting girls in this phase of life.

The first half of the book is set in 1974. Reading about 13-year-old Petra reminds me of my own teen crush. I can also relate to Petra, even though there are many years between us. I think Pearson has captured the emotions and thoughts of a 13-year-old girl very well. Reading about the 1974 thoughts and days of Bill is very funny. It was funny to read what he thought of Cassidy, ghostwriting as David Cassidy, and the letters that fans wrote him, thinking he was Cassidy.

This novel is set in two different era's and written from the points of view of two different characters.

The first half takes place in the '70's, and the second half takes place in the late '90's. It's about their personal lives, as well as how their lives were touched by David Cassidy.

The phenomenon of teen girl obsession with a celebrity is almost as much of a mystery to me as it is to any man. So, I had no idea that I’d actually find myself relating to the 13 year old Petra.

OK, I'm a sucker (so far base upon a grand total of two) for Allison Pearson books. I simply enjoyed this read the whole way through.

Having succumbed heavily to fangirldom myself, I appreciated Pearson's ability to evoke that specific and short-lived period in a girl's life. She also throws in a good deal of teenaged girl dynamics <<>>

Petra and her best friend Sharon are thirteen years old in 1974, and David Cassidy mania is in full bloom. They live in Wales, and when they find out that he will be playing a concert near them, they buy tickets for the show. Of course, Petra will have to lie to her very strict mother about where she is going.

Pearson does a terrific job taking the reader right back to her teen years, wanting desperately to belong in the popular girls' crowd, being insecure about her looks, whether she has the right clothes, will a boy ever want to date her? All those feelings come rushing right back.

Petra has to deal with Queen Bee Gillian, whom every girl will recognize right away, with her manipulative ways and hurtful, cutting comments. Gillian does her best to cause problems between Petra and the sunny Sharon. And when a boy whom Gillian likes likes Petra, the claws really come out.

While that story is familiar, it is the David Cassidy angle that makes this story unique. Petra and Sharon know EVERYTHING about David, and when a David Cassidy fan magazine offers a trip to California to meet him on The Partridge Family TV show set, they team up to win the trivia contest.

The novel also follows Bill, who wants to be a rock magazine journalist, but ends up writing for the David Cassidy fan magazine, in the voice of David himself. A pivotal section of the story occurs at the concert, which Bill has to cover. The crowds push forward, and several girls are injured; one girl is killed. (That incident really occurred at the concert- I remember reading about it when it happened.)

Fast forward twenty-fours years later: Petra has to deal with her mother's death, and her husband leaving her for a younger woman. Her husband even has the nerve to bring Petra his dirty sheets to wash- he doesn't have a washing machine on his houseboat- and she does them! Oh, Petra.

Going through her mother's things, she finds out that she and Sharon won the David Cassidy fan contest 24 years ago; her mother hid the letter from her. Petra calls the magazine office, and all the stars align, because the magazine's boss thinks it would make a terrific human interest story to take them to Las Vegas to meet David Cassidy.

Readers will no doubt relate to Petra, with all of her insecurities. And reading this novel made me want to dig out my old Partridge Family albums (yes, I had them all) and The Partridge Family Season One DVD (yes, I bought it). Pearson has a transcript of the fascinating interview she did with Cassidy for The Daily Telegraph in 2004 in the back of the book, which inspired the novel. Now all I have to do is find Cassidy's 2007 memoir, Could It Be Forever? My Story. Cause that has got to be one juicy read.

This book will appeal to all the women who loved David Cassidy as a young girl, or any woman who fondly remembers her tween celebrity crush. And just try to get that song out your head.

Not what i thought this book would be at all. The cover and title gives the lovey dovey impression. But there is not one sloppy bit in the whole book. It is actually a love story about teenagers and their fascination of pop stars and how deep the love went back in the day.

They say, "write what you know." Personally, while I see why that's a good first step, I have cautioned my students against writing what they know too well - as you are likely to make your reader feel like a third wheel while you're on a date with yourself.

Allow me to preface my review with the caveat that I have/had no idea who David Cassidy is/was and in fact spen...more They say, "write what you know." The title certainly didn't tip me off; I didn't even know that was the name of a song. I also never suffered from teen idolatry; in fact I think that kind of went the way of lava lamps and avocado colored kitchens. Therefore perhaps a lot of what made this book relatable to people didn't work for me as a product of my own generation (and more on that later) but I think the book was bad, regardless, either way. I also want to say (and I will get to the review soon, I promise) that I did some research (ala wikipedia) on this Cassidy dude and girls, what is the deal?? He looks like a girl! And after hitting up Rhapsody for some of his tunes I gotta say, I get it even LESS.
So anyway, this all might contribute to why this book left me cold. ITILY centers around two parallel stories - that of Petra, young pubescent who is madly in love with Cassidy during his reign in the 70s (thank you, Wikipedia, for enlightening me as to why the concert featured in the novel would be so important - a girl actually died from a stampeded of hormone crazed teens) wants nothing more than to run off with him, and then there is the story of Bill, an older man whose first post BA job in "journalism" is posing as David to write letters to the fevered girls who read these letters like their Bible.
Obviously, the two will meet, at some point, and obviously, the real David versus the David of the pages will prove some sort of conflict that has some kind of cosmic and ontological significance.
The thing of it is is that Pearson very obviously drew from her own experiences as a screaming, weeping teen to write this novel and I kept feeling like this novel was a love letter to her former self - it was too real to be imaginative, too personal to be accessible. And while some might say it is accessible to those who were shrieking at Cassidy, I then ask, does writing only achieve its purpose to an intended audience or is writing meant to transcend our own experiences and be accessible to if not all, then most? When I reviewed that Marly and Me book, rather scathingly, I was told off by a number of people who said, if you hate dogs, then why bother reading/expecting to like a book about dogs? Maybe. But couldn't I expect a book to be so well done that the content and my relationship therein is somewhat irrelevant?
Aside from that, the book (while having the occasional funny line, though paling in comparison to the much funnier I Don;t Know How She Does It, and startling insight as to the ins and outs of teen cliques and how we would even sell out our best friend to earn a smile from the queen bee) followed every far fetched, cliched romantic comedy chick lit formulaic yuckiness and spun way out of the orbit of reality.
Readable? Yes. Good? No.(less)

I give this 3.5 stars, though I don't really understand my own rating system and freely confess to being inconsistent.
